RESEARCH
Taiwan's geographic location has caused it to change hands many times, resulting in an abundant and diverse historical record. Taiwanese history is generally divided into five periods: prehistoric, Dutch-Spanish colonization, conquest by Koxinga, Ch'ing empire, Japanese Occupation, and post-War (Republic). This makes the study of Taiwan's history difficult, because each period possesses its own unique characteristics and each ruling people represents a different culture, language, and ethnic group. This office will stress the following aspects of development: research techniques, research methodologies, and research topics.
RESEARCH TECHNIQUES
Emphasis will be placed on appropriate division of labor as well as cooperative projects. Many people outside Academia Sinica have eagerly awaited the Institute of Taiwan History's founding, but due to the limited size of research staff, it is presently impossible to research all facets of Taiwanese history. Therefore, the Institute plans to engage in cooperative projects with researchers from other institutes at Academa Sinica and other academic organizations in Taiwan and abroad, in order to coordinate efforts on specific research projects.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
The Office plans to emphasize interdisciplinary research, because historical studies encompass a range of academic fields. The Institute of Taiwan History's success will depend on the support of scholars representing a broad scope of research interests who can cooperate in research projects. The Office hopes that such interdisciplinary cooperation will result in the establishment of theoretical models for interpreting Taiwan history which will con-tribute to elevating this field's status worldwide.

Japan formally surrenders on the deck of the U.S. battleship Missouri, ending World War II Japan is forced to return to China all the territories it had occupied, including Taiwan (then called Formosa), which it had acquired in 1895 after the first Sino-Japanese war. Top After the handover, life for Taiwan's citizens doesn't change much under the rule of China's Nationalist forces (called the Kuomingtang, or KMT). Their hopes that the end of Japan's rule would liberate Taiwan turned to frustration. The KMT and immigrating mainlanders prolong the country's problems. Inflation slows the economy and unemployment rises.

Early History through World War II
The earliest Chinese settlements on Taiwan began in the 7th cent., chiefly from the mainland provinces of Fujian and Guangdong. The island was reached in 1590 by the Portuguese, who named it Formosa [=beautiful]. In 1624 the Dutch founded forts in the south at present Tainan, while the Spanish established bases in the north. The Dutch, however, succeeded in expelling the Spaniards in 1641 and assumed control of the entire island. They in turn were forced to abandon Taiwan in 1662, when Koxinga , a general of the Ming dynasty of China who had to flee from the Manchus, seized the island and established an independent kingdom. However, the island fell to the Manchus in 1683. Chinese immigration increased, and the aboriginal population was gradually pushed into the interior. Japan, attracted by the island's strategic and economic importance, acquired Taiwan by the Treaty of Shimonoseki (1895) after the First

SUN YAT-SEN:
Sun Yat-sen Born Nov. 12, 1866 in Guangdong province, 1879 Studies medicine in Hawaii, 1895 Leads first insurrection against Qing dynasty, 1905 Develops "Three Principles of the People", 1911 Qing dynasty is overthrown, 1913 Kuomintang, the party he founded, wins national election but is soon expelled from parliament, 1925 Dies March 12 in Beijing At his political base in Canton, 1917 Recognized by Chinese everywhere as their country's modern founder, the physician-turned-nationalist failed in his dream of unification.
In the turbulent and tangled history of modern China, Sun Yat-sen holds a unique place. Claimed as a personal inspiration and political guide by the most bitterly opposed political parties, he is known to millions as "the Father of the Chinese Revolution." Yet his own life was a constant scramble for livelihood and influence, he spent much of his time in exile, and almost none of his cherished schemes came near to fruition. The twin strands of inspiration and failure define the relationship between his life and the history of his country.
The contest for leadership of China after Sun Yat-sen's death had several contenders but one clear favorite: Chiang Kai-shek.

Taiwan
History
Little archaeological evidence remains from Taiwan's early history. People - probably Pacific Islanders at first - may have lived here for about 10,000 years, with migration from China beginning in the 15th century. In 1517 Portuguese sailors reached Taiwan and named it Ilha Formosa, or beautiful island. The Dutch invaded in 1624 and built a capital at Tainan - two years later they lost the island to a Spanish invasion, but returned the favour by booting the Spanish out in 1641. During the 1660s the Ming and Manchu dynasties arrived on the scene, kicking out the Dutch and wrestling one another for control of the island. The Manchus eventually won, making Taiwan a county of Fujian Province and triggering a flood of Chinese immigration. Japan took Taiwan from China in 1895 and held on to it until the end of WWII, when it was handed back to China. When Communist forces took control of China in 1949, the president, General Chiang Kaishek, and his nationalist party, the Kuomintang, fled to Taiwan to plan their reconquest of the mainland. They're still planning. One and a half million Chinese also left the mainland for Taiwan when Mao took control. The leaders of both Communist mainland China and the Republic of China (Taiwan) claim to be the voice of all China, but the international community has, almost without exception, chosen the mainland. In 1971 the Kuomintang lost the Chinese United Nations seat, and in 1979 the USA withdrew its recognition of the Republic.

