One way to trim the fat from a bloated Olympic docket
Click here for more on this story Latest: Thursday September 28, 2000 06:57 PM SYDNEY, Australia The International Olympic Committee is frequently taken to task for adding new sports to its already overcrowded schedule. (Did we really need to make an Olympic sport out of trampoline?) The fault, however, is not that new sports are added, since the Games should stay relevant to the interests of society at large. The fault lies in that more sports aren't thrown out on their respective ears. It didn't used to be that way. Cricket, croquet and the once beloved "equestrian high jump" were evicted after the 1900 Games. The "plain high dive," which allowed no twists or somersaults, used to be an Olympic sport. So was live pigeon shooting. Now they won't even release live pigeons as part of the Opening Ceremonies, fearful of traumatizing the little beasts. Golf left after after 1904, the same year the fearful "plunge for distance," a diving event, met its Olympic demise. After 1920 the still popular tug-of-war was given the heave-ho daddy-o, and in 1932 "rope climbing" and the curiously named "club swinging" were discarded. The last sport to get the axe? Polo in 1936. Small wonder the Olympics is now so bloated it can't get up from its own stuffed couch.

It's almost time for Olympic Fever. The kids will barely be back in school when from September 15 to October 1, 2000, most of us will be glued to our television sets, watching the games taking place in Sydney, Australia.
The 2000 Summer Olympic Competition events fall within the following categories:
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon
    Debut Sport: Trampoline
    Individual: Men Only
    Individual: Women Only
Team Events: Men Only Team Events: Women Only Team Events: Men and Women Equestrian Debut Sport: Triathlon Featured Competition: Rowing
  • Featured Competition: Modern Pentathlon This event isn't for slackers. It also helps if you're a morning person, too. Competition starts at 5:30 A.M. with a pistol shoot at a bull's-eye target 10 meters away. After that, there's the dueling and fencing for "first blood," where a single touch wins. Then it's on to the pool, where competitors swim a 200-meter sprint; stroke style is each competitor's choice. Without even taking time to dry off, competitors head to the equestrian arena where they each coax an unfamiliar horse around and over a course of fences. Then, after "resting" atop that horse for a bit, there's a final, two-mile cross-country run. The entire competition takes about 12 hours.

    THE OLYMPIC TRADITION
    THE OLYMPIC FLAG

The Olympic flag or symbol is constituted by 5 different coloured rings, blue, yellow, black, green and red. These intertwined rings were designed in 1913 by the founder of the Modern Olympics Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The five colours combined with the white background was said by Coubertin to have symbolic meaning:
" These five rings represent the five parts of the world now won over to the Olympism and ready to accept its fertile rivalries. Also the six colours thus combined represent those of all nations, with no exceptions. This is a real international emblem."
The flag was made in Paris, at a shop adjoining the Baron's birthplace. 3 metres long, 2 metres wide, the flag first appeared officially in Paris on the twentieth anniversary of the re-establishment of the games in 1914. It was first hoisted over an Olympic stadium in 1920, during the Antwerp Games.
At the Antwerp Games the flag also first appeared carrying the new Olympic motto: "Citius, Altius, Fortius" which is Latin for Faster, Higher, Stronger. It was devised by an educationalist friend of Coubertin a Dominican monk, Father Henri Didon.
The rings, the flag and the motto are the exclusive property of the International Olympic Committee and cannot be used without its authorisation.

14 soldiers go to Olympic Track and Field Trials
by Harriet Rice ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Army News Service, July 11, 2000) For the first time in the era of the all-volunteer Army, more than a dozen soldiers are headed to the Olympic Track and Field Trials, July 14-23, in Sacramento, Calif. Pre-VOLAR, many college track stars were drafted, and soldiers brought home medals from a variety of Olympic Track and Field events: pole vault, shot put, long jump, 200 meters, 4x100 and 4x400 relays. In 1980, the U.S. boycotted the summer Olympic Games in the former USSR. In 2000, the 14 soldiers headed to California are on a rebuilding mission: to put Army athletes back on the U.S. Olympic Track and Field team. The soldiers are assigned to the Army World Class Athlete Program, which provides soldiers who are nationally ranked in Olympic sports full-time training opportunities. In addition to maintaining their military skills, their Army job is to train and win for the black and gold. Top long jump contender Spc. Dawn Burrell will be up against some stiff competition, with all eyes trained on national favorites Marion Jones and Inga Miller. But Burrell, who joined the Army in 1997 is focused. The 26-year-old Pennsylvania native trains at the University of Houston in Texas with Coach Wen Yong Yang. She met one of her career goals at the 1999 U.S. Track and Field National Championships with a gold medal long jump of 6.96 meters (more than 18 feet) - the sixth best jump in U.S. history. "I love the sport because it's fun. I enjoy jumping and I love to see the results of all my hard work," said Burrell.
