The graceful activity we know as ice-skating dates back hundreds of years. Skating was a form of transportation across frozen bodies of water. Cold weather countries like Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia used this method of travel. Early ice skates were made from the leg bones of large animals by cutting holes at each end of the bone and using leather straps to tie them onto people's feet. The animal bones were later replaced by flat iron runners. These were attached to shoes using leather straps. Steel skates replaced the flat iron runners. Recreational ice-skating became a popular winter social activity, so much so that it developed into a sport. There are four Winter Olympic events that rely on ice-skating: ice hockey, speed-skating, ice-dancing and figure-skating. Speed-skating is a race against time. Men race separately from women. Competitors skate around an oval track at speeds up to 30 mph. Men's and women's speed skating events are measured in meters, from 500 to 10,000.
