Chinese domination unbroken
Before these Games began, China had won 10 of the 12 gold medals awarded. Sydney only improved China's percentages as the Chinese swept the board, winning all four gold medals on offer.
Not content with taking four golds, the Chinese also took three silver medals from three all-Chinese gold medal games.
The Australians tried hard, but were simply outclassed, although Miao Miao and Shirley Zhou showed some ability in the women's doubles, making a little progress into the main draw.
All matches run from Saturday 16 September to Monday 25 September.

Third FESPIC Table Tennis Championships
Background
While European Table Tennis Championships have a long history -even before the establishment of the International Paralympics Committee (IPC) in 1989, the Championships in the FESPIC region started only when the quota system was introduced after the Barcelona Paralympics (1992) as players then had to qualify via high ranking positions for Paralympic Games and the World Championships. After FESPIC Table Tennis Championships in Hong Kong (1997) and Taipei (1999), Osaka, Japan now hosted the third Championships 29 June - 5 July this year.
The Preparations
Being the ITTC Technical Delegate, I went to Osaka for a venue inspection in April 2000. I found that all venues were up to the ITTC requirement and moreover, as Osaka was also the host for the World Championships for able-bodied this same year, I had full confidence that the 3rd Championships were to be successful ones.

Venus and Yevgeny Take Singles Gold Venus Williams has a pretty good winning streak going in singles: 32 in a row, including Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and now the Olympic gold medal. She defeated Elena Dementieva 6-2, 6-4 in the final. Dementieva is a fast-rising Russian star in women's tennis, a tall, powerful, and quick 18-year-old, but she was completely overpowered by Williams. Both Williams and Dementieva had been tested in their semifinals. Venus got by Monica Seles 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, while Elena worked a little harder to advance against Australian Jelena Dokic 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Venus followed up by winning the gold medal in doubles with her sister Serena. Venus and Serena simply crushed the Dutch team, Kristie Boogert and Miriam Oremans, 6-1, 6-1. The match took just 50 minutes. Venus became only the second woman in Olympic history to win both the singles and the doubles gold. Helen Wills was the first, in 1924. The bronze singles medal went to Seles, who defeated Dokic 6-1, 6-4. Belgians Els Callens and Dominique Van Roost took the doubles bronze over Olga Barabanshchikova and Natasha Zvereva of Belarus 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

As the nine-day Asian Games table tennis tournament came to an end Wednesday afternoon, many of the 19 participating teams, with or without a gold, had made their Asiad history.
In what some had called "the biggest surprise" at this Asiad, DPR Korean women team, in a full display of gallantry, perseverance and confidence, gave a shock 3-1 defeat to the all-star Chinese team in a Friday evening encounter.
This was the first Asiad team gold for the DPR Korean women, aswell as their first victory against the powerful Chinese in more than four years. China was the victor in both of the previous encounters between the two - in the finals of the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games and last year's Osaka world championships.
"While we were training very hard, we believed that one day we could win, and the day has come in Ulsan," said a DPR Korean team official.

China's Long March Up the Olympic Medal Table
China's sporting dragon roared through the Sydney Olympics with a glut of gold medals, world records - and not the merest whiff of a drug scandal.
A glittering record haul of 28 gold, 16 silver and 15 bronze medals swept the Chinese into third place in the overall medal table, their best finish in Olympic history.
"Our athletes showed China is a sports-loving country at the Sydney Olympics. We had hoped for 15 or 16 medals but we never dreamed of this," said China official Li Furong. "It is a great achievement and all our athletes should feel proud," he added. Importantly for Beijing's 2008 Olympic bid, China's athletes also left Sydney untainted by any of the drug scandals which dogged the 16-day sports extravaganza. China's gold medal rush was due in part by the introduction of women's weightlifting in the Olympics for the first time. All four of China's women lifters struck gold, Ding Meiyuan earning the accolade of "strongest woman in the world" with her victory in the super-heavyweight class.

The Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta came to a close Sunday night, after two weeks of athletic competition between 197 countries and over 11,000 athletes the most ever in an Olympic Games. The Games closed with International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch praising the city of Atlanta, but notably failing to call the game as "the greatest in Olympic history" a phrase that has become routine in his Closing Ceremonies speeches.
