Tatting sampler made with DMC embroidery floss, click on image to enlarge Almost 10 years ago, I picked up a 1940's sewing encyclopedia at the Salvation Army for about $.50. It had such a wealth of information in it, from sewing garments to embellishing them with embroidery and lace. One of the chapters was on tatting. The laces that were pictured were so beautiful, I knew I had to try and make them. I picked up a tatting shuttle from my local department store and a ball of crochet cotton and started to get to work. Following the directions in the book, I couldn't get them to work, so the book and the shuttle were put away and forgotten. Several years later, I cam across the book and the shuttle and decided to have another go at it. It worked! I'm still a novice, but I have made some really pretty laces using this easy to learn technique. Supplies: Threads: You can tat with practically any thread. The sampler shown at the top of the page was made with DMC embroidery floss. I have also used DMC Pearl Cotton in several sizes and size 10 crochet cotton. Both of these threads work very well for practice, although the lighter weight pearl cottons are good because their sheen helps your stitches move a bit easier. I've only worked a few times with DMC tatting thread and I haven't developed the knack yet to work with such a fine thread. I find that the crochet cotton makes a nice size lace, is relatively easy to work with, and is very inexpensive.

Email T atting is a type of knotted lace. A shuttle and thread are used to make the lace. The stitch is formed over the hand. While the resulting lace looks quite delicate, tatting is actually simple to do. The tatted piece is made up of basically ‘two half hitch’ knots which are used not as a clove hitch, but as a Lark’s Head knot (also Cow Hitch) where the second half hitch is formed to vertically mirror the first half hitch. This double stitch is used over and over to form a pattern. Extra thread used between double stitches creates"picots" or loops of thread. From The Tatter’s Treasure Chest: "The history of tatting can be traced back over 200 years. It originally developed as anattempt to reproduce the expensive Venetian laces of the sixteenth century, but it has long since come to be appreciated for its own particular beauty." Additional history of the Art can be found in Tatting Technique and History, by Elgiva Nicholls. Some books I particularly like and use a lot because the instructions are presented in a manner that is easy to read:

THE NETTING NEEDLE The Tatting Book (1850) she states: "To obviate the difficulties above mentioned I have substituted a netting needle [emphasis mine] for the shuttle which has enabled me to attach and shape the pattern while working: and where the loops are too small to admit of the netting needle passing through, I have given directions for using a sewing needle [emphasis mine] instead. This had nothing to do with the simulated and true tatting produced by various modern Needle Tatting techniques. Instead, it produced tatting using a netting and/or sewing needle (Riego) to shuttle the thread through picots. True tatting requires the use of the 'turned' half hitch. This can be accomplished by tatting with the hands, a shuttle, or, as described above, a sewing or netting needle. The Needle Tatting techniques that produce true tatted rings 'turn' the half hitches onto a 'core' needle before pulling the core thread through; this same technique can be done with a shuttle (clumsily) by 'turning' half hitches in the core thread and passing the shuttle through them. An early simulated tatting technique was the chain made of the 'unturned' half hitch. This technique of

Needle Tatting Video Tatting with a needle is a popular alternative to using a shuttle, and many needle crafters find it easier than shuttle tatting. The purpose of needle tatting is to learn on the needle and then use any tatting pattern on the market. For a beginner this video show a lot of visual reinforcements as you learn the double stitch, which is the only stitch in tatting. Intermediate and advance needle tatters will find it an easy-to-use guide for techniques. My mom used to sew me clothes when I was a kid. I never had much interest in doing it myself back then. It was too girly for me. But sometime after high school, I started sewing. I made a couple vests and some clothes for dolls. I really enjoy sewing now. I have my eye on learning how to quilt. Someday soon when I have lots of time to spare! Jack's Blanket
This is a really fun and easy blanket to make. I don't remember what type of fabric I used, but it's light-weight and soft. It's solid blue on one side and striped blue on the other with a white bias tape edging. The crocheted blanket behind Jack's head was made by his Great Grandma Johnson. Toy for Jack
Here is a toy of my own design that I made for Jack. It's made with felt and has velcro tabs so that it can hang on the side of his crib. One side has a happy, sunny face and the other has a sleepy face. Stuffed Animals
I also enjoy making pseudo-beany babies! The cow is made out of fleece.
