Writing Benchmarks Initiative Writing Benchmark Assessment #2: December 7! Beginning with the 2001-2002 school year, Johnson County Schools will begin implementation of a writing benchmarks assessment program with the long-range goals of increasing students' writing proficiency and providing more and varied opportunities for students to write. After an initial period of development and planning of scoring rubrics, teachers will begin assessing students in writing near the end of each nine-weeks term in grades K-8 and every 4.5 weeks in grades 9-12 (due to block scheduling). A planning committee of teachers from grades K-12 will guide the program's evolvement with the ultimate goal of preparing students for the state's writing assessment in grades 4, 7, and 11. Other writing initiatives include a "writing across the curriculum" workshop for grades 7-12 and an increased emphasis on student writing system-wide.

Thursday, January 18, 2001 Printer friendly version Thanks to grants from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, UT researchers will have a chance to share their expertise with educators and students in Tennessee public schools. THEC awarded three separate research teams the Eisenhower Professional Development Grant to improve K-12 learning in mathematics, science and reading. The federal grants are disbursed through a competitive state-run selection process and will provide the much-needed funding for teacher information sessions and in-classroom projects to be given throughout the state. One such program is Jerome Grant and Paris Lambdin's Insects in the Classroom workshop, which shows rural elementary and junior high science teachers how to use insects in teaching agriculture and interactive biology. Lambdin says the $29,959 given to the program will go towards providing travel and take-home materials for visiting instructors. The overall goal is to transfer information to rural counties that wouldn't otherwise have it at their disposal. That would be impossible without the Eisenhower Grant, Lambdin says.

Information on State Budget
Most of "new revenue" consumed by old "debts" Members can contact their TEA/NEA UniServ Coordinator for additional information; click on About TEA/Staff Directory.
The total increased revenue in the new state budget is $1,084,702,000. The revenue shortfall and recurring deficit from 2001-2002 consumed $628,998,100 of that new revenue. The budget contains a 3.0% salary increase for state employees and a 2.0% increase for K-12 and higher educationbeginning in January 2003. K-12 items listed under "funded improvements" are: Basic Education Program (BEP), $45,553,000 ($16,000,000 of that amount resulted from medical insurance premium increases); $7,900,000 for additional BEP requirements; and $227,800 for training and experience steps for state special schools. Under "restoration of grants" K-12 items are: Science Alliance, $750,000; Public TV, $3,223,600; K-12 School Safety, $5,600,00; Governor's School, $1,500,000; K-12 Performance Incentive, $500,000; Extended Contract (restore 10 %), $2,800,000; and Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA), $150,000. Tennesseans pay the least in state and local taxes - and spend less than all but two states A new report from NEA Research shows once more that Tennesseans are not overburdened with taxes. In fact, says TEA Manager of Research Graham Greeson, “What we have is an investment problem. The amazing thing," Greeson noted, “is that despite our miserable level of spending on our schools, our students consistently rank at or near the national average on all the standardized tests. Our teachers and schools are giving us far more than we’re paying for in results.” To read the full report click here

Background
Tennessee law already allows students to attend public schools outside their district, but there are bureaucratic restrictions. For example, transferring students must obtain permission from the receiving district's school board to ensure that the transfer does not harm state desegregation efforts. A provision in state law allows the local boards of education to conduct choice programs as part of the state's Basic Education funding reform package passed in 1992.

Assessing the Impact of Technology on Teaching and Learning: Student Perspectives In spring 1998, a study was conducted with Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) faculty on their perceptions about technology in the classroom, their usage of various types of technology, the effects of various technologies on good teaching practices, and their projected use of instructional technology in the near future. In the second phase of our research, a study was conducted with MTSU students. The study addressed student perceptions about technology in the classroom, the value of various types of technology in their learning and research experiences, and the effects of the different types of technologies on their relationship with the instructor and other students, the outcome of the course, and their understanding of the course material. Results of both studies will be shared with participants, with the emphasis on the student study.

State and Local Foreign Language Standards
We note and caution that not all of these were designed for the same purpose. They are named "curriculum frameworks", "content and learning standards", among others. Not all are of the same vintage. Investigation will bear out that the organizing committees are not composed in like fashion, nor are they given identical charges, and closeness to the national standards ranges widely. The following four documents may help to detail some of our general notions about national standards:
I have begun to add local documents to the mix. They do bear witness of continuous activity in the foreign-language standards mouvement. In almost every instance, titles are drawn from the web pages themselves without change. I strongly encourage researchers to look at the following sites:

It's particularly targeted at web site developers interested in having their pages positioned better in the engines, and explains both policy and technical issues regarding how the various engines place a page in the retrieval display.
