Right now, in the wilds of Tasmania, the Tassie Devil is getting down and dirty. This month Scribbly Gum peeks into the very private life of the world's largest carnivorous marsupial. Tasmanian Devils are in the middle of their mating season. Their young will gestate through autumn and winter and emerge from the pouch next spring. We discover how these aggressive animals find a mate and how their unique adaptations have enabled them to survive more than a century of persecution by humans. Tasmanian Devils Introduction
The Tasmanian Devil is a Marsupial, found only in Tasmania. It is a nocturnal animal (that means it only comes out at night )It was named by early European settlers because of its eerie growl which starts with a whistle and ends in a bark.Tasmanian Devils have a pouch it opens backwards. They mate in March and carry their babies in the pouch. The young Devils spend 15 weeks in their mother's pouch. Devils are known for their anger and for tempers.
This is a map of Tasmania
(Where the Tasmanian Devils live) What they eat Tasmanian Devils have one of the strongest jaws out of any animal and usually eat all of their prey. Once a family of Devils ate a whole horse and left only the skull and tail. They eat other small mammals and reptiles as well as scavenging on dead animals. Where they live The Tasmanian Devil once lived on mainland Australia but they died out because of competition from the dingo. They live for about 7 years in their natural habitat of dry bush and scrub land. They were thought of as pests to farmers but are now known to keep down the numbers of crop eaters such as mice. They are rarely seen because of their nocturnal nature. What they look like The length of their body is 60cm and can sometimes weigh up to 8 or 9 Kg. They are black and very hairy. They are short and sturdy and have a broad head with pinkish almost hairless ears and a long bushy tail.

The latest NPR/National Geographic Radio Expedition is to the island of Tasmania to meet the legendary Tasmanian devil. This ferocious animal, named for its nasty disposition and island of origin, is unlike the Warner Brothers cartoon character a small, black marsupial that walks on four legs. Roughly the size of a large beagle, the devil is characterized by its sharp teeth, aggressive stance and voracious appetite.
Tasmanian devils are found only on Tasmania, an island off the southern coast of Australia. And surprisingly, their population is increasing. Wildlife experts believe there are more devils alive now than there were before the introduction of roads and cars. A major reason for the population boom is industrialization, a phenomenon that normally destroys native species. The Tasmanian devil has adapted to development by turning to a new food source roadkill.
National Geographic photographer David Doubilet journeyed to Tasmania and spoke to John and Carolyn Hamilton, proprietors of a local wildlife center where orphaned and injured devils are taken in, rehabilitated, and when possible, released.

Tasmanian Devil

The Tasmanian Devil is a nocturnal mammal that was named for the demonic sound that it makes at night, especially when it is feeding or fighting, but it is really quite shy. It resembles a small, squat dog and has black fur with white on its neck, shoulders and rump. Devils live throughout Tasmania in forests and farmlands, sleeping during the day in logs, caves or burrows and coming out at night. They occasionally hunt for young or wounded animals but usually eat carrion, fur and all, and so help to clean up the countryside of dead animals and rubbish. These hard-working animals have exceptionally strong jaws - nine times as strong as dogs' - and can crunch through bones with ease. A devil can eat almost 40% of its own weight in 30 minutes. The devil is a protected animal. Devils are readily seen at the Asbestos Range National Park, Mt. William National Park, Cradle Mt. National Park, the Arthur River and highland lakes area. Look for them a few hour hours after sunset.
Today, devils are particularly common in some north, east and central districts where some farming practices (e.g. rangeland sheep grazing) provide much carrion. Tasmanian devils can be seen in many rural and wilderness areas by slowly driving at night along secondary roads.

Tasmanian Devil
Tasmanian Devil Webmaster My Resume Tasmanian Devil ANZACS Mystery My father and grandfather were both bushmen in Tasmania, and some days I would go out for the day with them into the bush. After the dusk hour, when the sun had cast an eerie, orange-red glow through the ever dark clouds hovering over the distant hills, the 'Devil' came out. I would scour the roadside for the reflection of their eyes, as we drove back home. A thrill of excitement would go up my spine when I saw the sign of these nocturnal creatures.
Sarcophilus harrisii
Meaning flesh ( Sarco ) lover ( philus Identification
Black above and below, usually with white neck patch. Size of fox-terrier. Vocalisation
Something out of your worst nightmare The Tasmanian devil cannot be mistaken for any other marsupial, the world's largest surviving carnivorous marsupial, the devil has a thick-set, squat build. Its spine-chilling screeches, black colour, and reputed bad-temper, led the early European settlers to call it The Devil. Although only the size of a small, stoutly-built dog, it can sound and look incredibly fierce. Their large powerful jaws and teeth are noticeable, especially as the jaws have a gape of 120 degrees, enabling it to completely devour its prey - bones, fur and all. They often appear battle-scarred and have bald patches on their coats.

Tasmania Devils
Tasmanian Devil
By Joylynn Benefiel
This interesting, little hunter once lived on the Australian mainland. Farmers and ranchers feared that the Tasmanian Devil would wipe out their animals. As a result, this creature was exterminated on the mainland. However, the Tasmanian Devil can still be found on the Island of Tasmania, south of mainland Australia. The Tasmanian devil prefers to live alone in a burrow, dense undergrowth, or a hollow log. Tasmanian Devils usually do not fight each other, unless it is over food. They like to hunt at night. The Tasmanian Devils diet includes; rodents, lizards, wallabies , sheep and chickens. They have a superior immune system, which allows them to eat dead animals that have already begun to rot. Tasmanian Devils are excellent scavengers. I hope you enjoyed reading about this amazing and remarkable creature. I know I have enjoyed learning about the Tasmanian Devil.
