GEOGRAPHY With an area of 56,600 square kilometers, a population of 3.9 million inhabitants and a narrow coastline overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Togo is one of the smallest countries of West Africa. Bordered by Ghana to the west and the People's Republic of Benin to the east, Togo is a long, narrow nation running 600 km. north to south. Togo is a country of plains crossed from south-west to north-east by a long range of mountains alternating with plateaus, giving the country a kind of armature. Plateaus can be found in the Akposso and Akebou regions, and mountains at Adele, Fazao, and Malfakassa, outlined by the hills of Bassar and the plains of Oti and Kara. Low mountain massifs are found at Kolina-Boa, and a high plateau at Soudou. The highest point is Mt. Agou, at 986 meters. Togo enjoys a tropical climate, influenced by the southeast monsoon, which brings rain, and also by the Harmattan, a wind from the Sahara which heralds the dry season. Year round, high temperatures range from 78° to 87°F with lows 65° to 75°F. Togo is the only country in the world whose capital, Lome, is situated on an international border, with Ghana.
