Among bowed strings, we offer some nicely made but quite inexpensive rebecs and vielles (fiedels) by Bernard Lehmann; their distinctive reedy tone qualities provide an essential ingredient of the medieval instrumentarium. We also offer fine bowed psalteries by the Kelischek Workshop and Folkcraft Instruments. Among plucked string instruments, we have a handsome psaltery by Kelischek and three different models of psalteries by Folkcraft, each with its own distinctive tone color. We also have a number of different models of medieval and renaissance hurdy-gurdies by George Kelischek. Back to Top of Page Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque Lutes The lute, which was introduced from Arabic lands to Europe in the late Middle Ages, emerged as the principal plucked string instrument of the late renaissance and baroque periods. Its unique structural and acoustical properties spawned a substantial body of music for solo lute as well as songs with lute accompaniment. Whereas the renaissance lute and its flat-backed Spanish relative the vihuela were relatively standardized in construction, the baroque period saw the development of many different sizes and string configurations, as well as archlutes, theorbos, and hybrids such as theorboed lutes. The American Balalaika Symphony performs music ranging from folk to symphonic, combining the best of Russian and American traditions. A balalaika orchestra is similar to a traditional symphony orchestra but uses plucked string instruments such as the balalaika and domra rather than Western bowed instruments like the violin and cello. The orchestra's unique sound is rounded out by accordion and bayan (Russian button accordion), gusli (an ancient Russian table harp), and full wind and percussion sections. The sound is distinctive but familiarly symphonic. This spring the American Balalaika Symphony presents a concert program that highlights the tricentennial of the great Russian city of St. Petersburg. The program will feature a variety of classical symphonic works as well as Russian and Eastern European folk music. In addition to beloved classics by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Gliere and Khachaturian, the program will include discovered musical gems by G. Gimenez, B. Asafiev, M. Shishkin, A. Belyayev and A. Tsygankov. There will also be solo performances featuring domra virtuoso Elena Rector and surprise vocal selections by Vladimir Rozenblat. The orchestra was founded in 2001 by conductor and artistic director Peter Trofimenko and is made up of an internationally diverse mixture of professional and amateur musicians in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

String Instruments from Around the World According to the classification system developed by E.M. von Hornbostel and C. Sachs, all string instruments are called chordophones. Chordophones are instruments in which strings are stretched under tension, and sound is produced by causing strings to vibrate. This may be done by plucking, strumming, striking, or bowing the strings, or even allowing them to be blown by the wind, as in the case of the Aeolian harp. String instruments are known in every culture. String instruments can be divided into four categories: harps, zithers, lutes, and lyres. Because there are so many variations of these instruments, it is sometimes difficult to assign an instrument to one category. Early string instruments may have looked like the hunting bow (bow and arrow). Such an instrument is called a musical bow. The first object drawn across it to produce sound may have been a stick. Various types of resonators such as gourds were added to these bows to enhance the sound. If you think of the hunting bow standing upright, with its curved back next to you, you can imagine, with the addition of some strings, how the harp came into existence. We know that the harp has existed since ancient times. Harps have frames, across which strings are stretched. There is a resonator, or in the case of the modern Western symphonic harp, a soundboard.
