What is BIOAg? The need for a more sustainable agriculture will require greater reliance on biological processes that are renewable, non-polluting, and provide multiple benefits to farmers and society.  At Washington State University we are using the term Biologically Intensive Agriculture (BIOAg) to describe these sustainable agricultural systems.  Organic farming is the most well developed example of this concept. Initiative for Biologically Intensive and Organic Agriculture in Washington State As the Land Grant Institution in Washington State, Washington State University (WSU) is striving to meet the growing needs for information about sustainable agricultural systems.  As part of the mission, the CSANR is developing a comprehensive research and education program on biologically intensive and organic agriculture.

ISU Wakonse Fellows Wakonse is a word from the Lakota Indian language that means "to teach ... to inspire." The Wakonse Foundation (http://www.wakonse.org/) , in Columbia, Missouri, brings together people who find that inspiring and helping others to learn is what drew them into higher education. The foundation runs an annual Conference on College Teaching at which colleagues learn about themselves as teachers, explore new methods of teaching, and join a growing network of dedicated professionals who can share resources and offer mutual support. Iowa State University sends a team of new Wakonse Fellows to the Conference on College Teaching each year, joining approximately 100 faculty members from other colleges and universities across the midwest. Wakonse Fellows are identified not only as exemplary teachers, but also as ones who inspire other faculty to enrich their own teaching. They are, in a word, models for the community of teacher/scholars.

This guide and its supplement continue to be recognized as valuable resources for teachers who want to learn more about sustainable agriculture and teach their students key concepts, thinking skills, and hands-on skills.
    Toward a Sustainable Agriculture: A Teacher's Guide
This 152-page guide includes six teacher reference guide sections outlining the scope of sustainable agriculture, an instructional unit summarizing key concepts, and 21 learning activities. It was prepared by a task force of farmers, researchers, activists, extension staff, continuing and vocational education specialists, agriculture educators, and others. The first draft was field tested and reviewed by more than 100 Wisconsin agriculture education instructors.
    Reference guide sections are:
    • Introduction to sustainable agriculture Sustainable cropping and livestock systems The economics of sustainable agriculture Alternative agricultural enterprises: new ways to sustainability Public policy issues in sustainable agriculture Ethics and agriculture: can agriculture be good?

Title: Re: [cg] teaching resources Jen,
You might try contacting the local county agent. The extension service will probably have people who deal with food and nutrition programs, and even sustainable agriculture. There are also the Master Gardeners who might be helpful. The extension service has progressed far beyond the Hank Kinble of Green Acres. You might also find out if there is a horticultural therapist in your area.
    Good luck,

Dr. Robert Hill, associate professor in the Department of Natural Resource Sciences and Landscape Architecture (NRSLA), has received the 1999 Outstanding Teaching Award from the Northeast Branch of the American Society of Agronomy (NEB-ASA). Hill was nominated by his peers in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and chosen from a pool of outstanding candidates by a NEB-ASA committee of faculty from various universities. "Dr. Hill's easygoing manner, his attention to detail, and his strong desire for students to learn make him an excellent teacher," says Dr. Richard Weismiller, chair of the Department of Natural Resource Sciences and Landscape Architecture. "We're pleased that he has been recognized for his outstanding work."
