Licensing in the 21st Century - A Success Story: Hunter-Fleming from "Patent to Patient"!
It is well known that the pharmaceutical industry is suffering from the lack of new drugs to replace medicines which for many years have given the industrial giants strong cash flows and enormous profits, but are now out of patent or coming to the end of their patent protection. Not surprisingly, the financial press have been telling the investment community for some years that the industry needs to establish pipelines of new compounds. Moreover, development processes need to be accelerated. The newly appointed Head of Research at Novatis, Prof. Fishman, in an interview with the Financial Times (17.09.02 ) called for a complete overhaul of the way in which drug discovery is handled. In the last 15 years R & D expenditure has been about $30 billion and yet each year a declining number of new products is brought to the market. His solution is to work more closely with universities and hospitals. In his words, "this is to be a new approach " which his competitors will be watching closely.

  • At the dawn of the eleventh century BC, Brutus, great-grandson of Aeneas and first king of the island of Britain, lay dying. Like his famously unfortunate descendant King Lear, Brutus hit upon the notion of dividing the island between his three children. To his eldest son, Locrine, he bequeathed the fertile region east of the river Severn and south of the Humber; the portion west of the Severn he gave to his second son, Camber, and the northern remnant to the youngest, Albanactus. The map of Britain as Brutus drew it presents to modern eyes a truncated version of England, known then as Lhoegria, a gigantic Scotland, called Albania, and a somewhat distended Wales: Cambria.
This is the story told in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Regum Britanniae (c. 1136). Needless to say, the political map of Britain in Geoffrey's day did not resemble the one drawn by old king Brutus. The age when the Severn had marked the boundary between Saxon and British kingdoms, between Old English and early Welsh, was already five centuries past. Yet the ancient division did to some degree reflect contemporary administrative realities and political aspirations. Geoffrey of Monmouth was certainly no Welsh nationalist, but his allegiances were Cambro-Norman and Breton, rather than English; his patron was the Marcher Lord Robert Earl of Gloucester who, in common with his fellow regional warlords, had every interest in resisting the incursion of English monarchical authority over the Severn into the Welsh Marches.

    Geography
The United Kingdom (UK) comprises Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) and Northern Ireland and is one of the fifteen member states of the European Union. Its full name is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, but it is often shortened in everyday usage to 'Britain', or 'England'. The UK's area is some 244,100 square kilometres of which nearly 99% is land and the remainder inland water. This is slightly less than half the area of Thailand. It is just 1000 kilometres from the south coast to the far north and just under 500 kilometres in the widest part. There are numerous bays and inlets and no place in Britain is more than 120 kilometres from tidal water. The landscape varies dramatically throughout Britain. Northern Scotland is a wild, windswept region, broken by long arms of the sea that reach far inland. Much of Northern Ireland has low mountains and rolling fields. Wales is famous for its rugged mountains and deep green valleys. Most of England is covered by rolling plains, laid out in a patchwork of fields and meadows. The coastline is a shifting scene of steep cliffs, golden beaches, jagged rocks, and fishing towns tucked in sheltered bays. The old and new can be found almost everywhere. England has magnificent castles and atomic labratories, snug villages and sprwaling cities, and ancient universities and modern factories.
