Truman went to school in Independence, Missouri, but could not afford college, so he worked at several jobs and on his father's farm. he got his education the hard way, in the army. His Presidency: Truman took office when President Roosevelt died just before the end of World War II, and it was Truman who made the decision to use the atomic bomb against Japan. Seeing the need to stop the spread of Communism, he established the Truman Doctrine to support nations that were "threatened by armed minorities and outside pressure." He proposed the Marshall Plan to help war-torn countries and helped form NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. His Life: During his few weeks as Vice President, Harry S. Truman scarcely saw President Roosevelt, and received no briefing on the development of the atomic bomb or the unfolding difficulties with Soviet Russia. Suddenly these and a host of other wartime problems became Truman's to solve when, on April 12, 1945, he became President. He told reporters, "I felt like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me."

Harry S. Truman, (1884-1972), 33rd president of the United States, sworn into office at the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as World War II was reaching its climax. He authorized the dropping of the atomic bomb at Hiroshima, thus ending the war with Japan. Working to enforce a lasting peace, he helped plan a world organization of nations, and initiated the cold war foreign policy of containing communism. Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri on May 8, 1884, the son of John Anderson Truman, a cattle trader and farmer, and Martha Young Truman. He was a distant relative of John Tyler, the tenth president of the United States. Harry attended grade school and high school in Independence, Mo. As a child with impaired vision, and having a fear of injury while wearing eyeglasses, he eschewed sports and normal childhood activities, spending most of his time reading. Later, he made the statement, "By the time I was 13 or 14 years old, I had read all the books in the Independence Public Library." His high school history teacher, Mathilda Brown, said of him, "I doubt if there was a student in any high school in the country who knew more of the history of the United States than Harry did." Truman also took piano lessons, and throughout his life, loved to play for his own enjoyment and for others.

Biography

Harry S. Truman, (1884-1972), 33d PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . Most Americans in the 1950s did not expect that Harry Truman would become one of their most highly regarded presidents. By 1952, just before he announced his decision not to run again, only 25% of the people thought he was doing a good job. Within a decade, however, most American historians regarded him as one of the nation's greatest presidents. To be sure, a "revisionist" view developed that attacked his record at home and abroad, picturing him as ineffective in some areas, oppressive in others, and as the architect of the Cold War. Yet the favorable appraisal seemed to be the dominant American view. Appraisals of presidents depend on the observer's assumptions concerning what leaders should try to accomplish and what they are capable of accomplishing. Obviously, Truman was not so effective in domestic affairs as his predecessor, Franklin ROOSEVELT , had been in the 1930's, but Truman's opportunities were smaller. He might have accomplished more had he pressed his proposals more boldly, yet his appraisal of political realities persuaded him that he could not do so. He was unable to gain acceptance for many new domestic proposals in such areas as health and education, but he provided publicity for them. He expanded and improved established programs and defended them against attempts by their foes to weaken them. And he worked harder on behalf of civil rights than any of his predecessors.

USS Augusta Transports President Truman to and from the Potsdam Conference, July - August 1945
On 7 July 1945, USS Augusta (CA-31) stood out of Hampton Roads, Virginia, bound for Europe. On board were President Harry S. Truman and his party, en route to attend the "Big Three" conference at Potsdam, Germany. After being escorted through the English Channel by the Royal Navy, Augusta arrived at Antwerp, Belgium, on 15 July. President Truman left the ship there to continue his trip by road and air. When the Potsdam Conference ended on 2 August, Truman flew to England, rejoining Augusta at Plymouth, where he was visited by King George VI. That afternoon, the cruiser went back to sea. She arrived at Newport News on 7 August, where the President disembarked to return to Washington, DC. This page presents views of President Truman's voyages to and from the Potsdam Conference.

HARRY S. TRUMAN 33rd President of the United States In the election of 1944 President Franklin Roosevelt chose Senator Harry S. Truman to be his vice presidential candidate. On April 12, 1945 Roosevelt died and Truman became the 33rd president. In 1945 he made the decision to drop two atomic bombs on Japan, finally ending the war. Truman steered the U.S. through the post-war period with colorful, no-nonsense harangues that have since grown legendary. He was re-elected in 1948 in a contest many expected him to lose to the Republican candidate, Thomas Dewey. (A famous photograph shows Truman holding up a premature edition of the Chicago Tribune with the headline "Dewey Defeats Truman.") Growing discontent with the U.S. involvement in Korea led Truman to give up politics at the end of his second term. He was succeeded as president by Dwight D. Eisenhower

