Martin van buren: the eighth u.s. president
Martin Van Buren was born in Kinderhook, N.Y. on December 5, 1782. He was the first president not born a British subject. He became president in 1837 and served until 1841. The Democratic party obeyed Jackson's orders and nominated Vice President Martin Van Buren as it's presidential candidate in 1836. Van Buren's opposition came from the whig party, formed by Jackson's political enemies in 1834. bodyOffer(4528) Just two months after Martin Van Buren took office, the United States was hit by one of the worst depressions in the nation's history. The economic crisis that began during the summer of 1837 lasted nearly a decade. These hard times dominated Van Buren's presidency and eventually cost him re-election in 1840. Although Van Buren received much of the blame, the crisis was largely the fault of Andrew Jackson. The panic of 1837 began when a number of banks in New York stopped converting paper money into gold and silver. Loans also became harder to get. As a result, speculators who were denied credit, stopped buying land, and land prices sharply fell. Nearly one thousand banks around the country failed. When they did, work on the internal improvement projects, the banks had been financing also stopped, which put many people out of work.

My report is on Martin Van Buren. He was born on December 5, 1782. He was born in Kinderhook, New York. Also, Martin Van Buren was the first Chief Executive born under the US flag.
Martin Van Buren had a nickname, it was (Little Magician). Some people liked to call him by his nickname, but most people called him by his real name.
Martin Van Buren's religious denomination was Dutch Reformed. His ancestry was also Dutch. Martin didn't mind that he was Dutch and not very many people he knew were American
Martin got married on February 21,1807. He got married at Catskill, N. Y. Martin Van Buren was 24 years old when he got married. If you want the exact day of his age, he would be 24 years and 78 days old. He was married for 11 years and 349 days.
Martin Van Buren was a Democratic (Republican). He represented New York as a Democratic Republican.
Now we finally get to the good part of when he becomes President. Martin Van Buren became President on March 4, 1837- March 1841. Martin Van Buren was competing against Richard Mentor Johnson for President. When it came to the votes Martin got 57.82 percent (170 votes - 15 states). Richard got 42.18 percent (109 votes - 15 states). Martin was surprised to win more of the votes from Richard Mentor Johnson.

MARTIN VAN BUREN
ALS: "M. Van Buren" as Jackson's Vice President , 1½p, 4½x7½, front and verso, separate sheets. No place, 1833 March 26. To Major William T. Barry, Jackson's Postmaster General. In full: "This will be handed to you by Mr Washington of Virginia who has been very earnestly recommended to me by our friends there. He desires a clerkship for which Judge Parker and Mr. Nicholas think him well qualified. If you can do any thing for him I shall be highly gratified." Integral address leaf in Van Buren's hand to: "Wm T. Barry Esq/Washington DC." Docket penned perpendicular to address: "Mr. B./Address letter to/Alexandria Va./or Mrs Strothers/Perrin Washington" . Judge Parker was probably RICHARD ELLIOTT PARKER (1783-1840), a Virginia judge of the General Court and Circuit Court of Virginia who later served in the U.S. Senate (1836-1837). Mr. Nicholas was probably ROBERT CARTER NICHOLAS (1793-1857), nephew of late Virginia Congressmen John and Wilson Nicholas, who later represented Louisiana in the U.S. Senate. MAJOR BARRY served in the War of 1812 as secretary and Aide-de-Camp to Kentucky's first Governor, Isaac Shelby.

In Congress, Johnson opposed the imprisonment of debtors, argued against eliminating mail service on Sunday as a threat to the separation of church and state, and supported President Jackson. He also supported education and established an academy for Native Americans. His loyalty to Jackson won him the vice-presidential nomination on the Democratic ticket with Martin Van Buren in 1836. Van Buren won a majority in the Electoral College, but Johnson did not, and for the only time the choice of a vice president went to the U.S. Senate, which elected Johnson. Johnson returned to Kentucky in 1841, sat again in the legislature, and died in Frankfort on Nov. 19, 1850. Did you know. . . ?

President Martin Van Buren
Served 1837-1841 Martin Van Buren was born December 5, 1782, in Kinderhook, New York. His father owned a tavern, and when he was little, he listened to famous men such as Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr argue politics when they often visited. His nickname, "Old Kinderhook," has been credited as the origination of the American expression "OK," coined at that time for the town he was born in. Van Buren married Hannah Hoes on February 21, 1807, and had four sons. He was also called the "Little Magician" because he was so good at making politicians with different opinions agree. Elected Jackson's Vice-President in 1832, Van Buren became the last sitting Vice-President for 156 years to win election as President. A Democrat, Van Buren's Vice President was Richard M. Johnson. During his term, many important inventions changed American life, including Morse's telegraph, Deere's steel plow, McCormick's mechanical reaper, and Goodyear's vulcanized rubber. Slavery was a growing issue during Van Buren's time. Van Buren died July 24, 1862.

Biography

Richard Mentor Johnson, (1781-1850), 9th VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . He was born in Beargrass (now Louisville), Ky., on Oct. 17, 1781. He studied law at Transylvania University and was admitted to the bar in 1802. Johnson was elected to the state legislature in 1804. A Democrat, Johnson served in CONGRESS for three decades, both in the House (1807-1819 and 1829-1837) and the SENATE (1819-1829). A supporter of the War of 1812, he raised a body of mounted Kentucky riflemen. Opposing the British and Native Americans at the Battle of the Thames on Oct. 5, 1813, his troops performed brilliantly in support of Gen. William Henry Harrison. Colonel Johnson killed a Native American chief, possibly Tecumseh, and was severely wounded. His heroism greatly furthered his political career.
