Is triathlon's Olympic status in jeopardy?

IOC threat to ITU rolls toward December 10 showdown in Lausanne
By Timothy Carlson
Senior Correspondent
This report filed December 5, 2001

After triathlon's splendid debut at the 2000 Games in Sydney, everything seemed on the fast track for the sport to remain on the permanent roster of Olympic events. Then, one week ago, an Associated Press story datelined London ran on the front pages of sports sections of the New York Times , the Los Angeles Times, USA Today and around the country with ominous headlines: "Triathlon's Olympic status in jeopardy." In the AP article, IOC officials stated they were concerned about "infighting" that has plagued the sport and expressed dissatisfaction that the ITU had failed to respond to two letters from the IOC asking to explain and respond to the accusations made by dissatisfied factions in Europe, Canada and Latin America. IOC director general Francois Carrard was quoted by the AP as saying: "These personal quarrels damage the credibility of the sport and the athletes." IOC sports director Gilbert Felli told the AP last week: "We are still waiting for them to give some explanation. We have not had a satisfactory response." When asked if the sport could be stripped of Olympic recognition and expelled from the Olympics, Felli refused to be reassuring and simply reiterated that the IOC had the power to do so. "The Olympic Charter says that the IOC can take that decision. It's a fact."

Run portion of the September 1974 Triathlon, San Diego, CA. Even though the 1904 Olympic games had an event titled "Triathlon" consisting of the long jump, shot put and 100-yard dash. Triathlon as we know it in America got its start in San Diego, California in September 1974, four years before the famed Ironman saw its birth in Hawaii, and 53 years after the first known actual swim, bike, run event. This first known Triathlon event was held on September 4, 1921 in Marseilles, France. The Petit Perillon swim club held they race and called it " Course Des Trois Sports." This translates to "The Race of Three Sports." The race consisted of a bicycle leg of about 7K (4.2 miles), a run of 5K (3.1 miles), and finished with a 200 meter swim. This first actual Triathlon was won by Lulu Helmet. The founders of the sport, Jack Johnstone and Don Shanahan had never put on a race before the inaugural event. The actual race took place on a Wednesday evening because no arrangements could be made for a weekend event. The headline in the San Diego Track Club Newsletter read: RUN, CYCLE, SWIM: TRIATHLON SET FOR 25TH

GOING THE DISTANCE
History of Triathlon in Bermuda
Excerpt from Joe Pagnam's article in the 1995 ITU Bermuda Triathlon World Cup Race Programme
Triathlon in Bermuda has a history almost as long as the relatively young sport itself. The first official triathlon to take place in Bermuda was held in 1979 and was a far cry from the hi-tech sophisticated events that take place today. Jim Butterfield, who has been integral to Bermuda triathlons, organised this first event which took place in and around Harrington Sound. Things were a little different back then. For one thing, the order of events consisted of a 1,000 yard triangular swim, followed by a 7.1 mile run around Harrington Sound and a 14.2 mile (two-lap) cycle to round off the race.
The ten men and five women who lined up for the start were pioneers of sorts. Some of them were inspired by the challenge, others never competed again! Jim Butterfield had given up his chance to compete in 1979 as he was busy coordinating the event, but others such as Bob Oliver, Midge Oliver, Linda Dillon and Marianne Herbert are still competing today. (Watch for
Linda Dillon in Hawaii Ironman 2000) Those who did compete were only aware of the upcoming event a few weeks in advance so training was limited. All of the individual competitors, with the exception of winner Richard Goodwin, who was a leading Island cyclist, were basically runners. Fluorescent colours and tight Spandex outfits were yet to hit our shores, and the females just wore the bikinis they took to

Sheila Taormina
Few are fortunate enough to represent their country in the Olympic Games, fewer still make a return trip and only a handful participate as an athlete in two different sports. Count Georgia graduate Sheila Taormina, the swimmer turned triathlete, among the chosen. On July 25, 1996, after turning in the fastest prelim split on the American swimming squad, Taormina became the first Masters swimmer ever to win Olympic gold. On that day, at the age of 26, she teamed with fellow Americans Trina Jackson, Cristina Teuscher and Jenny Thompson for a gold medal-winning performance in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
Now in the second chapter of her story, Taormina travels to Sydney, Australia, at the end of August, representing the United States in the triathlon. Taormina earned her position on this year's Olympic squad after winning the women's Olympic triathlon trials in Irving, Texas, on Saturday, May 27. Triathlon, which consists of swimming, cycling and running, will make its first appearance as a medal sport at the Olympic Games in Sydney. The women's competition will be held on September 16.

    Finally an Olympic Triathlon
    Dateline: 8/28/2000 At last, an Olympic Triathlon. It has been too long coming and, for me, a twenty plus year wait. My first experience with the triathlon was as a competitor in a "sprint" race. In that case it was a 200 meter swim, 10 mile bike and a 5k run. Later, I was to direct two more competitions at the same distances. I very quickly found that I was not cut out to be a race director as a career path. I gained a new appreciation and respect for race directors, especially those willing to take on a multi-sport event. The day after the last one I did (which all said was a great success) I was sore in places I didn't know existed. I thought I had competed in the race except that I probably would have recovered quicker had I actually done so. The up coming Olympic Triathlon will prove to be one of the premier events of this Olympiad.

    The History of the Olympic Games
    The first Olympic Games were held at Olympia in 776 BC. Some people have thought that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. (Olympia is in Greece) The only event held at the first Olympics was the stadium footrace. The Olympics were important to the Ancient Greeks. The only event in the first 13 games was a running race of 192 meters. Archologists have traced the founding of the Olympic games to King Iphitos, who planted the olive tree from which the wreaths for the winners were cut. Olympic Games were held in the valley of Olympia in Greece every four years for almost 1200 years. Inspired by the ancient Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin started the modern Olympic Games in 1896. They attracted about 245 athletes (ALL MEN) in 43 events. At the Sydney 2000 Games, more than 10,000 athletes will take part in 300 events. The Olympic Movement has survived wars, and terrorism to become a symbol of the ability of the people of all nations to come together in peace and friendship. The Ancient Olympic Games, honored Zeus, the king of the gods.
    In 708 B.C., wrestling and the pentathlon were added. The pentathlon was jumping, running, discus throw, the javelin throw, and wrestling all together. Boxing was added in 688 B.C., and the four-horse chariot race was added in 680 B.C. Horse racing was added in 648 B.C. Some unusual events included in the Olympics were a race in armour, a chariot race called the apene in which two mules pulled the chariot, and a competition for trumpeters.

    Triathlon made its debut at the Sydney Olympic Games on the first day of competition. Triathlon is an exciting multi-sport for all ages and abilities. The event involves:
    * Swimming
    * Cycling
    * Running
    It is a continuous race against the clock and fellow competitors. The distances of events can vary, however standards are set for:
    The sprint distance
    The "Triathlon" distance
    The Middle distance
    The "Ironman" History The history of the sport is relatively short and is reputed to date back to around 1974 in Southern California when a group of friends began to train together. The group contained mostly runners, a few swimmers and the odd cyclists or two. It wasn't long before the group was organising informal fun runs and races, followed by events containing swimming and running, and a natural progression led to include cycling. Triathlon thus evolved from this healthy way of life in Southern California. Today over 350 Triathlon events are held in Great Britain alone, in addition to duathlons, which combine any two of the three disciplines on Triathlon. These events are administered by the British Triathlon Association.
