Letters Call To The Stand Thu Jul 26 I have read the responses to my article (' Homosexuality and Sikhism ', July 23) with much amusement. I never intended the article to be based on gurbani. The single religious quote I included concerned equality, not homosexuality. This article was written from my heart, to draw attention to the numerous Sikhs who are affected by this issue in one way or another. Sikhism is regarded as a religion extolling the virtues of equality in mankind, and yet it has failed to live upto its expectations in many respects recently. Its founder was Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji , (1469-1538) who was born in the Punjab area of what is now Pakistan. At Sultanpur, he received a vision to preach the way to enlightenment and God. He is responsible for the saying "There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim" which has since become one of the pillars of Sikhism. Guru Nanak and Panth (his followers) later built the first Sikh temple at Katarpur. A succession of nine Gurus (regarded as reincarnations of Guru Nanak) led the movement during the period from Guru Nanak's death until 1708. At that time, the functions of the Guru passed to the Panth and to the holy text, considered the 11th Guru. If he did not get intoxicated, the more chances were that he will use his head. If he was forced to respect women, particularly from other communities, it further reduced tensions. Page 6.21 - 3 Eastern Religions 1 C-1311 There is no conveniently proper way to categorize or organize the various eastern religions, but they can be grouped almost artificially into those traditional religions which predominate in the Indian subcontinent at the present time and those which predominate at the present time in the far east, i.e., in China and Japan. Thus the first group includes Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, while the second group includes Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Shinto, and Zen. And while Islam is a major religion in the eastern hemisphere, it belongs perhaps more logically with the western religions due to its more intimate relationship to Christianity. Hinduism is by no means the only significant religion in India, but it enjoys a majority and is related significantly to both Jainism and Sikhism. Thus Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism are three of the traditional religions of India. But each of these (and more) is a significant religion in its own right, and each contributes to the whole (collective world religion). Within each of these religions there are a number of sects, indeed within Hinduism there are many. Each has a peculiar emphasis and each offers opportunities for improving one's relationship to God (the higher Self). Moreover, within Hinduism there are major religious movements that might be considered religions, but there is a sufficient commonality, much like the various Protestant denominations or religions of Christianity, although distinctions between and within religions are sometimes almost arbitrary.
