TARANTULAS

Mygalomorphae
A tarantula by any other name ... What we call tarantulas should properly be called mygalomorphs. The true tarantulas are smaller (but still hairy) spiders that belong to the genus Lycosa and the family of wolf spiders, found in Europe.
How are mygalomorphs different from other spiders?
Big hairy deal:
Mygalomorphs are generally larger than most spiders and have hairy legs and bodies. In fact, some large hairy spiders have been wrongly called tarantulas. Mygalomorphs have rather poor eyesight and depend on these hairs to detect prey and avoid predators, by air currents and ground movements.
VITAL STATISTICS
Size:
The biggest is the Giant Tarantula ( Theraphosa leblondi ) from South America: 30cm from toe to toe.
Lifespan: Females: 20-30 years. Males: 5-7 years, usually die after mating.
Metamorphosis: Incomplete, no pupal stage. Hatchlings look like miniature adultes. Females mature in 3-10 years.

70. Tarantulas
tarantulas. The large hairy tarantulas have also been called 'birdeatingspiders' but this Victorian term is somewhat misleading.
http://www.nhm.ac.uk/entomology/insident/tarantul.html
Tarantulas Nowadays, the name 'tarantula' is applied to the very large, hairy spiders that belong to the family Theraphosidae. Originally, the name was given to a much smaller wolf spider from Taranto in Italy where, in the Middle Ages, they used to dance the 'tarantella' to purge the effects of spiders' bites.
The large hairy tarantulas have also been called 'bird-eating spiders' but this Victorian term is somewhat misleading. The diet of the average tarantula consists of insects ranging from ants to large crickets and cockroaches, and small vertebrates such as lizards, frogs, mice and occasionally small snakes. Only rarely do they eat birds.
Identification More than 600 species of tarantulas are known from tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The coloration of most is typically black or brown but some species are beautifully marked. Worthy of mention are the Poecilotheria species of southern India and Sri Lanka which have bright yellow on the first four legs; also the

Terrific Tarantulas
Robert J. Wolff, Ph.D.
From the Biology Department,
Trinity Christian College, Palos Heights, Illinois 60463 The name "tarantula" means a variety of things to different people. It can mean the wolf spider from southern Italy, with its somewhat toxic bite, or the tailless whipscorpions, who belong to the family Tarantulidae. Or to many people, tarantula simply means any large, frightening spider they come across. Primarily, however, tarantula means the generally large, hairy spiders that belong to the family Theraphosidae. Spiders belong to the order Araneae, and the majority are considered true spiders, whose fangs point to the midline and open sideways. In contrast, fangs of the order Mygalomorphae open parallel to the long axis of the body. Mygalomorphs include the trapdoor and purseweb spiders, as well as those that are commonly called tarantulas and belong to the Theraphosidae.
Structure
Tarantulas are hairy, large (35 mm or more in length), and have the basic morphology of the true spiders (Fig. 1), including two body regions, the cephalothorax (prosoma) and the abdomen (opisthosoma). The appendages of the cephalothorax include four pairs of legs, a pair of pedipalps, and a pair of fang-tipped chelicerae. The abdomen differs from that of the true spiders by having posteriorly only two pairs of spinnerets rather than three pairs, and by having ventrally two pairs of booklungs rather than one pair. You can usually identify mature males by the special copulatory organs (palps) on the pedipalps, and by the hooks on the first pair of legs (Fig. 2). Adult females are not as easily identifiable because they often lack obvious external clues; only size and (in some) a swelling in the genital area at the ventral slit, called the epigastric furrow, allow a guess.

One of the best ways to learn about animals is to keep and look after them. insects and other invertebrates are no exception. In most cases they are easy to look after (provided you've found out about them first) , inexpensive and don't require a vast amount of space. Below are links to care sheets for some of the more commonly kept invertebrates.
IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU KNOW THE NEEDS AND REQUIREMENTS OF YOUR PET BEFORE YOU
OBTAIN THE ANIMAL. YOU SHOULD NEVER, EVER OBTAIN AN ANIMAL BEFORE RESEARCHING ITS NEEDS AND PREPARING THE NECESSARY CAGE AND CONDITIONS.

However check with an adult before you go picking up any strange animals and always make sure you know the type of housing required for any animal you want to keep. tarantulas. Before life. Many tarantulas die in the first few days becausetheir new owner hasn't prepared a suitable home for them.
http://www.ex.ac.uk/bugclub/tarant.html
TARANTULAS Before you buy a tarantula you should think about the conditions it will need to live a long and healthy life. Many tarantulas die in the first few days because their new owner hasn't prepared a suitable home for them. First decide what you want to buy because a small spiderling will obviously require very different accommodation to a large grown specimen. I will assume you are buying a medium-sized tarantula in which case you will need to provide the following. HOUSING Pet shops will sell suitable tanks in glass or plastic and the size should not be less than about 25cm by 15cm by 15cm high. If you want to create a tank that tries to provide the spiders natural conditions (for example rain forest with leaf litter, logs etc.) then you will need a much larger tank, but you won't see your spider very often! I would suggest that you begin with the simple tank without unnecessary contents so that you can watch your tarantula's activities. SUBSTRATE (Ground cover) A 2cm layer of Vermiculite should cover the bottom of the tank and a thin layer of chipped bark or cocoa fibre placed on top of that. These can be purchased from most garden centres and should be kept damp to keep up the humidity levels in the tank. Peat or potting compost should not be used as they really need to be sterilised and changed frequently.

22nd May 1999 This little guy or gal is 1" from stem to stern. It has now stopped stuffing itself with crickets and has decided, (I think),to molt.
My Very First Tarantula This is my Chilan Rose Tarantula (Grammostola spatulata) There is some controversy on it's scientific name but she's just Rosy to me. When she is hungry it is very easy to tell. She stands up on all 8 legs and waits for me to toss in a cricket. Recently bred 6/26/99
STEELY BLUE -Freshly Molted Molt and T. after 12 hours:
  • After not eating for about 2 weeks Steely decided to molt
  • I had the chance to watch it right from the start. It rolled over on it's back, and lay still for about 1/2 hour, then slowly started to escape from it's skeleton. It is now still letting it's outer skeleton harden. I'll wait for about 4 or 5 days before feeding it.
