August 19, 2002 Graduate student earns $70,000 Ford fellowship By Ann M. Gibb In just one generation, Marianne Bueno's family has gone from farm labor in the fields of California to graduate studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Marianne Bueno. Photo: Ann M. Gibb Now Bueno, who is studying for a Ph.D. in history at UC Santa Cruz, has added another accomplishment to the family's achievement by earning a $70,000 Ford Foundation Fellowship for Minority Students.
The fellowship covers tuition, fees, and health insurance for three years, and provides a stipend for living expenses, research, and travel to conferences.
Bueno's mother visited Santa Cruz for the second time last June, when she came to watch her daughter receive a master's degree in history. Her first visit was about 30 years ago, when she took a day off from her job as a migrant farmworker to see the Boardwalk.
Bueno has a message for women of color seeking higher education: "Apply, apply, apply. Apply to graduate school, apply for funding."

The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) is the largest and oldest source of commissioned officers for the Air Force. Air Force ROTC's headquarters is at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. The Air Force ROTC Program is designed to recruit, educate and commission officer candidates through college campus programs based on Air Force requirements. As of January 1997, units are located at 144 college and university campuses throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. Students from schools near Air Force ROTC host institutions can attend classes through more than 699 separate cross-town enrollment programs or consortium agreements.
HISTORY After World War II, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, chief of staff of the War Department, signed General Order No. 124, establishing Air ROTC units at 78 colleges and universities throughout the nation. A new two-year Senior Program, scholarships and a Junior Program were authorized by the ROTC Vitalization Act of 1964. In 1978, Air Training Command, with headquarters at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, assumed responsibility for Air Force ROTC programs. On July 1, 1993, Air Training Command merged with Air University to form Air Education and Training Command. Air University became a direct reporting unit under Air Education and Training Command and Air Force ROTC realigned under Air University.

Military Brat Life
My First Move
by Diane (Morency) Russell My father died when I was five years old. Two years later my mother married my step-father who was in the Army. I had some health problems and the doctor said that a warm dry climate would help my problem. A short time after that my dad got orders for Ft. Bliss, Texas. I was told that we would be moving to Texas. I had four brothers that where older then me and they where either in the Army, Navy or married. My youngest brother who was fifteen at the time would be going too (but he didn't last to long, and was so home sick that my mother sent him home to live with my brother until he joined the Navy). I wasn't too thrilled about leaving my friends, my home and my toys. I had roller skates and was told that I could't take them as they had wooden sidewalks and dirt roads in Texas. The dirt roads where true, but they did not have sidewalks, wooden or cement. We lived in El Paso below the mountains. I had to leave some of my dolls and pogo stick and when we went home they had disappeared. On the day that we left New Jersy by train it was one of the worse snow storms we have had. I was excited because I never traveled by train before and we were going to go to California first to visit my dad's mother and siblings. The train trip was about a four or five day journey and when we reached California it was about eighty degrees and there we where in winter coats and I guess everyone thought we where nuts. After a few days there we where on our way to Texas. My dad's brother and his wife met us at the bus station. He was also in the army and stationed there at Ft. Bliss also.On our way to their home all I can remember is desert, cactus, dirt roads.big mountains and warm weather in January. All I know is that I didn't want to be there and wanted to take the next train back to New Jersey, where my family, friends and skates where.

Air Force News Archive More AF News DOD reaches out to military children in public schools by Staff Sgt. Kathleen T. Rhem, USA
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON (AFPN) The Department of Defense's new Educational Opportunities Directorate hopes to provide for "quality education" of all 870,000 children in the military family not just the 110,000 who attend DOD schools. "Our concern was that at any given time, we really weren't reaching all of our children," said Victor Vasquez, deputy assistant secretary of defense for military community and family policy. "Overall, we do very well for the children that are in our system, but we don't have them there all the time." Vasquez stressed civilian schools do provide a quality education, but added "military children have other issues that they bring to the table." He said the purpose of the new directorate is to "facilitate, advocate and support" open communications between DOD and local school systems. "What I see taking place down the road is a sharing and cross-fertilization of best practices." In September, more than 100 state and local education experts, teachers, military parents and students, and DOD officials attended a regional roundtable in San Antonio. Officials have scheduled a series of six more regional roundtable discussions over the next two years.