"The Buck Stops Here," "Plain speaker," "Give 'em hell" all conjure up images of Harry S. Truman, the U.S. president remembered for his doctrine of communist containment as well as his decision to end World War II by unleashing the atom bomb on Japan. Born on a farm near Lamar, Missouri, on May 8, 1884, Truman graduated from high school in 1901 and held a variety of jobs before fighting in France as a lieutenant in the National Guard. After the war, he and a friend opened a haberdashery store, but the economy was bad and the business failed. At age 38, with the help of Kansas City political boss Thomas J. Pendergast, Truman won a country judgeship. Truman attended law school at nights, lost re-election in 1924 and was elected to another term in 1926. In 1934, with Pendergast's help, he was elected to the Senate and was branded a "Pendergast" senator upon his arrival in Washington. He was a reliable "New Dealer." His hard work, diligence and fairness to all earned the respect of his colleagues. In his second term, which he won without the help of Pendergast, he enhanced his reputation by chairing the Special Committee Investigating National Defense, exposing graft, waste and corruption and saving the United States much money. Domestically Truman worked for civil rights legislation and reformed the foreign affairs apparatus. The Foreign Service Act of 1946 professionalized the Foreign Service. The National Security Act of 1947 created the CIA, the National Security Council and the present-day Defense Department, with civilian control over the military.

During his second term, however, he was frustrated in his attempt to obtain civil rights legislation, federal aid to education, and a repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act, as well as his efforts to set up a public power project and a national health insurance system. He did manage to hold the line on such basic New Deal items as subsidies to farmers, public housing, social security, and the minimum wage. Truman chose not to seek renomination in 1952 and retired to Independence, where he resided until his death on Dec. 26, 1972.

Truman—not Roosevelt, Eisenhower, or Kennedy—who energized the modern civil rights movement, a movement that had basically stalled since Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves. That bold statement is at the heart of Harry Truman and Civil Rights: Moral Courage and Political Risks , by Michael R. Gardner with forewords by George M. Elsey and Kweisi Mfume Now a selection of the History Book Club Harry Truman and Civil Rights: Moral Courage and Political Risks (352 pages, 28 illus., $35.00 cloth, February 9, 2002) is the first biography to focus on Harry Truman as a pioneer, even a hero, in the modern civil rights movement. Who was less likely to make a bold stand for civil rights than Truman? From the border state of Missouri, he grew up in a culture that accepted segregation. His maternal and paternal grandparents had owned slaves; and his beloved mother, who suffered at the hands of Yankee forces, railed against Abraham Lincoln until her death at 94. Yet Truman evolved from a child of his time and place into a visionary champion for civil rights.

Statement issued by U.S. President Harry S. Truman on August 6, 1945, announcing that the United States had dropped a single atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima earlier that day. Truman described the bomb as a revolutionary new force for destruction, harnessing the basic power of the universe and having more force than 20,000 tons of TNT. More than 70,000 people were killed. The U.S. president warned that if the Japanese continued to refuse to surrender unconditionally, "they may expect a rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth." On August 9, the United States dropped a second atomic bomb, on Nagasaki.
Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima Announcement, Harry S. Truman, 1945 STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT ANNOUNCING THE USE OF THE A-BOMB AT HIROSHIMA Sixteen Hours Ago an American airplane dropped one bomb on Hiroshima, an important Japanese Army base. That bomb had more power than 20,000 tons of T.N.T. It had more than two thousand times the blast power of the British "Grand Slam" which is the largest bomb ever yet used in the history of warfare. The Japanese began the war from the air at Pearl Harbor. They have been repaid many fold. And the end is not yet. With this bomb we have now added a new and revolutionary increase in destruction to supplement the growing power of our armed forces. In their present form these bombs are now in production and even more powerful forms are in development.

Despite his plainspoken ways, Harry S. Truman had a sweeping grasp of geopolitical realities. He was also a friend of the Jews who had made clear his support for the Zionist cause before WWII. He was strengthened in his resolve to help the Jews following the revelations of Nazi atrocities. On May 25, 1939, following the British White Paper of 1939 that limited Jewish immigration, Truman inserted a remark in the Congressional Record condemning the White paper as a repudiation of British obligations. At a Chicago rally in 1944, then Senator Truman said, " Today, not tomorrow, we must do all that is humanly possible to provide a haven for all those who can be grasped from the hands of Nazi butchers. Free lands must be opened to them." Truman wrote in his memoirs

Intense feeling too often obscures the truth. You can always amend a big plan, but you can never expand a little one. I don't believe in little plans. I believe in plans big enough to meet a situation which we can't possibly foresee now. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit. If you can't convince 'em, confuse 'em.
