Sportdiving Shipwrecks
The titanic... the Andrea Doria... the Lusitania... the Edmund Fitzgerald... The list of doomed ships stretches from man's first efforts in rickety, little wooden rafts many centuries ago, to the mighty oceanliners of today. The logbooks and eye witness accounts of those terrible disasters tell of courage, determination, panic, fear and incredible survivals. Sometimes they even reveal the dark and deadly secrets of why some ships really sink to the bottom. Read the story of what happened when they found the Titanic. For dozens of years that tragedy was blamed primarily on the incompetence of the ships' navigators and a collision with an iceberg. But when they found the ship... And, here's a twist of irony: One of the most popular adventures for cruise ship passengers these days is a scuba diving trip to the graveyards of the sea, it's fascinating!

DNA Identifies Child Victim of Titanic Shipwreck By Mary Wilcox HALIFAX (Reuters) - It has taken 90 years, the latest in DNA technology and a television documentary to do it, but the "Unknown Child" from the doomed Titanic has finally been identified. The crew of the Canadian recovery ship Mackay-Bennett found the body of the young, fair-haired boy a few days after the steamer sank, with the loss of 1,517 lives. But there was no identification and the crewmen decided to take the body to Halifax and pay for a proper funeral, burying the little coffin at the top of a hill in Fairview Lawn Cemetery, along with 120 other Titanic victims. The headstone reads "Unknown Child" and over the years it has attracted the attention of cemetery visitors. Now the experts have determined it was the body of Eino Viljami Panula, who was 13 months old when the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912. He was one of five brothers from Finland who died in the disaster, along with their mother. "The unknown child is now a known child, identified and returned to his family," said Ryan Parr of Canada's Lakehead University, who coordinated the work of over 50 scientists, genealogists and Titanic researchers.

    900 hospitalised in southern Russia
    AFP, Moscow
A worsening food epidemic traced to contaminated dairy products continued to sweep through several regions in southern Russia yesterday, with more than 900 people hospitalised, the interfax news agency reported. The victims, who are suffering from acute stomach infection, include 622 children, an unnamed official from the task force set up to deal with the crisis told Interfax yesterday. People appeared to have been poisoned by bad milk, cream and yoghurt from a factory in the town of Kropotkin, in the Krasnodar region, where two employees had been diagnosed with dysentery. All produce from the dairy plant has been withdrawn from sale. Most of those infected are from Krasnodar, but nearly 80 other cases were also reported in the neighbouring regions of Rostov, Stavropol, Adygea and North Ossetia. Russia's chief medical officer, Gennady Onischenko, who flew to the region, was quoted as saying by Interfax that "the number of people hospitalised is continuing to rise."

    REPORT BY MICHAEL J. MANYAK, M.D., FN'92
    EXPEDITION ACTIVITIES
The flag expedition was divided into two distinctly different components. The first two weeks of the month-long expedition were primarily concerned with orientation of the medical team, determination of the correctness of the medical supplies for the problems encountered, testing of the communication network, and general oversight of the mechanisms required in case of an adverse medical event. The second two week period allowed more concentration on the scientific objectives of our team. Submersible dives began on July 29th with the first several dives dedicated to reconnaissance of the wreck site to determine the most suitable sites for artifact recovery. These dives also confirmed that no human remains were still present. This is hardly surprising since the environment is significantly more acidic and is under nearly 6000 lbs/in2 of pressure.
On August 11, the weather significantly worsened as Hurricane Alberto made its way toward the Great Banks. As the weather worsened, it became apparent that the Intervention with its rather flat hull was ill-equipped for the treacherous waters of the North Atlantic. The Magellan 750s were plagued by troubles from the start. One of the units could not be deployed and the second one was washed into the engine props causing extensive damage and precluding its use. With the ROVs useless and the seas becoming very turbulent to where the medical officer had serious concerns about safety, the decision was made to evacuate the artifacts and expedition personnel from the Intervention. That this was accomplished without injury is rather amazing and a tribute to the professionalism of the salvage crew and medical officer, Dr. Lanneau. Several people reported that the evacuation would not have been as successful without the participation of Dr. Lanneau.

M.D., '73 In the event of an underseas accident in our submersible, we were told, a small leak at the depth at which the Titanic lies would shoot a stream so intense it would cut a person in half. But don't worry, we were counseled. Before that could happen the capsule would implode with such force that our bodies would instantly incinerate before being crushed. Our fireproof jumpsuits were merely to allow identification of our charred remains. Two summers ago I was asked to provide medical services for a salvage expedition to the wreck site of the RMS Titanic in the North Atlantic. In return I would receive a two-week ringside seat at the salvage operation, with the potential to visit the

Titanic sank to the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Titanic has been the subject of countless books, songs, Web sites and movies, so you are probably already familiar with the story. The huge ship, promoted as "unsinkable," scraped against an iceberg late on the night of April 14, 1912. As the ship began to sink, passengers rushed to the upper decks. Unfortunately, while there were enough flotation belts for everyone on board, Titanic didn't have enough lifeboats for all the passengers and many of the ship's lifeboats were deployed with room to spare. Early on the morning of April 15, 1912 about three hours after hitting the iceberg Titanic went under. Of the roughly 2,200 people aboard, about 1,500 were killed that night mostly from hypothermia or drowning in the icy water. The sinking of Titanic continues to grip the public imagination more than any other shipwreck, even though there have been several deadlier maritime disasters. Part of the lasting allure of the Titanic tragedy is its symbolism: a proud achievement, representative of man's ingenuity and believed to be infallible, is destroyed in a moment. (The tragedy found its way thus into a

Web posted at: 12:37 p.m. EDT (1237 GMT) DENVER (CNN) It's one of those tourist attractions that seems out of place. In the Rocky Mountain West 2,000 miles from the Atlantic Ocean stands a monument to one of the greatest disasters at sea: the sinking of the Titanic. But the historic mansion and museum in downtown Denver have some strong ties to the White Star Line's "unsinkable" luxury ship. At one time, the Molly Brown House Museum was the fashionable home of one of the sunken ship's most famous survivors. Molly Brown represents sort of the American dream," said Leigh Grinstead, the museum's director. "She was a fairly poor working class girl who came and married well. He struck it rich." In the late 1800s, the Browns made their fortune from gold discovered high in the Colorado mountains. In 1894, the family settled in Denver. Molly Brown lived on and off in the Victorian mansion until her death in 1932. The house was restored in the 1970s to look as it did when the Browns lived in it, and today, it is one of Denver's top tourist attractions.

Shipwreck Relics Exhibited in Boston Dateline: 07/27/98 Titanic mania, spawned by the success of the multi-Oscar-winning lavish movie production, has arrived in Boston, where Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition has found a temporary home at Boston's World Trade Center through November 1. The story of the Titanic 's fateful voyage has captured the imagination of millions for decades, touchingly and dramatically illustrating man's fallibility and the triumphs and tragedies of human nature. Unlike the acclaimed movie's fictional portrayal, RMS Titanic, Inc.'s Boston exhibit captures the experience in yet another, incomparable way, presenting the relics recovered from the Titanic 's underwater resting place.
