The course of study for the BSEE Degree is structured to provide a foundation in both the basic sciences and the specialized areas of electrical engineering. The program also has sufficient non-technical content to enhance the cultural growth of the students and to develop professionals with a strong social awareness. The general content of the curriculum is set by the policies of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). ABET monitors electrical engineering programs for compliance with standards deemed to be necessary for the well being of society and the practice of engineering. Much of what you read here regarding the curriculum has been developed to conform to ABET standards and must be closely followed in order to preserve our accredited status. Showcase Curriculum
All courses required for the BSEE Degree are listed in the current UTK Undergraduate Catalog. The Showcase Curriculum shows these courses arranged in a way by which a student can, by carrying a course load sometimes as high as 18 hours per semester can graduate in four years (8 semesters). Such an achievement requires dedication and full-time serious effort and many students take less than a full load for a variety of reasons. The arrangement of courses shown in the Showcase Curriculum has been carefully thought out to provide the most effective learning experience for the student. You would be well-advised to follow this sequence as closely as circumstances permit. At the very least you should observe all prerequisite and co-requisite requirements. Significant deviations from the Showcase Curriculum should be discussed fully, in advance, with your advisor.

    Philosophy of General Education
The purpose of the Tennessee Board of Regents’ general education core is to ensure that college students have the broad knowledge and skills to become life-long learners in a global community that will continue to change. Because courses in general education should emphasize breadth, they should not be reduced in design to the skills, techniques, or procedures associated with a specific occupation or profession. As a core of the baccalaureate degree, essential for a full completion of all majors and minors, general education is included in lower division courses but may be incorporated at the upper division as well. General education provides critical thinking skills for analysis to continue to seek truths, to discover answers to questions, and to solve problems. Specifically, educated people practice and are literate in the various methods of communication. They recognize their place in the history, culture, and diverse heritages of Tennessee, the United States, and the world. They appreciate the web of commonality of all humans in a multicultural world and are prepared for the responsibilities of an engaged citizenship. They recognize the ethical demands of our common lives. They demonstrate the skills and knowledge of the social and behavioral sciences to analyze their contemporary world. They are familiar with the history and aesthetics of the fine arts. They understand and practice the scientific and mathematical view of the world.

The founders planned that the General Education Program would help students build upon what was learned in high school, should challenge the students and thereby enrich them, and introduce them to new areas of knowledge and new ways of looking at old subjects. The University General Education Program promotes a shared core learning experience for all undergraduate students at The University of Memphis and provides a framework upon which the college major can build.
