Comparing gay travel packages S Thailand does have a gay culture, but much of it has been created by westerners. As a visitor, looking for nightlife, for gay sex, or for gay friends, this is largely the culture you'll most readily find. Here you'll meet outgoing and friendly Asian men who are interested in meeting westerners. This can give the impression that most Thai men who we'd think of as gay are looking for westerners. That's not the case. But those you meet will often be interested in meeting Americans. Thai culture does not place a premium on youth in the way that western societies do. If you're over 35, you probably feel over the hill in the U.S. You can still be quite desirable in Thailand. This comes as a pleasant surprise to middle-aged and older gay Americans!

Thailand
Culture
Monarchy and religion are the two sacred cows in Thailand. Thais are tolerant of most behaviour, as long as it doesn't insult one of these. Buddhism is thedominant religion, and orange-robed monks and gold, marble and stone Buddhas are common sights. The prevalent form of Buddhism practised is the Theravada school, which emphasises the potential of the individual to attain nirvana without the aid of saints or gurus. Make sure you are suitably dressed when visiting a temple - no shorts or singlets. Thai is a complicated language with its own unique alphabet, but it's fun to try at least a few words. The main complication with Thai is that it is tonal: the same word could be pronounced with a rising, falling, high, low or level tone and could theoretically have five meanings! Thai art, principally sculpture and architecture, is divided into a number of historical styles beginning with Mon (6th-13thC), Khmer (7th-13th C), Peninsular (until 14th C), Lan Na (13th-14th C), Sukhothai (13th-15th C), Lopburi (10th-13th C), Suphanburi-Sangkhlaburi (13th-15th C), Ayuthaya A (1350-1488), Ayuthaya B (1488-1630), Ayuthaya C (1630-1767) and Ratanakosin (19th C to present). Classical Thai music and theatrical dance are also popular artistic forms. Thai cuisine is pungent and spicy, seasoned with heaps of garlic and chillies and a characteristic mix of lime juice, lemon grass and fresh coriander. Galanga root, basil, ground peanuts, tamarind juice, ginger and coconut milk are other common additions. Fish sauce or shrimp paste are mainstays of Thai dishes, and of course rice is eaten with most meals. Main dishes include hot and sour fish ragout, green and red curries, various soups and noodle dishes. Thai food is served with a variety of condiments and dipping sauces. Snacks and appetisers include fried peanuts, chicken, chopped ginger, peppers and slices of lime. There is an incredible variety of fruit available, either fresh or juiced. Sugar-cane juice and, for something stronger, rice whisky are favourite local tipples.

An Introduction to Buddhism
by His Holiness Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara
Supreme Patriarch of Thailand Buddhism is not something alien to people born in Thailand because they are all familiar with Buddhist monasteries (Wats), monks, novices and religious activities from their childhood. However, the familiar pictures that they have seen so far are only the superficial form of Buddhism. Sometimes other cults and beliefs have been syncretised into Buddhism, becoming part of the tradition. Traditions are observed on the basis that they have been observed by previous generations without any investigation of the essences and reasons behind them. When foreigners witness Buddhism in Thailand they might feel it to be quite strange. Accordingly, they reach various opinions on Buddhism. But what they see may be mostly the superficialities of Buddhism with the syncretism of local beliefs and traditions. Thinking this to be Buddhism, they may end up speaking and writing about Buddhism in different ways, each having their own understanding and interpretations of Buddhism which are not homogeneous. Accordingly, this may cause others to understand Buddhism wrongly. Buddhism has been established for a long time, more than 2,544 years as it is counted in Thailand, and it has developed into various schisms. However, there are two main schisms in Buddhism:

Thailand is a country of scenic diversity and ancient traditions, of tranquil temples and modern urban excitement. With and independent history going back more than seven centuries, it has managed to absorb a variety of cultural influences and blend them into something uniquely and memorably Thai.
CENTRAL REGION
The fertile Central Plains region, watered by the winding Chao Phraya River, has long been Thailand's cultural and economic heart. "Kin khao", the Thai expression for "to eat", translates literally as "to eat rice" ; and the vast checkerboard of paddy fields on either side of the river has traditionally provided the kingdom with its staple grain. When the annual monsoon rains sweep across the plains, the fields are transformed into a sea of vivid green dotted here and there with farming villages and the occasional gleaming spire of a Buddhist temple.

