The Twelfth President Of The United States
Zachary Taylor
Term: 1849 - 1850
First Lady: Margaret Mackall Smith Taylor
Vice President: Millard Fillmore
Millard Fillmore
(1800-1874), 13th President Of The United States. A power in New York state politics, he was the successful Whig candidate for Vice President in 1848 and became president on the death of Zachary Taylor in 1850. As chief executive he showed a lack of leadership, and he failed to secure the Whig presidential nomination in 1852. Then, running on the Know-Nothing ticket in 1856, he was roundly defeated.
Fillmore's political predilections lay with the National Republican party, but before 1826 he took little interest in politics. That year the Anti-Masonic excitement occasioned by the abduction of William Morgan, a Mason known to be publishing an exposé of the order, swept over western New York, and Fillmore, along with many National Republicans in that region, joined the Anti-Masonic movement. As a rising Anti-Masonic politician he became closely associated with the party's principal leaders, Thurlow Weed, William H. Seward, Francis Granger, and Albert Haller Tracy. In 1828, Fillmore went to Albany as an Anti-Masonic member of the state assembly, where he served three terms. He took a prominent part in securing the abolition of imprisonment for debt in the state.
Elected to Congress as a Whig in 1836, Fillmore held office for three consecutive terms, declining renomination in 1842. He was a thorough-paced protectionist and, as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee (1840-1842), he marshaled the Whig tariff of 1842 through the House Of Representatives.

Old Rough and Ready You may remember that in the popular movie Chariots of Fire Olympic contender Eric Liddell refused to run on Sunday because of his religious convictions. Something like that happened with a United States president, too. Zachary Taylor, an Episcopalian, refused to take the presidential oath of office on a Sunday. This led to a curious situation in which the United States was "without" a president for a day.

    Inaugural Address of Zachary Taylor
MONDAY, MARCH 5, 1849 Elected by the American people to the highest office known to our laws, I appear here to take the oath prescribed by the Constitution , and, in compliance with a time-honored custom, to address those who are now assembled. In the discharge of these duties my guide will be the Constitution , which I this day swear to "preserve, protect, and defend." For the interpretation of that instrument I shall look to the decisions of the judicial tribunals established by its authority and to the practice of the Government under the earlier Presidents, who had so large a share in its formation. To the example of those illustrious patriots I shall always defer with reverence, and especially to his example who was by so many titles "the Father of his Country." To command the Army and Navy of the United States; with the advice and consent of the Senate, to make treaties and to appoint ambassadors and other officers; to give to Congress information of the state of the Union and recommend such measures as he shall judge to be necessary; and to take care that the laws shall be faithfully executedthese are the most important functions intrusted to the President by the Constitution, and it may be expected that I shall briefly indicate the principles which will control me in their execution. Chosen by the body of the people under the assurance that my Administration would be devoted to the welfare of the whole country, and not to the support of any particular section or merely local interest, I this day renew the declarations I have heretofore made and proclaim my fixed determination to maintain to the extent of my ability the Government in its original purity and to adopt as the basis of my public policy those great republican doctrines which constitute the strength of our national existence.

Interesting Fact: Zachary Taylor spent July 4, 1850, eating cherries and milk at a ceremony at the Washington Monument. He got sick from the heat and died five days later, the second president to die in office. Fast Fact: With Zachary Taylor, a career soldier first attained the Presidency. Biography: Northerners and Southerners disputed sharply whether the territories wrested from Mexico should be opened to slavery, and some Southerners even threatened secession. Standing firm, Zachary Taylor was prepared to hold the Union together by armed force rather than by compromise. Born in Virginia in 1784, he was taken as an infant to Kentucky and raised on a plantation. He was a career officer in the Army, but his talk was most often of cotton raising. His home was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and he owned a plantation in Mississippi. But Taylor did not defend slavery or southern sectionalism; 40 years in the Army made him a strong nationalist.

Message to Congress, 1849. A military hero of the Mexican War, Zachary Taylor never really wanted to be President. Forty years of soldiering had left him with a great love of his country but little political skill. Nonetheless, his election was assured for his bravery was legend and had captured American hearts. During his Administration, President Taylor actively urged California and New Mexico - which were certain to be free states - to apply for statehood. He also warned Southerners if they seceded, he would personally lead the Army to preserve the Union. When the Compromise of 1850 was introduced, the President stood ready to veto it. He never got the chance for on July 9, 1850, an acute attack of gastroenteritis killed him. Standard Number:

Taylor, Zachary Mexican War he defeated the Mexicans at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma , drove them across the Rio Grande, and took Matamoros. Later he forced the surrender of the Mexican stronghold at Monterrey. In 1847 he won the decisive battle of Buena Vista in the face of great odds. A popular hero, Taylor was nominated for President on the Whig ticket, was elected, and assumed office in 1849. His nonpartisan tendencies were changed under the influence of Senator William H. Seward, and Taylor was soon a strong supporter of Whig policy. As President, he supported the Wilmot Proviso , which excluded slavery from all the territory acquired as a result of the Mexican War. He favored rapid admission of both California and New Mexico to the Union and strict limitation of Texas boundary claims. His free-soil views put him in opposition to the measures that were to become the Compromise of 1850 . After charges of corruption were lodged against members of his cabinet, he promised a reorganization, but was stricken with cholera morbus and died on July 9, 1850. He was succeeded by Millard Fillmore See biographies by H. Hamilton (2 vol., 1941 and 1951; repr. 1966), B. Dyer (1946, repr. 1967), and S. B. McKinley and S. Bent (1946); E. J. Nichols

Fort Zachary Taylor is a Perfect example of the wealth of history
Florida has to offer. The park, which now covers a total of 87 acres,
is a National Landmark that played a significant role in Florida's
    early development.
Construction of the fort began in 1845, shortly after Florida became a
state. In 1850, the fort was named after U.S. President Zachary Taylor,
who died in office earlier that year. Throughout the 1850s, construction
on the Fort Taylor was slow. Yellow Fever, shortages of material and
men, remoteness and hurricanes had slowed down progress.
When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Capt. John Brannon occupied the fort, placing it in Union hands. Key West was an important outpost for the Union because numerous blockade running ships were detained at Key West harbor and guarded by Fort Taylor's cannons. The 10 inch Rodman and Columbiad cannons at the fort had a range of three miles. This was an impressive deterrent to the Confederate navy, preventing them from attempting to take the fort or the island of Key West. Proving
