Many children with FAS/FAE require special education services due to significant learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral difficulties or multiple handicapping conditions. The child's parent and school district need to work as partners in developing the most appropriate placement situation for the child. Although there are many similarities among alcohol exposed children, each child is uniquely different and needs to be assessed on an individual basis. Here are some general guidelines when planning a classroom or program for FAS/FAE children. Individual assessments in Speech/Language, Occupational Therapy, and cognitive functioning are necessary in establishing a child's strengths and deficits. Other evaluations which may be helpful are: Psychiatric, neurological and physical therapy. The child's educational plan should be developed based on the child's individual needs.

Active Learning: Bridging the Gap for Fetal Alcohol Effect Children By Debbie Evensen Fall 1991 Professionals and the public in Alaska are deeply concerned about the educational implication of prenatally alcohol/drug exposed children. At a recent community support group for teachers and other professionals working with children with Fetal Alcohol/Drug Effects, the frustration level was obvious. Teachers shared feelings of being overwhelmed, not only with the sheer numbers of these students entering their classrooms, but also with the ineffectiveness of traditional techniques in teaching these children. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is the leading cause of birth defects in the United States today. The students with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAS/FAE) demonstrate a wide variety of deficits, depending on the period of fetal brain development when the alcohol or drugs were ingested. A review of the literature shows that only the most severely affected children are discussed, while the other 80%, many undiagnosed, are at-risk for developing significant school problems. The need for long-term planning is obvious. Children exposed to alcohol in utero do not represent a particular socioeconomic class of children though, and may be as varied as children who are not so exposed. However, there are many commonalties among FAS/FAE children and the following generalizations can be made.

The surprising findings by Emory University researchers offer parents, teachers and doctors guidance on developing new teaching methods and drug treatments for children with FAS. Those now used may be the opposite of what children with FAS need, the study suggests. The new work, published in the February issue of Alcoholism, examined how children with FAS learn compared with children with attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder. FAS affects children whose mothers drank heavily during pregnancy. Children with FAS have behavioral and learning problems in addition to brain damage and facial abnormalities. Researchers had long thought that at children with FAS also have ADHD and should be given similar treatment, such as Ritalin. The Emory team expected the new study to confirm that notion. But instead, it uncovered major differences in how children with FAS learn from those children with ADHD, according to the lead researcher, psychologist Claire Coles, Ph.D., an associate professor at Emory.

Story Ideas Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Research Innovative educational strategies for teaching children with alcohol-related birth defects continue to be developed at UAF under the direction of psychology Professor Judith Kleinfeld. These strategies have shown that educating children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is effective. Many are doing well at school and home. Some have even entered college. Strategies for treating FAS kids are outlined in the book "Fantastic Antone Succeeds! Experiences in Educating Children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome," published by the University of Alaska Press and edited by Judith Kleinfeld along with Siobhan Wescott.