BASIC INFO. GEOGRAPHY GOVERNMENT ... TAIWAN Taiwan, located off the coast of China, came to prominence in 1949 when the Nationalist forces (about two million strong) retreated from the Mainland as Communism took over the country. For decades, the world recognized Taiwan as the legitimate government of China but in 1971, Communist China assumed the United Nations seat that had been occupied by Taiwan. Eight years later, Taiwan's firmest ally, the United States, recognized the People's Republic of China. Worries that Taiwan would be harmed economically were misplaced and in the decades since, it has become one of the strongest in the world. Taiwan's government has maintained coolness towards any suggestion that Taiwan 'reunify' with the Communist Mainland.

Taiwan History
Taiwan Under the Dutch (1624 - 1662)
Taiwan's experiences at thehands of the Western imperialists did not really begin until after Portuguese navigators discovered the island and named it Ilha Formosa ('beautiful island') in 1590. While the Portuguese were the first Westerners to sight and name the island, they did not, however, attempt colonisation. It was the Dutch who decided to colonise Taiwan and make it a part of their empire in Southeast Asia. In 1595, a Dutch merchant named Cornelius Houtman formed the Dutch East India Company that was based in Batavia (today's Jakarta) on the island of Java in the Spice Islands (Indonesia). The Dutch East India Company eventually annexed the whole of the Southeast Asian archipelago, and the Spice Islands became known as the Dutch East Indies. The Dutch were not only primarily interested in the profits that could be made from trading spices like cinnamon, cloves, pepper and nutmeg, but were also eager to trade with the Chinese. However, continually frustrated by Chinese refusals to allow the establishment of a Dutch trading post on its territory, Dutch forces wrested the Pescadores - a small group of islands just of the west coast of Taiwan - from the Chinese in 1622 and established a military base. From the Pescadores, they threatened China with further reprisals unless given a trading post, and harassed the already profitable Portuguese trade with Japan, China and the Philippines. The Dutch also lay further claim to Taiwan by establishing a small settlement on the island of Taoyuan, just off the south coast of Taiwan.

By Alice Liang, Staff Reporter, Central News Agency Taipei, Aug. 8 (CNA) The Taiwan History Research Foundation on Tuesday issued the multi-volume Taiwan History that records modern Taiwan's history in words and pictures. Opposition People First Party (PFP) Chairman James Soong, who attended the launch, said sending out the correct history of Taiwan is very important. He claimed that all the Han Chinese who came to Taiwan came seeking a better life, and further claimed that everyone in Taiwan shares the same history and strives for an ideal future. Soong said Taiwan's history is not all sorrowful, but also has satisfaction and achievement, and he noted that the main purpose of the book is to give a correct understanding of the island's past. Foundation President Hsu Tsung-mao, who hosted the launch party, expressed the hope that the people of Taiwan can form a correct view of Taiwan's history through the book, and he thanked the Central News Agency and the China Times for providing the pictures used in the book. HISTORY OF COLONIALISM
TAIWAN AFTER WWII
After WWII, the Allies went on to consolidate the world map. The Soviet Union entered Eastern Europe. The United States returned to the Philippines. The United Kingdom re-colonized Malaysia. France re-occupied Vietnam. The Republic of China, also a member of the Allies, was entrusted with the governance of Taiwan. The Taiwanese holocaust of 1947 has come to be known as the “2-28 Massacre ” or simply “2-28”. In 1949, the Republic of China government took refuge in Taiwan after Chinese communists won the Chinese civil war. In the subsequent four decades, Taiwan was under Martial Law and the families of "2-28” victims were continuously harassed and discriminated by the self-imposed Chinese government. The Taiwanese were afraid of any discussion of “2-28” but the memory of “2-28” never died. With the recent democratization, the Taiwanese have gradually taken control of the government and in 1997, February 28 th became a national holiday for the country, ironically, called the Republic of China on Taiwan.
