VERMONT IS NUMBER 12, ACCORDING TO ALEC The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) released its "Report Card on American Education: A State-by-State Analysis" last week, and Vermont ranked 12th in academic achievement among all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The top-scoring state was Wisconsin, followed by Washington and Minnesota. New England states in the top ten were New Hampshire at Number 7 and Massachusetts at Number 8. The academic achievement rankings were based on National Assessment of Educational Progress and SAT scores. The Report looks at a number of factors, however, including per pupil spending, teacher compensation, academic achievement, and percentage increase in funding.
