Andy Warhol's work in many disciplines uniquely situates the museum to explore interdisciplinary connections and the nature of the creative process through the template of a single artist's work. This meets the interests of a cultural and educational climate drawn increasingly to interdisciplinary focuses and addresses the needs of school curriculums striving to emphasize cross-curricular lesson planning. Teacher programs include an annual teacher open house in the fall, teacher inservices, and teacher advisory team. Participants in all programs are eligible to receive Pennsylvania Act 48 credit.
Teacher In-Services
In-services are available for K-12 teachers of all disciplines. In-services take place either at the Museum or at your school. Full or half-day in-services are available. In-services feature: hands-on activities and ready-to-use lesson plans, creative and new ways to strengthen art curriculum, cross-curriculum connections and resource materials. Cost vary depending on the needs of the school, call 412.237.8356 for more information. Teacher Open House
Once a year in October, The Warhol presents a Teacher Open House highlighting new exhibitions and featuring special gallery talks and lectures. The evening's events also include a reception, overview of education programs, art-making and discussion activities, and cross-disciplinary lesson plans and curriculum ideas.

Resources:
Middle School Advisory
The advisory period ideally, a time when teachers and students examine "real-life" issues is the linchpin in the middle-school movement, some experts say. Many middle-school programs suffer from poorly implemented advisories, however. These articles can help schools examine the advisory concept and the quality of their own programs.
Revitalizing Advisories
Howard Johnston, a professor at the University of South Florida and a respected middle grades researcher, shares his ideas about revitalizing middle school advisory program "that segment of the middle level school agenda that has met with only limited acceptance and success." If we look at why they've failed, Johnson says, we can make them better.
- Education consultant Jim Burns is a leading advocate for middle school advisory as a component critical to high performance middle level schools. Burns is critical of what he describes as "low-expectation advisory programs."
Five Attributes of Satisfying Advisories
Advisory programs in far too many middle schools are failing to satisfy either students or their adult advisors, says consultant Jim Burns. He describes several characteristics that he believes are essential to good advisory programs. And see this bibliography of other Burns articles about advisory.

64. Illinois Energy Education Development Program
ILEED programs are developed and updated by input from a teacher advisory Board madeup of Illinois teachers, former ILEED students and business professionals.
http://www.ileed.org/
The Illinois Energy Education Development (ILEED) program is an energy and environmental education program for children in grades kindergarten through 12 which incorporates all disciplines and learning styles and promotes leadership and organizational skills. More than 2,800 members actively work on student-developed energy and environmental projects that benefit the students, their schools and communities. ILEED programs are developed and updated by input from a Teacher Advisory Board made up of Illinois teachers, former ILEED students and business professionals. A Student Advisory Board helps ILEED focus on programs and activities that are fun for students, and provide leadership development. Over the past year, ILEED provided:
  • Leadership and energy education training for over 1,200 students and teachers through statewide workshops
  • Two one-week energy/environmental camps for students in fifth through eighth grades
  • Ten scholarships to NEED's National Energy Conference for Educators hosted in July of each year. For more information about the 2002 conferences, contact Mary Spruill at mspruill@need.org

During the 2000-2001 school year, schools reported noticeable improvements achieved by participating kindergarten through fourth grade students in reading levels, comprehension, fluency, and attitude toward reading. Ohio's kindergartners showed the largest gains in improvement in reading levels-better preparing them for first grade and future success in reading. Schools also reported that 89-92 percent of students are reading more books as a result of the OhioReads program. Since Governor Taft took office, the state has authorized $1.4 billion for school construction. The state now spends more than $2 million every day to ensure that students go to class in a safe, secure school conducive to learning.
