    Kemper Code:
    Common Name: Rhododendron
    Zone: 5 to 8
    Habit: Broadleaf evergreen
    Family: Ericaceae
    Missouri Native: No
    Range: None
    Height: 4 to 6 feet
Spread: 3 to 5 feet Bloom Color: Pink Sun: Full sun to part shade Water: Medium moisture Maintenance: Medium General Culture: Best grown in acidic, humusy, organically rich, moisture retentive but well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Tolerates sun better than most rhododendrons. Plant in a location protected from strong winter winds. Good soil drainage is essential (doesn't like "wet feet"). Poor drainage can cause root rot, therefore raised beds or plantings should be considered in heavy clay soils. Shallow root system (avoid cultivating around shrub) appreciates a good organic mulch (e.g., bark, oak leaves or pine needles) to retain moisture and to stabilize soil temperatures. Roots must never be allowed to dry out. Noteworthy Characteristics: This rhododendron is a Gable hybrid. It is a dense, vigorous, mound-forming, evergreen shrub which typically grows 3-6' tall and as wide. Shiny, dark green foliage. Pink flowers open in late season (May in St. Louis area).

    Family: Ericaceae
    Missouri Native: No
    Range: None
    Height: 2 to 3 feet
Spread: 2 to 3 feet Bloom Color: Reddish-purple Sun: Part shade Water: Medium moisture Maintenance: Medium General Culture: Best grown in acidic, humusy, organically rich, medium wet, moisture-retentive but well-drained soils in part shade. Prefers locations with sun-dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. Avoid hot afternoon sun. Plant in a location sheltered from strong winter winds. Good soil drainage is essential (doesn't like "wet feet"). Poor drainage can cause root rot, therefore raised plantings should be considered in heavy clay soils. Shallow root system (avoid cultivating around shrub) appreciates a good organic mulch (e.g., wood chips, bark, oak leaves or pine needles) to retain moisture and stabilize soil temperatures. Roots must not be allowed to dry out. Noteworthy Characteristics: This evergreen azalea is a Gable hybrid developed and introduced by the late Joseph Gable of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania. It is a dense, spreading, low-to-medium-sized shrub which typically grows 2-3' tall with a similar spread. Glossy, dark green foliage is evergreen. Clusters of medium-sized, reddish-purple flowers, each with a dark purple blotch, appear in spring (April in the St. Louis area).

LIGHT There are many varieties of rhododendron and azalea and they share many care requirements. Be sure to choose a variety that is hardy and suitable for the planting site. Choose a site that gets adequate light and is not directly under trees where there will be root competition for water and nutrients. It is a misconception that rhododendrons and azaleas like to be planted in shade. Many of the varieties thrive in full sun but will tolerate light shade. The more light these plants get the more the flowers produced. Some of these plants will survive in deeper shade but will not flower. The overall appearance of the shrub will be leggier.
