February 2002 Barrister Newsletter Index:
By Hon. J. Michael Wachs There are several issues that I would like to address in this Barrister column. The first deals with proposed revisions in both the Rules of Professional Conduct and the Maryland Rules of Procedure as they relate to lawyers offering, or being encouraged to offer, pro bono legal services, and the mandatory reporting of same to the Administrative Office of the Courts. As you may recall, this topic was initially discussed in a Barrister column written by my predecessor, the Hon. Nancy Davis-Loomis, approximately one year ago. Also included in that December 2000 Barrister Since those articles were written, a lot has occurred, and to the chagrin of many, the issue continues to be debated by the Court of Appeals. The most recent draft proposal, dated Nov. 27, 2001, is scheduled for further debate on Feb. 4, 2002. The following is a general synopsis of what has now grown into proposed Rule 6.1:
1. A 50-hour aspirational annual target for pro bono service by all lawyers. 2. A statement that pro bono professional responsibility is not mandatory.

THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY The University Library provides information services to students, faculty, staff and patrons throughout the city and region. Library faculty and staff assist patrons in learning how to find and utilize books, periodicals, internet sources, audio-visual materials, and government documents through instruction for individuals, small groups or formal classes. Staff also prepare subject bibliographies for classes and arrange inter-library loans. Approximately 200,000 volumes are available, as well as more than 1,500 periodical titles. The University Library is a designated selective depository for U.S. Government documents. Special collections include the papers of Vincent Massari, former state senator; the Alva Adams family papers; Tobie Hopkins Black Literature; the Ralph Taylor Southwest collection, and the Edward O’Brien Western collection. UNIVERSITY STUDIES The University studies Program offers students opportunities to take courses in areas generally not available through the university’s departmental structures. These include such interdisciplinary programs as the President’s Leadership Program and the Honors Program as well as individual courses that will contribute to the student’s university education but are not available through other departments or programs.

Theme-related Ideas
Reading Reflects a Lifetime Autobiographies Writing autobiographies is a long-term project that can begin during Nevada Reading Week and continue to the end of the school year. Some possible chapters could include: birth and early childhood events, places I’ve lived, school experiences, family and friends, favorite things, successes and failures, plans/expectations, and reflections on the past and hopes for the future. Cynthia Rylant’s picture book, When I Was Young In the Mountains , provides a fine autobiographical model. Autobiographical poetry: Title (Your Name) I am (two special characteristics you have - use adjectives) I wonder about (something you are actually curious about) I hear (a sound, real or imaginary) I see (an imaginary sight) I want to (an actual desire) I am (the first line of the poem repeated). Sometimes I pretend (something you sometime pretend to do or be) I feel (a feeling about something imaginary) I touch (an imaginary touch) I worry about (something that really bothers you) I cry when (something that makes you very sad) I am (the first line of the poem repeated) I understand (something that you know is true) I say (something you really believe in) I dream (something you actually dream about or wish for) I try (something that you really make an effort to do) I hope (something that you actually hope for) I am (the first line of the poem repeated).
