Iron deficiency is still common in toddlers, teenage girls, and women of child-bearing age.
    PRESS CONTACT:
Anne Looker, Ph.D. CDC, National Center for Health Statistics Iron status of toddlers, teenage girls and women of childbearing age remains less than ideal in the United States according to a national survey conducted by CDC in 1999-2000. Survey results revealed that iron deficiency anemia, the most severe form of iron deficiency, is uncommon. However, a milder degrees of iron deficiency continues to occur in 1 in 14 toddlers and 1 in 8 teenage girls or women of childbearing age. Minority women and teenage girls were more likely to have iron deficiency than non-Hispanic white females. Most of the negative effects of iron deficiency are caused by anemia, but iron deficiency without anemia has been linked to poorer cognitive development in both infants and adolescents.

    Improving Literacy Through School Libraries
    http://www.ed.gov/offices/OESE/LSL/

This new program is designed to improve the literacy skills and academic achievement of students by providing them with access to up-to-date school library materials; technologically advanced school library media centers; and professionally certified school library media specialists.
The Improving Literacy Through School Libraries (LSL) program promotes comprehensive local strategies to improve student achievement by improving school library services and resources. The LSL program is one component of the Department's commitment to dramatically improve student achievement by focusing available resources, including those of school library media centers, to ensure that no child is left behind. School library media centers have an important role to contribute to the success of local improvement plans especially in the literacy area by increasing collaboration between instructional and school library media center staff, providing additional instructional materials and resources, and extending hours of operation during non-school hours.
This program provides competitive one-year grants to districts in which 20 percent of the students are from families with incomes below the poverty line.

"A new library is like finding a $100 bill on the sidewalk." - Anonymous DECEMBER 2002 BY LAURIE DIAS-MITCHELL
White House Conference on School Libraries
June 4, 2002 was a historic day for school libraries! First Lady Laura Bush convened a conference on the importance of school libraries in children's education.
We are very fortunate in Dartmouth because we have full-time library media specialists in our middle and high schools. Hopefully, in the future, all elementary schools in the district will have vigorous and adequately staffed libraries as well.
Research shows there is a direct correlation between high quality school library media programs and student achievement. In fact, the highest achieving students come from schools with good library media centers. Dollars talk here. Spending for school library programs is the single most important variable related to better student achievement.
"School libraries help teachers teach and children learn," noted Mrs. Bush, a former public school teacher and librarian. "Children and teachers need library resources especially books and the expertise of a librarian to succeed. Books, information technology, and school librarians who are part of the schools' professional team are basic ingredients for student achievement," Mrs. Bush said. Democrat, Republican, Independent, Green, or Libertarian – none of these matter when it comes to agreeing that student achievement depends, in no small part, on robust school library media services.

TAASA Statement on Supreme Court's Sex Offender Registry Decisions Students Attend Conference on Sexual Harassment AUSTIN, Texas (June 21) - The Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA) is training high school students this week to carry out a curriculum to address sexual harassment in Texas schools. Students Taking Action for Respect The Students Taking Action for Respect (STAR) Program that TAASA has developed into one of the first of its kind in the nation. This program is especially unique because of the role students have been afforded to design the program. TAASA began by conducting focus groups with high school-aged students, whose feedback supported current research regarding how teens are influenced, as well as the research available regarding teens' attitudes about sexual assault. The teens in the focus groups reported that their peers have the greatest influence on them followed by their mothers and the media. As a result of this research, TAASA has initiated a peer-led program to address sexual harrassment in Texas schools. The program was piloted in 2001. TAASA is also collaborating with the sexual assault programs serving these counties, as well as the Texas Patent Teacher Association, Girl Scouts, the Texas School Safety Center, Men Against Violence at Southwest Texas State University, the Office of the Attorney General, Texas Youth Commission, and various legislators. One of our events that promotes the Students Taking Action for Respect program is our fourth annual " Green Ribbon Campaign" which is currently underway. One hundred and fifty schools participated this year, up from one hundred last year.

Banned Books Quest by Goehrig Orr Jonnie Wallis Introduction The recently elected Centerville School Board feels strongly about the need to protect its students from exposure and access to controversial materials. Therefore, the School Board is proposing to ban the following books from the school system:
Daddy's Roommate by Michael Willhoite Heather Has Two Mommies by Leslea Newman Understanding Sexual Identity by Janice Rench Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain.
This means removing these books from all of the Centerville School Media Centers, prohibiting their use in the curriculum, and prohibiting students and teachers from having the books on school property. The Centerville School Board will conduct a public hearing on this important issue at its next meeting. The Centerville High School Student Council has decided it will attend the hearing and respond to the School Board's proposal. The idea of banning books is not a new concept. For hundreds of years , people have sought to protect the community from controversial ideas by burning books. At the same time world leaders, like Winston Churchill,
