Graphic by: Shoichi Shiomi Winter Olympic Games 1998 Snowboarding . The last international games of the century featured competitors from about 80 different countries. There are many exciting sports to watch at the Winter Olympic Games. Extensive sports coverage was available via the Internet and traditional media sources. The various competitions were held from February 7, 1998 to February 21, 1998. A quick overview of the some of the sporting events that were featured at the Olympic Games is presented here. There are many great other sources of information that can expand on what is provided here.
Figure skating is known as a sport of grace, and beauty. Olympic figure skaters skate to
musical scores and create a kind of ice ballet. The four Olympic Figure Skating events include the Ladies Singles, the Men's Singles, Pairs or Doubles, and Ice Dancing. Singles and Doubles have two distinct forums which are the Short Program and Free Skating. The Short Program is designed to demonstrate a specific set of skating talents . During Free Skating competition, the Olympic skaters perform to music and are allowed to create a more freeform routine. Ice Dancing provides a sequenced dance on ice that is similar to ballroom dancing performed by a pair of skaters. Olympic Figure skating is an event that draws a large audience from around the world. There are six types of Alpine Skiing events at the Olympic Winter Games. These Alpine Skiing events are Downhill Racing, Slalom, the Giant Slalom, Super Giant Slalom, and Alpine Combination. Downhill Racing is the fastest and most exciting event featured at the Winter Olympic Games. The Slalom, the Giant Slalom, and Super Giant Slalom requires skiers to maneuver skillfully and through a series of gates (poles with flags). These skiing events are the most traditional competitions of the Winter Olympic games.

There was cause for celebration on New Year's Eve last year when the $13.3 million Pettit National Ice Center opened its doors . The 172,800-square-foot center boasts the first indoor 400-meter racing oval in America, and is only one of six such facilities in the world.
According to Bob Doucette, chairman of the Pettit National Ice Center Committee, speed skating, in the past, has often played the "poor cousin" to the more glamorous sport of figure skating. Yet, speed skating has proven to be America's most successful Olympic sport, with American speed skaters capturing more gold medals than all figure skaters and alpine skiers combined.
The Pettit National Ice Center is fashioned after Calgary's Olympic ice track, where several world records have been set, and includes two hockey rinks. The center plays host to the U. S. Olympic Speed Skating team for training, and is also being utilized by figure skaters, speed skating clubs and various hockey teams. The facility is also open for recreational use by the general public.
This variety of uses called for a multi-level lighting system that could be used in both recreational mode and competition mode, and was capable of providing sufficient footcandles for television. David Gennrich, vice president, Staff Electric Co., Inc., the design/build electrical contractor for the Center, indicated a secondary goal was to use as few fixtures as possible to reduce energy usage and installation costs.

News - 2002 U.S. Synchronized Team Championships Get ready for the 2002 U.S. Synchronized Team Championships! For the first time ever, the U.S. Synchronized Skating Championships head to the two-time Olympic village of Lake Placid, N.Y., just as the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City conclude. But even though the Olympic Center has not hosted this championship before, it is no stranger to hosting elite skating events. In fact, in the past six months the facility has seen some of the top skating stars in the world. The Venues A great place to start your Lake Placid visit, the museum gives a brief, yet informative taste of the Olympic history that encompasses Lake Placid. The museum also offers guided tours of the Olympic Center, providing a behind-the-scenes look at its history and on-going importance as a training and competition site. While figure skating is different from speed skating, the Olympic Speed Skating Oval welcomes people of all levels to give it a try. Situated in front of the Lake Placid High School, the Oval is open for public skating throughout the winter. Skating at night under the lights or during the day - on the same track where Eric Heiden made history winning five gold medals in the 1980 Games - should not be missed. A mere nine miles away in Wilmington, N.Y., Whiteface Mountain is a great escape. With the greatest vertical drop in the east, (3,430 ft.) skiers and riders come from miles around to the Olympic Mountain that also hosted the 2000 Winter Goodwill Games. The famed Kids Kampus, which was rated top ten in the country by CHILD magazine, offers a fun and easy learn-to-ski program for kids. The Whiteface Mountain Ski and Snowboard School has rentals and lesson programs for all levels -never-evers all the way up to experts. For those who would rather just enjoy the view, the Cloudsplitter gondola is open for foot passengers year-round and offers spectacular views of the Adirondacks.

When the 1932 games ended, Shea (pictured, right) traded the skates to a Japanese Olympian for a pair of Nordic skis. Shea's skates were then passed to a young Japanese speed skater, Kozo Yoshida. Yoshida, now 62 and a horse breeder in Hokkaido, learned that Shea was recently killed in a car accident and returned the skates to Shea's grandson, Jimmy. Jimmy Shea, an American Olympian who won gold in this year's skeleton event, said that he was "overwhelmed" by Yoshida's generosity. Previous Stories:

: Mike Hewitt/Allsport HISTORY Ice skates first appeared in northern Europe around 300 AD. Made from wood, bone or antlers, skates helped primitive hunters capture wild animals on the fjords and icy terrain. The early bone skate was fastened with straps to boots made from animal skins. The first all-iron skates appear in Scotland. Speed skating soon becomes the first form of skating to become a sport, beating out figure skating and ice hockey. American E.W. Bushnell creates the first all-steel skate. Light and strong, the blades do not require the frequent sharpening of iron runners. Bushnell's creation revolutionizes skating sports. Netherlands hosts the first speed skating World Championships, which bring together the Dutch, Russian, American and English champions. The International Skating Union is founded to govern speed skating and figure skating. Men's speed skating debuts at the first Olympic Winter Games, held in Chamonix, France. American Charles Jewtraw captures gold in the 500-meter race. Women's speed skating debuts at the Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley, Calif. Lydia Skoblikova of the Soviet Union wins gold in the 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters.

In short-track speed skating, competitors squeeze into a tight oval track measuring just 364 ft (111 m) around. At full speed, they jockey for position and often bump one another. Spills are frequent and sometimes nasty. Though short-track speed skating dates back to the late 1800s, the sport didn't become an officially recognized Olympic event until the 1992 Albertville Games The competition consisted of four events in 1992, but has been expanded to eight in 2002:
