PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
. As the first VICE PRESIDENT to succeed to the presidency on the death of an incumbent, he established precedents important to later vice presidents in similar circumstances. Like Andrew JOHNSON , who succeeded Abraham LINCOLN in 1865, Tyler served only a single termthe nearly full term remaining after the death of William Henry HARRISON in 1841. And, like Johnson, he too was engaged in bitter struggles with rivals in CONGRESS Early Career John Tyler was born in Charles City county, Va., on March 29, 1790. A member of the tobacco-planting aristocracy of Tidewater Virginia, he was the son of John Tyler, governor of Virginia from 1808 to 1811, and Mary Armistead. Bent on a political career, he attended the College of William and Mary, graduating in 1807. He then studied law and in 1809 was admitted to the bar. Two years later, at the age of 21, he was elected to the Virginia legislature. Then began a career in state and national politics that lasted with little interruption until he left the presidency. Rise in Politics After serving five years in the state legislature, Tyler was a member of the U. S.

John Tyler (1790-1862)
  • Education and Occupations:
      Education:
Tyler enrolled in the preparatory division of the College of William and Mary in 1802. He graduated from William and Mary, after completing college level studies, in 1807 From 1807-1809, he studied law under, successively, his father (John Tyler), his cousin (Chancellor Samuel Taylor), and the first U.S. Attorney General (Edmund Randolph). Tyler was accepted to the bar in 1809.
      Occupations:
During his 1816-1821 stay in the Virginia House of Delegates as a Jeffersonian Republican representative of Charles City County, Tyler led the effort to censure Virginia's two U.S. Senators for supporting the Bank of the United States after being instructed by the state legislature to do so. As a member of the House of Representatives from 1816-1821, Tyler opposed the Bank of the United States, high tariffs, and federally funded internal improvements. Also, he argued that the Missouri compromise was unconstitutional because it restricted slavery, and he rallied unsuccessfully for the censure of General Andrew Jackson for his 1818 invasion of Florida. After resigning from the House of Representatives due to poor health and a distaste for constantly being in the minority, Tyler was again elected as a Jeffersonian Republican representative of Charles City County to the Virginia House of Delegates, where he served from 1823-1825.

  • Winning the first presidency by a unanimous vote, with some individuals having wished to make Washington king, it seems unusual that he did not really want the position of president. Although a successful general and president, Washington remained interested in farming throughout his presidency. He bred animals, specializing in the breeding of mules and helped to raise the quality of stock across the nation. As the first president, Washington had many new tasks to accomplish with trial and error as the only available method for accomplishing them. After appointing people to head the four executive departments, he tried to meet with each head, or ] secretary, individually. This proved to be daunting. As a result he had the secretaries meet with him as a group, forming the government's first cabinet. New York was the nation’s first capital, but people felt that the capital should be outside the territory of any states. George Washington selected the site for our current capital between the states of Maryland and Virginia. While the new capital was being built, Washington led the country from Philadelphia, which served as a temporary capital.
