Long Island Shipwrecks Long Island is the home of the famous "Wreck Valley". Hundreds of charted wrecks can be found in the waters off Long Island. And there are hundreds, maybe even thousands of wrecks that are yet to be discovered or have not been charted. An Interesting, recommended, and well researched book, written by a native Long Islander and occassional visitor to this site is WRECKS AND RESCUES ON L.I. by Van Field is available from Runaway Bay Book Store in Sayville, the Souwester Books Shop in Bellport, Preston's in Greenport, Book Revue in Huntington, at Fire Island and Montauk Lighthouses. It is also available by mail from Van at 17 Inwood Rd, Center Moriches, NY 11934 for $25 plus $2 shipping $27 total, sorry no credit cards.
His stories also appear in L.I. Boating World every month along with Harlan Hamilton's LI Sound Lighthouse stories. They are both interesting publications considering they are FREE at any marina or boating supply store. L.I. Boating World also has a web site at http://www.liboatingworld.com

The stretch of coastline which lies between the two townships of Fortrose and Waikawa, on the south eastern coast, was used by the Maori for food gathering is evident by the number of artefacts later found in the area. At Fortrose the Ruapuke Maori knew the bar well and at Waikawa also, Maori was known to have frequented the harbour. A whaling station was later developed at each place during the 1830-40 period but was of short duration. The sea and coastline were very important to the early European settlers, who gradually developed small townships along the coast. Because the hinterland was heavily timbered, access was by sea and so coastal traders played an important part in the lives of these people. However, the coastline was not always kind, gales blew up from the south-west, the sea became wild and wicked and many mishaps occurred. The major shipwreck was the SS Tararua, which occurred in 1881 with the loss of 131 lives making it the worst sea disaster in New Zealand's history. The Tararua struck the reef at Waipapa Point and although a passenger did manage to swim ashore help was still a long way off, with a young workman from a nearby station having to ride to Wyndham, many miles away with the message, but it was already too late.

The shipwrecks of Inaccessible Island.
http://www.btinternet.com/~sa_sa/inaccessible_island/inaccessible_island_shipwre
For such a small island group, Tristan da Cunha has had a surprising number of shipwrecks: however, the amount of shipping rounding the Cape of Good Hope in the 19th Century meant that islands such as Inaccessible were often used as navigational aids, and were also used as a source of water and fresh meat. Islands such as Inaccessible are still poorly charted, and old sailing ships were often at the mercy of the elements. The Tristan da Cunha Group has claimed at least 22 ships, and in the past their wreckage was used to furnish islander's homes. The three confirmed wrecks on Inaccessible are as follows:
  • The Blenden Hall , wrecked at Blenden Hall in 1821; The Shakespeare , wrecked at Pig Beach in 1883; The Helen S Lea , wrecked at North Point in 1897.
Of these wrecks, by far the most dramatic was that of the Blenden Hall in 1821.
The Wreck of the Blenden Hall
The Blenden Hall The Blenden Hall was a ship of 450 tonnes, built in Southampton (UK) in 1811: she was owned by Captain Alexander Greig and was chartered to the East India Company. Though she sailed frequently between the UK and India, she was not a purpose-built Indiaman. As voyages in these times were often dangerous, she was armed and had a large far beyond that required to work the ship. Blenden Hall sailed from Gravesnd (Kent) on May 6 th , 1821, with a large number of passengers aboard. The ship made good progress through the Bay of Biscay, but was becalmed as they reached the Equator. After crossing the Equator, the ship was carried by currents towards South America: she had to set a South-Westerly course past

Lost to the Sea: The World of Shipwrecks has returned! After the original site sat stale for almost a year, the site's back with a new layout and some new features. I'll show you around. The bar on the left serves as the navigation. Home takes you back to this page. Shipwrecks takes you to all the shipwrecks that are featured on this site. Clicking the shipwrecks on that page will open a new window up featuring information and images of the ship. You can close the window when you're done viewing it. Site Map gives you a map of the site - if you get lost go there, and it gives all the pages on this site. Site Info is some information about the history of Lost to the Sea. Links takes you to some other great shipwreck oriented websites. Forum takes you to the very first (to my knowledge) forum focused on shipwrecks. Click on guestbook to read entries in my guestbook and enter your own. :) Thanks for coming. I hope you enjoy your stay WJ held it down on 8/4/02 at 5:45 PM EST.

