Oct. 13, 1995 For Release: Upon Receipt CONTACT: Elaine Harrington UVM RECEIVES NATIONAL PARK SERVICE GRANT TO TEACH HISTORIC PRESERVATION IN BUILDING TRADES The University of Vermont's Historic Preservation Program has received a $33,400 grant from the National Park Service to develop a pilot course that would enable building trades teachers to earn a certificate in preservation education skills. This grant, which comes from the Park Service's National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, is aimed at high school and post-secondary vocational building trades teachers. The new three-credit continuing education course will be offered next summer by UVM's Historic Preservation Summer Institute. It will present "methods for building trades teachers and vocational education instructors to integrate historic preservation into their classes," said Thomas Visser, interim director of UVM's Historic Preservation Program and professor for this course. The Preservation Institute for the Building Crafts, based in Windsor, is also participating in this effort. Director Judy Hayward is co-director of the project. Both in-state and out-of-state students are sought, as the long-range goal is to encourage a national trend of integrating historical preservation into high school and vocational education programs. To encourage a variety of building trades instructors to take this class, some scholarships will be offered. Posted on: 10/29/2002 Mold Prevention: Trades Can Work Together By Bruce M. Small, P.E. There is no reason that well-designed and well-built modern buildings should go moldy. Walls and ceiling surfaces are usually where a building occupant first notices mold. Sometimes, it arises in cold spots where insulation is inadequate or has settled over time. Mold often shows up first as a stain from a water leak, gradually getting darker as the mold colonizes within the damp area. Inevitably, we all point at the wall or ceiling first, even if it is far removed from the actual source of moisture penetration and mold growth. Mold growth in buildings should be considered a mishap, not an inevitable consequence of age. Such mishaps are fully preventable and fully fixable. The more every contractor knows about how to prevent mold growth, the more likely we are to build good buildings that stay free of microbial contamination. JetCare takeover highlights safety concerns
Licensed aircraft engineers have called on the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to heed comments by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau that commercial considerations should not influence maintenance procedures. The Bureau's comments, based on an investigation into the grounding of Ansett Boeing 767 aircraft in 2000 and 2001, coincides with rumours of the impending sale of Virgin's maintenance arm, JetCare, to Patricks. Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA) federal secretary David Kemp said the report came at an important time for Australia air safety.

BCTD Departments
The BCTD supports all of its 15 affiliate unions in the delivery of apprenticeship training to potential members and journey-level training as continuing education to union members. These programs ensure that high standards of craftsmanship will continue the building trades's tradition of excellence. All these programs are created through labor-management partnerships , which mean strong working relationships between labor unions and employers. Contractors realize the benefits of having well-trained crafts men and women who are productive as well as knowledgeable about the hazards of construction sites and ways to prevent accidents. More than 180,000 apprentices learn their crafts each year, and tens of thousands of journey-level workers upgrade their skills and undergo specialized health and safety training. Because new technologies and materials are constantly coming into use on construction job sites, workers need to keep updating their skills and understanding. The training programs' curricula is also developed through a joint labor-management partnership. Journey-level and master craftworkers meet with contractors, manufacturing representatives and curriculum development specialists provided through the AFL-CIO's George Meany Center for Labor Studies to create courses and develop instructional materials. In some cases, the curricula development teams work with safety experts at OSHA and the Department of Labor.

Industrial Technology and Trades
Courses in industrial technology and trades provide students with a hands-on approach to learning about materials, tools, machines and processes used in various industries and occupations. The student will learn and practice skills in a setting similar to the work place. Skills can be learned in automotive technology, autobody and welding, carpentry, criminal justice, drafting, electronics, food occupations, health occupations, machining and wood technology. Skills learned can be used in everyday life or as preparations for a job. 1-2 semesters 0.5 credit each
This course may be taken for one semester or for a full year. Topics include drafting, wood technology, metal work, electricity, and technology. This course is highly recommended for any students who would like to take any additional industrial or trades courses. The program will contain shop procedures involving both hand and power tools, with considerable emphasis on shop safety. Drafting provides an introduction to equipment and multi-view drawings for shop projects. Wood technology provides an introduction to different skills and operations in the milling and assembly of wood products. Metals provide an introduction to sheet metal fabrication. What started as a way to help kids get employable vocational skills in the Keys has become a model program fro 37 high schools in Texas. Marathon High School and Key West High School both boast new construction-technology labs, just installed this year. Houston officials visited in September to find out how to employ the program in their schools. The Marathon classes, which incorporate the use of 16 construction modules, are designed to teach a variety of job skills that would have a career path, said Mark Hooper, the Monroe County School District's coordinator of vocational services. "The construction [module] is not only designed to provide students with a career path after high school, but also give kids the chance to learn very practical knowledge," he said.

    The A+ Computer Repair course is a comprehensive, hands-on curriculum to prepare technicians with the necessary career skills and certification to meet computer industry standards.     Solano College welding instructors fire up students over job prospects
    In a high-tech age, this 'voc ed' program remains popular. At a time when machine shops are giving way to computer labs and coveralls are being replaced by lab coats, the welding program at Solano Community College is still turning out welders who easily find gainful employment. Located a stone's throw from the industrial towns of Vallejo and Richmond, Solano College was at one time a major training center for workers at the Mare Island Shipyards and the Richmond oil refineries. Despite the shut down of the shipyards, however, Solano continues to be a major supplier of certificated welders who are finding their work in demand in the Bay Area's booming building trades. Solano offers both day and evening courses, for new students and those returning to upgrade their skills. Job market is good "Right now, the job market is so good, it's a problem keeping students in the program - they keep getting lured away," said Dave Nourot, head of the welding department. "As much as possible, I try to encourage them to go on to get their four-year degree." Nourot, who jokes that administrators "would have to blow me out of here," teaches daytime courses in welding technology, industrial welding and ornamental iron welding. Other welding courses, including plate welding and pipe welding, are offered in the evening for those already in the trade, and are taught by part-time instructors Thomas Via and Ray Sanderson.

    Teach by example July 18, 2002 On time and on budget. That's been the proud refrain of Bradley Tech construction representatives since the $50 million project on Milwaukee's south side began. Now, though, Bradley Tech Commission's chairman, Jack McDonough, says the 280,000-square-foot Milwaukee Tech replacement will not be ready by the first day of classes, Sept. 5. That comes as quite a surprise to us, as just last month John McGregor, the school's representative with Irgens Development Partners LLC, and Lyle Balistreri, president of the Milwaukee Building and Construction Trades Council and construction coordinator for the commission, made assurances that Bradley Tech would be ready for the beginning of the coming school year.