THE NORTH
Until the early years of the present century, northern Thailand was effectively isolated from the rest of the country, a region of wild, densely forested mountains where elephants worked in the teak industry along the Burmese and Laotian borders and old temple-filled town like Chiang Mai, founded in 1297, that were part of the ancient Lanna Thai Kingdom. The first railway linking Chiang Mai with Bangkok only opened in 1921, and good roads did not come until several decades later. This long isolation helps explain many of the characteristics that make the north so appealing to visitors today : a sense of traditions not merely preserved but vitally alive, gentle customs that reveal themselves in countless ways, distinctive differences of scenery, architecture, language and food. Tourists can explore the charms of Chiang Mai, where life moves at a different pace from Bangkok, ornate temples rise on almost every street, and the shops are filled with handicrafts native to the region and still made by traditional methods handed down over generations. There are woodcarvers who produce and endless variety of decorative figures, panels, and furniture, as well as other artisans who create fine lacquer bowls, silverware, homespun cotton and silk, delicate embroidery, and hand-painted umbrellas. All these crafts, along with many others, can be found at the famous Night Bazaar in the center of town.

Thailand Culture
Over the centuries Thailand's culture has left its mark on the landscape Thousands of Buddhist temples, the ancient ruins of Isaan (Thailand's Northeast) and the magnificent temples and palaces of Sukhothai and Ayuthaya tell of an ancient culture that continues to enchant visitors even today. A proudly independent nation, the Kingdom comprises cultures as diverse as the hill tribes, sea gypsies, and rural communities living in harmony with modern day mobile phone owning city dwellers. In any other country it may be a surprise that such diversity can co-love for the monarchy unite them and transform their diversity into strength. Visitors will be enthralled by the sight of a Buddhist Temple under construction side-by-side with an elevated expressway. Thailand has a living culture, evolving before your eyes and embracing the ancient and timeless with the modern. In fact, there is a special word for this - "Sanuk". You will see it in the smiling faces of the people, in the myriad of local festivals and in the way in which Thai people always find an excuse to have a party. "Sanuk" - yet another good reason to make Thailand the Preferred Destination.

Language The Chilean variety of Spanish can be quite difficult to understand, as Chileans speak very quickly and fail to pronounce many consonants. Few people speak English (except in 3-star hotels and above), and other languages even less, though some German is spoken in the south.

Food and Drink
Media
The main newspapers are El Mercurio, La Epoca and La Tercera. Condor is published in German; News Review, in English. International television stations (such as CNN, HBO and so on) are transmitted by cable. For further information about Chilean media, please see our Links Page

Shopping
Shops open between 9 and 10 in the morning and close around 8 at night; the smaller ones are generally closed between 2 and 4 in the afternoon. Shopping centers and supermarkets are open later (until 9 or 10 at night) as well as during weekends. Alto Las Condes, considered the most modern shopping mall in South America, will make Europeans and North Americans feel right at home. At the other end of the spectrum, a visit to the Mercado central (central market) in Santiago or any other city is a worthwhile taste of popular culture. Also recommended is a visit to one of many open-air markets offering handicrafts and artworks in wood, wool, clay, mimbre (wicker), silver and lapis lazuli (a semi-precious blue stone found only in Chile and Afghanistan).

To complicate the picture further, northern Thailand is now the home to anumber of different peoples, each with their own culture and language.
    http://www.track-of-the-tiger.com/html/northern_culture.html
NORTHERN THAI CULTURE Northern Thailand is distinct in many ways from the rest of the country. Traditionally called “Lan-Na” it has for most of its history been a separate kingdom. Northern Thai is a very different language from the official Bangkok Thai heard elsewhere in the country and varies considerably within northern Thailand itself. To complicate the picture further, northern Thailand is now the home to a number of different peoples, each with their own culture and language. In the far north west, Shan or Tai Yai people predominate. The Shan are closely related to the Thais and extend over a range centred in northern Burma (where Shan State has long been fighting for independence). In addition, the nine or ten hill tribes of Northern Thailand maintain separate cultures and languages, despite gradual integration. This ethnic and cultural diversity is one of the reasons this area is so fascinating for the visitor. PO Box 3, Mae Ai

before A.D. (The people residing in the area which is now Thailand.) It is known to Thai people, that their ancestors have pursued and transferred the respect in the
