172 pages. This handbook for parents describes five levels of aggressive behavior and explains how to recognize if a child reacts to feelings of frustration with acts of aggression or initiates aggressive acts to get what he or she desires. Parents learn how to use Crisis Teaching to calm themselves, teach children self-control, and deliver consequences that discourage negative behaviors. In addition, techniques for teaching children to problem solve without resorting to tantrums or violence are outlined. Finally, suggestions for parents on how to build stronger, loving relationships or repair damaged ones with their children are offered.

    Tennessee
    Team Report
How Tennessee is implementing the research findings in the National Research Council Report, "Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children."
    • Tennessee’s revised language arts framework and accompanying staff development emphasize language and literacy growth consistent with the research findings. A statewide initiative, Tennessee: Come Read with Me , will assist by providing materials and resources for support of reading. The Comprehensive School Reform Demonstration program will provide funding and support of national reading models for qualifying schools. Beginning with the spring of 1999, the Department of Education will collect data from each system in support of the diagnostic evaluation of student progress in reading for grades one and two.
    A Tennessee Success Story
The Governor’s Study Partner Program, established in 1988, successfully matches successful students with those who may be struggling. A new focus initiated in 1997-98 focuses on identifying fifth through eighth grade students who are trained as "partners" for first and second-grade students. Extensive training focuses on relationship-building with reading as the primary partner activity. The University of Tennessee evaluated the 1997-98 program with a 96% success rate. Expansion of the program includes the addition of summer sites and over 160 new schools added for 1998-99. This program successfully complies with the recommendation to provide well-trained and supervised "volunteers" to expand children’s opportunities for reading and for motivational support.
