The indigenous population of Vanuatu is predominantly Melanesian, on some islands blended with Polynesian. The people of the archipelago are known as "Ni-Vanuatu." Small numbers of people of European (French, Australian, New Zealander) and Asian (Vietnamese, Chinese) extraction also reside in the islands.
Most people are Christians, predominantly belonging to Protestant denominations including Anglican, Presbyterian and Seventh-day Adventist. However, many professed Christians also continue some degree of indigenous religious practices, and some "Ni-Vanuatu" adhere solely to their traditional animist faiths.
Cool between April and November, the days become hot and dry in December. The daily temperature will range from 20 to 32 degrees Celsius. Trade winds occur from May to October. Vanuatu is warm, humid and wet between November and April. Rain is moderate.
According to June 2000 World Health Organization figures, the population of Vanuatu has a life expectancy at birth of 52.8 years (51.31 for males, and 64.4 for females). Vanuatu has an infant mortality rate of 59.58 deaths/1,000 live births. In terms of literacy, 48 percent of the female population and 57 percent of the male population, age 15 and over, can read and write.
Economy and Government
In 1906, after years of strife in colonizing Vanuatu, a unique compromise agreement developed between France and the United Kingdom that would allow them to administer the islands jointly. Called the British-French Condominium, it provided two completely separate governmental systems, one for English-speaking settlers and one for French, that came together only in a joint court. Melanesians were barred from acquiring the citizenship of either power. In effect, the dual governmental system divided the Ni-Vanuatu people and until this day there are still remnants of this dual system (i.e. dual educational system: French and English) even though the country is now independent and administered under its on democratic system.

Pacific News Member of Vanuatu Culture The ni-Vanuatu pride themselves on their musical instruments, of which the tamtam - also called the slit-drum or slit-gong - is a fine example. Traditionally used in ceremonies, it is an intricately carved log with a slice hollowed out from the centre from which the sound reverberates. Panpipes are also common in music, as are conch shells, which double as bush telephones. On Santo they play a three-holed flute, while on Ambrym a long, carved musical pipe is played. Ambrym is also home to the most elaborate sand drawings in Vanuatu, which villagers employ to illustrate legends, songs, ceremonies or to leave messages. Stone, wood and even treefern carving has developed into an intricate art form owing to the abundance of available materials, and in the north the sculptors sometimes use coral to carve small statues. Magic stones carved from pumice are part of Vanuatu's hidden life and are generally not on display. Tattooing was once a high art form but is becoming rarer, although body and rock painting are still widely practiced. Vanuatu's fractured terrain has produced a kaleidoscope of cultures and more than 100 indigenous languages. Isolated from each other by sea or impassable mountains, disparate groups of islanders had hundreds or thousands of years to jealously guard their own cultures and languages or to throw them in the mix with their neighbours. The indigenous population is an assemblage of Melanesian - the black people of the Western Pacific with links to Papuans and Australian Aborigines - Polynesian, the lighter skinned people of the eastern Pacific, and varying degrees in between. The progress from colonialism to independence in the Pacific Islands region (both north and south of the equator) has not brought an end to the influence of the former colonial powers. Presently, there are ten territories or dependencies linked directly to an extraregional government, and five others are constrained in their foreign policies by the terms of their free associaton compacts. Like these territories, the independent states are also affected by the political, security and economic policies of the extraregional powers. There continues to be an overlap of interests between outsiders and islanders, which is likely to persist even as more island stated begin to exert their influence more and more within the region as well as globally. During the 19th century the islands making up Vanuatu, were settled by British and French missionaries, planters and traders. The UK and France eventually agreed on a condominium over the two islands. After the Second World War, a complex power struggle began between the islanders and the interests over the future political and economic course of the islands. The constitutional position was settled in 1977 at a conference in Paris between British, French and New Hebridean representatives at which it was agreed that the islands should become fully independent within three years.

Nasonal Komuniti Development Trust (NKDT)
Background:
Vanuatu is one of the most culturally diverse nations of the world. In the many islands which make up the nation of Vanuatu, 110 different languages are spoken and there are as many unique cultures. Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, is unlike the rest of the country. It is a sophisticated tourist destination; a tax haven with up-market resorts, golf courses and international cuisine. This is the image of 'Pacific Paradise', the stopover in pre-packaged Pacific tours. But 82% of the country's population of 160,000 people live as subsistence farmers in rural areas, dependant on land and sea resources for their social, economic and cultural well-being. Traditional beliefs and customs are strong outside the towns. There is little need for cash, as the majority of local people draw from the land and sea their resources, food, water, forest products - the basis of village life and culture. Population pressures, urbanisation and the increasing need and desire for cash are causing widespread change to traditional community life and land use. For 73 years the islands were ruled jointly by the British and the French in one of the most bizarre arrangements in colonial history. Neither colonial power had exclusive sovereignty, so their were two currencies, two post offices with two sets of stamps, and two sets of schools.

Daily life for the ni-Vanuatu is ruled by 'kastom' or custom, sometimes associated with magic. Much of the tradition is secret, and passed down through the generations through the initiated men.
Traditional life is an ongoing cycle of ritual, with every stage of an individual's life celebrated, from birth, initiation, marriage and death.
Male initiation is very important and every man goes through several grades of initiation to reach true manhood, with tests and celebrations at each stage. Songs and dances are integral to this cycle of life celebration and are performed according to ancestral rules and traditions. Celebrations feature elaborate costumes, large masks, tree carvings and even stone carvings. Some areas have special dance grounds, with special places for preparation of animals for the feasting.
In traditional ways, pigs are a measure of wealth and their curved tusks are highly prized and used in celebrations and as recompense for breaking tribal custom and laws. Artwork is for both practical and traditional use. Women weave baskets of different sizes and shapes and mats for everyday living, but also weave special, finely woven mats for weddings and other functions. The mats are distinctive in the Pacific because they are long, narrow and dyed different colours. Men's sculpture includes making the ceremonial masks and carving the tree fern, wood and stone figures associated with initiation. These vary from island to island, and even within the larger islands.
