Academy News : November 1998 New study reports asthma prevalence in 1996 U.S. Summer Olympic athletes At least one in six athletes representing the United States in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta had a history of asthma, according to a study published today in the November issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Researchers at the University of Iowa and the U.S. Olympic Committee sought to examine how many athletes in the 1996 Olympic Games had a history of asthma, had taken asthma medications or had symptoms that suggested asthma. To examine asthma prevalence, John Weiler, M.D., FAAAAI, University of Iowa professor of internal medicine, and his co-authors analyzed responses from an extensive, mandatory medical history questionnaire required of all U.S. athletes competing in the 1996 Olympic Games. The questionnaire was completed during team processing in Atlanta two weeks prior to participation in the Olympic Games and responses were reviewed with each athlete. The questionnaire, designed by the U.S. Olympic Committee Sports Medicine Division with input from Weiler and his colleagues, included specific questions regarding allergic and respiratory disorders. Although 4-7% of the general population is reported to have asthma, the number of athletes who reported asthma was considerably higher. Out of the 699 athletes who completed the questionnaire, 117 (16.7%) were found to have a history of asthma, use of asthma medications, or both. Seventy-three (10.4%) of the athletes had active asthma, based on their need for asthma medication at the time of the questionnaire or their need for medication on a permanent or semi-permanent basis.

In 1953, after the 2nd Winter Games held in Oslo between the 10th and the 14th of February, the 7th International games took place at Brussels between the 15th and the 19th of August. Mr. Rubens-Alcais retired as the President following the 12th Congress held at Brussels in 1953 and was replaced by Mr. Oscar Ryden of Sweden. Mr. Rubens-Alcais passed away on the 8th of March, 1963 and was buried in the cemetry of Ivry, near Paris.
Mr. Ryden served for two years with zeal and intelligence before the position was passed on to Mr. J.P. Nielsen of Denmark at the 13th Congress in Oberammergau 1955. Australia and New Zealand were accepted as members of the same Congress, bringing the membership up to 23 nations.
On the 15th of June, 1955, the International Olympic Committee announced its unanimous recognition of the CISS as an "International Federation with Olympic standing." Following this recognition, the CISS agreed at the 14th Congress in Milan in 1957 to amend its statues in accordance with the Olympic spirit. This meant that the word "Olympic" and five ring emblems shall not be used by the CISS. At the same Congress, Argentina, German Democratic Republic, Chile, Greece, Iran, Israel, Turkey, Uruguay and the U.S.S.R., were welcomed as new members, bringing the total membership to 32 nations. Canada was accepted as a new member at the next Congress, the 15th at Montana-Vermala during the 4th Winter Games.

Olympics History Swimming: The primitive man, as they say, was compelled to learn swimming to avoid drowning. A little development, in the method of swimming was brought out by the natives of South America. There are evidences of swimming as a competitive sport. As in the case of many sports and games, development and popularity in swimming as a competitive sport came through Modern Olympics. USA, USSR, the GDR and Australia are the makers of superstars in the world swimming. Table Tennis: It is believed that the credit for origin of table tennis goes to England. In the later part of the 18th century cork balls were used. Subsequently they were replaced by celluloid balls. When International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) was formed in 1926, rules, which were introduced then, have since been modified. Later on, this game became very popular in Asian and European countries. China is the "Ping-Pong" king in the world of TT, had its Olympic debut in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Tennis: There are different opinions regarding the origin of Tennis. While some link its origin to Persia and Greece, some attribute it to Egypt. There are reasons to believe that French people invented and developed this game in the middle of the 15th century when no nets or rackets were invented as we see today.

Sunday, September 17, 2000 China or ex-Chinese dominate Olympic table tennis
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) If history is a guide, the battle for Olympic table tennis gold will be an all-Chinese affair although the players won't necessarily be battling for Beijing. Testifying to China's dominance of the sport, around two dozen players competing at Sydney for adopted countries were born in China, among them former members of its national squad or products of its formidable table tennis system.
