Rhododendrons and Azaleas
by Lindsay Bond Totten
Scripps Howard News Service Gardeners who don't believe our climate is changing haven't been paying very close attention. Either that or they aren't growing rhododendrons and azaleas. Whether we're simply going through a warming cycle, dominated by higher temperatures and less precipitation, or whether the globe is really heating up, rhododendrons and azaleas aren't happy about the shift in the status quo. Former stalwarts of Northeastern gardens, these popular plants are now hurting and their distress has gardeners wondering about their future in our yards.
Azaleas (above) are so closely related to rhododendrons (right) that they share the same genus ( Rhododendron
Do your best to keep existing rhododendrons and azaleas healthy by supplementing with plenty of water during dry spells.

Rhododendrons Growing this plant takes more than a good eye Anna Rose Whitney pink What is more majestic than the rhododendron, with its magnificent flower trusses in the spring? Though it is majestic, this plant is not as common in our spring gardens as its plant kingdom relative, the azalea, says Walter Przypek, a York County master gardener and grower/hybridizer of many rhododendrons in his own gardens. "We can add and retain these plants in our landscape by careful plant selection and proper culture," says Walter. He and master-gardener wife Sybil are on the board of directors for the Middle Atlantic Chapter, American Rhododendron Society. Rhododendrons grow in a wide range of climates in their native lands. Because of this high diversity of native climates, some of these plants will not survive our temperatures, primarily in the summer. In the past, a limited number of adaptable plants were available to local gardeners, and many people tried to grow plants that were not well-suited for our area, with predictable results. In recent years, many new hybrids have been developed for our growing conditions, so it is important to choose rhododendrons by name and variety rather than simply by plant shape and flower color for success, says Walter. [Home] [Climate] [Rhododendron Lake] [Hailey Garden] About The Nanaimo Rhododendron Society The Nanaimo Rhododendron Society was established in September 1992. It is affiliated with the American Rhododendron Society, and is one of nine chapters in British Columbia , including four others on Vancouver Island and four more in the lower mainland. The purpose of the Society is to introduce members and the public to rhododendrons through meetings, garden tours, and flower shows and to provide an opportunity to meet people with similar interests. Our regular monthly meetings include a guest speaker who typically gives a slide show on some aspect of gardening. Members share their experience on how to grow rhododendrons in our climate, including choice of plants, use of fertilizers, pruning, preparing flower trusses for shows, taking cuttings, grafting and growing from seed. Every meeting includes a door prize, a rhododendron raffle, a coffee break where members can mingle, and usually a plant table selling donated rooted cuttings and small plants. Annual membership rates are $30 for singles and $40 for families.

Rhododendrons in the garden
by Tom Hughes
for The Oak Ridger Some of the most beautiful shrubs in the woodlands and gardens of East Tennessee are rhododendrons, but to my mind they are not planted nearly as often as they could be. Planting and care. Rhododendrons grow wild in our mountains and in the cool moist canyons or "gulfs" of the Cumberland Plateau but are not common in the valley woodlands. They are not difficult to grow in the garden, however, if we are mindful of their simple needs: a loose, moist, well-aerated acid (pH ~5) soil containing lots of organic matter, and protection from our hot summer sun. Plant them on the north or east side of the house or other forms of shelter such as evergreen trees. Shallow planting is necessary the near-surface roots can easily be smothered if covered by as little as an inch of soil. But do keep the roots covered with a loose mulch wood chips are excellent. Never let the roots dry out. Established plants usually do well without fertilizer, but for the first 3 or 4 years after planting I give each a scattered handful of cottonseed meal in March and June and water with a solution of Schulz Iron Green once in the spring. Holly-Tone is also a good fertilizer.
