    44. Martin E. Tessler M.D.
Over 22 years experience utilizing the most advanced micrograft techniques to permanently and naturally restore hair to balding men and women experiencing hair loss.
    http://www.tessler.com/
    Dear Prospective Patient,
You're visiting our web site because you are curious about a permanent, natural solution to hairloss.
Among all of the choices for accomplishing a restored, youthful look, only the surgical approach is both permanent and natural.
Our personal goal is to retain our status among the very best and most respected hair replacement surgeons in the world. Dr. Tessler, for example, is the only physician in Michigan specializing in the field to have been named in The Best Doctors in America, (a health professional referral guide compiled by surveying the opinions of 5,000 physicians) from 1996 through 2002.
This and other professional accomplishments result from a dedication to knowledge that has taken us around the world with representatives of our skilled nursing staff to learn the latest, most effective surgical methods. Together, we and our staff offer superb surgical proficiency in a dignified caring environment.
We are often told by patients many of whom come from all over the world that they've "shopped around" and they were ultimately impressed with the startling differences between our clinic and others. This is a private practice with a stable, committed staff; not a unit in a franchise-style enterprise with rotating doctors and personnel.

Who is a candidate for a heart transplant?
Heart transplantation is a last-resort option for people with heart failure . To be considered for a heart transplant, a person's heart must be unresponsive to other forms of treatment and all other vital organs must be in excellent health. How is heart transplantation done? The surgery must be performed immediately after a suitable donor heart becomes available. The recipient is placed on a heart-lung machine that takes over the functions of the heart and lungs so the diseased heart can be removed and replaced with the new heart. Once the blood vessels are reconnected, the heart is ready to function. Are there any complications? One of the main complications following heart transplantation is rejection. The body's immune system treats the new organ as foreign tissue and produces antibodies to destroy it. Immunosuppressive drugs such as cyclosporine (sie-klo-SPOR-in) are given to suppress this response. In cases of severe rejection, retransplantation may be considered if a new donor can be found. In the past, side effects of anti-rejection drugs kept elderly persons and infants from being recipients of heart transplants. Now, improvements in the field have made it possible for many newborns to those in their seventies to be eligible for a transplant.

Needlefast Evergreens is a full service tree nursery and Christmas tree business. The business was started in 1957 by William Nickelson who purchased an existing tree farm planted with Scotch pine. Then in 1957, after being unable to find a reliable source of tree seedlings, a half pound of seed was planted. From those humble beginnings Needlefast Evergreens was born. The second generation, Jim and Nancy, came into the business in the 1970's and now manage the operations. We take great pride in our trees and the growing experience and the knowledge that has been acquired in the past 45 plus years. Active members of the National Christmas Tree Association and The Michigan Christmas Tree Association , we are also very involved in the Michigan Seedling Growers Association. Our nursery has expanded and now specializes in seedlings and transplants for Christmas tree growers as well as soil conservation districts, other nurseries and the private landowner. Our Christmas tree operation has also been growing and we now specialize in Fraser fir, Douglas fir, Balsam fir, Concolor fir and Grand fir as well as growing other types of "exotic" firs. We have worked closely with Bob Girardin, who publishes "Exotic Conifer News"

    Heart and Lung Transplants
In the three decades since the performance of the first human heart transplant in December 1967, the procedure has changed from an experimental operation to an established treatment for advanced heart disease. Approximately 2,300 heart transplants are performed each year in the United States. In 1981, combined heart and lung transplants began to be used to treat patients with conditions that severely damage both these organs. As of 1995, about 500 people in the United States and 2,000 worldwide have received heart-lung transplants. There have been two main barriers to increasing the number of successful operations. In 1983, the first barrier to successful transplantations was overcome. That barrier was the rejection of the donor organ by the patient. The drug cyclosporine was introduced to suppress rejection of a donor heart or heart-lung by the patient's body. Cyclosporine and other medications to control rejection have significantly improved the survival of transplant patients. About 80 percent of heart transplant patients survive 1 year or more. About 60 percent of heart-lung transplants live at least 1 year after surgery. Research is under way to develop even better ways to control transplant rejection and improve survival.

Drug therapy may reduce liver transplants
    September 19, 1997
Web posted at: 9:09 p.m. EDT (0109 GMT) BOSTON (CNN) In the United States this year, about 1,000 people will die waiting for a liver transplant. But by using an existing drug in a new way, doctors may be able to relieve at least some of the pressure on the nation's limited supply of donor organs. About 7 percent of all liver transplants go to people suffering from a disease called primary biliary cirrhosis, an auto-immune disorder that is the fourth leading cause of liver failure. This chronic condition which, despite the word "cirrhosis" in its name, is not related to alcohol consumption almost exclusively affects women. There is no known cure. But doctors have discovered that methotrexate, a common cancer chemotherapy drug, can slow or even reverse the progression of the disease when used in combination with two other drugs. CNN's Al Hinman reports The irony is that liver patients aren't supposed to take methotrexate because it can cause liver damage. "If you ever take the package insert out of a bottle of methotrexate, in big, bold letters it says, 'Warning. Do not administer or give to anybody with liver disease,'" said Dr. Marshall Kaplan of Tufts/New England Medical Center.

    Hair Transplants FAQ
Hair Transplants A hair transplant can be one of the most effective methods of improving the hair growth on a particular area of the scalp. This method of hair replacement has been carried out successfully since the early 1950's. For more than fifty years hair transplantation has been the natural, permanent solution to restoring living, growing hair to balding and thinning areas. However it is only in the past decade or so the surgical techniques of some physicians have made it possible to re-create the look of a man's original, natural hairline. Of all the male cosmetic procedures performed a hair transplant is the most popular and growing in popularity and of all cosmetic procedures for men, hair surgery has the potential to produce the most dramatic change in one's appearance. However achieving the correct end result can be very traumatic for the patient.

New technique increases success of bone marrow transplants
February 14, 1998 Web posted at: 10:37 p.m. EST (0337 GMT) PHILADELPHIA (CNN) When someone has leukemia, bone marrow transplants are the best hope for survival. But there are some major obstacles it's very difficult to find a well-matched donor, and, even when one is found, the transplant more often than not doesn't work. But at a meeting this week of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Suzanne Ilstad of the Allegheny University of the Health Sciences in Philadelphia unveiled a new advance in bone marrow transplantation that may solve both of those problems. Ilstad has come up with a new technique for performing transplants. It has been tried in 25 patients and all of them had a successful transplant. That compares with a 30 percent success rate using the traditional transplant technique. "We have been able to identify a way to engineer a bone marrow transplant to take out all the bad cells that cause graft-versus-host disease," said Ilstad.

    Introduction
This booklet has been written to help you, your family and friends understand more about stem cell and bone marrow transplants. If your doctor has told you that either of these may be a possible treatment option for you, we hope that this booklet will help you understand what they involve. We also hope that the booklet will help you to prepare yourself and that it will answer some of your questions about these treatments. The idea of a transplant or high dose treatment and stem cell support can be frightening. These are intensive procedures which may be stressful for both you and the people close to you. We hope that by reading this booklet you will feel better informed and therefore more confident about the treatment you are having. If after reading this booklet you think it has helped you, do pass it on to any of your family and friends who may find it useful. They too may want to be informed so that they can help you cope with your treatment. If you are a parent whose child is to have either of these treatments, we hope you will find this booklet helpful in explaining the procedures. CancerBACUP has a booklet