8. OTHER INSTITUTIONAL SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ADDRESSES FOR FURTHER HISTORICAL RESEARCH
Over the course of the last decade, research interest in the history of ships and the maritime shipping industry in Canada has increased dramatically. A major component of this renewed interest has been Canada's underwater heritage - the shipwreck. Discovery of the War of 1812 wrecks Hamilton and Scourge in Lake Ontario, and the widely publicized finding of the Titanic served to heighten general public awareness of underwater archaeology and history. Activities of groups such as Save Ontario Shipwrecks (SOS), especially with its emphasis on historical research using archival records, have also contributed to increased demands for information stored in various records repositories across the country. The following notes have been compiled to assist the researcher who wishes to consult federal government records for information relating to shipping losses in Canada. Before describing the major sources of documentation available on shipwrecks in the custody of the Government Archives Division (GAD) of the National Archives of Canada, a few preliminary observations are in order. First, the singlemost important thing to bear in mind is that an archives is not a library. For example, there exists no master list or index to all the records pertaining to shipping losses in Canadian waters at the National Archives. Our federal archival holdings, consisting of subject files and other unpublished documents, are principally arranged according to the name of the department of government that created and/or transferred the records to GAD. Thus, federal records relating to marine casualties are generally located in the documents of the Marine Branch (Record Group 42), Transport Canada (Record Group 12) and National Defence (Record Group 24).

NEW - NEW - NEW Loss of the schooner barney This was the first Preserve created in Michigan to help protect underwater resources. It extends due east from South Point and from Middle Island to the 150 foot contour, and follows that depth roughly north and south between the extension points. Only the Pewabic, Viator, Monrovia and Scott above are outside the Preserve boundaries. All ship traffic between the lower lakes and the lakes Michigan and Superior had to pass Thunder Bay. It was a very busy place, often fog bound and subject to large storms and unpredictable squalls. Upbound and downbound traffic are only separated by a few miles, and even that was impossible in the days of sail. The coast is very unforgiving with numerous shoals and islands of nearly solid rock. The overall result of over 150 years of shipping has left a vast collection of ships resting on the bottom, which today has become a mecca for divers, maritime historians and educators. Charter diving and air service is available in Alpena at the harbor. Many of the divable wrecks have mooring buoys attached.

The bottom lands of the Great Lake Basin are covered with more than an estimated 3,000 shipwrecks. Many of these shipwrecks are still being discovered. The Great Lakes have taken many of these ships by ice, fog, storm and other mysterious ways. The cold fresh waters have helped to preserve these wrecks, making for excellent scuba diving exploration. The adventures and mysteries behind these wrecks date from the 1800's to one of the most well known wrecks, the Edmund Fitzgerald, in 1975. This part of our Web site not only caters to the scuba divers, but also those who are interested in the lore of these shipwrecks. History, photography, locations and accessibility information can be found within. Most of the diving information and photography comes from my own diving experiences and personal data collection. both heart-breaking and heroic. It also tells of the safe havens set up at Currie and Grassy, and of the welcome lighthouses built at Cape Wickham and Currie. In the words of keeper William Hickmott, “I suppose there are no lights in these waters so blest by sailors as the two upon King Island.” At interpretation sites all around the island, memorial cairns will give you an insight into the lives of those shipwrecked, the brave rescuers, and the lighthouse keepers who worked tirelessly through the night to make the King Island waters safe. As you follow the maritime trail, you’ll find yourself transported back to the days when travel by ship was a risky and dangerous adventure. CATARAQUI
The wrecking of the Cataraqui in 1845 remains Australia’s worst civil and maritime disaster: 400 emigrants drowned when the ship struck rocks just a hundred metres offshore on the west coast of King Island. And it was just one of many during the 19th century. NETHERBY
The outcome for passengers aboard the Netherby was a happier one: the crew managed to get all the passengers safely on shore after the ship ran aground. Second mate Mr Parry was the hero of the day. He trekked 35km to Cape Wickham lighthouse to raise the alarm, then borrowed the keeper’s whaleboat to seek help from Melbourne.

    Area Reefs and Diving

It is said the sea never gives up her dead. Often, that's true. The coastal waters surrounding Florida have been the final resting place for many ships over the past four centuries. Ships and crews over the years have found themselves to be casualties of hurricanes, coral reefs, shoals, and even pirates. Many entered Florida waters and have never been heard from again. Quite a number of Florida shipwrecks have been discovered however, and many of those are in waters shallow enough to be excavated. These shipwrecks have become not only popular diving destinations, but reflect a rich history of Florida's maritime importance - both in early European trade, and in the colonial expansion.
