Many EFL teachers are familiar with the type of reading comprehension exercise in which students are required to read the passage and then answer a set of multiple-choice questions. No matter how hard you may try to make this type of reading fun and comprehensible to the learners by brainstorming activities or drawing flowers on the board, you know that, after a while, you may end up with a boring reading class in which your students are not 'reading for comprehension', not 'enjoying themselves', not 'learning new words in context', not 'practicing their grammar', and not 'involved in a communicative and interactive learning activity'. Does all of this sound familiar. If so, you can achieve all of the above and maybe more with this very simple, easy-to-prepare activity.
Preparation
Find an interesting text, which you think may appeal to most of your students such as a joke from a magazine, a brochure about Disneyland, or anything that is colorful and fun. Then, type that passage on a page using large margins so that the text itself is not spread from one end to the other but rather it is squeezed up into a thin column. Make enough copies to go around and then grab a pair of scissors as you go to class.

GRE READING COMPREHENSION
The explanation of the Reading Comprehension question type follows. If you prefer skipping this explanation, scroll down to the Directions immediately before the Sample Questions buttons. Reading comprehension questions measure your ability to read with understanding, insight, and discrimination. This type of question explores your ability to analyze a written passage from several perspectives, including your ability to recognize both explicitly stated elements in the passage and assumptions underlying statements or arguments in the passage as well as the implications of those statements or arguments. Because the written passage upon which the questions are based presents a sustained discussion of a particular topic, there is ample context for analyzing a variety of relationships. Pay attention to the function of a word in relation to a larger segment of the passage, the relationships among the various ideas in the passage, or the relation of the author to the topic or to the audience. There are six types of reading comprehension questions. These types focus on (1) the main idea or primary purpose of the passage; (2) information explicitly stated in the passage; (3) information or ideas implied or suggested by the author; (4) possible applications of the author's ideas to other situations, including the identification of situations or processes analogous to those described in the passage; (5) the author's logic, reasoning, or persuasive techniques; and (6) the tone of the passage or the author's attitude as it is revealed in the language used.

FOCUS on Reading Comprehension Teaching children to read involves more than helping them to recognize the combinations of sounds and letters that make up individual words. Helping them to understand the meaning of words, alone and in combination, is a no less critical part of the process.
In its April 2000 report on the essential components of reading instruction, the U.S. National Reading Panel (NRP) stressed the importance of teaching vocabulary and text comprehension strategies in enabling readers to construct meaning from text. After a thorough review of research in these areas, the panel concluded that
  • No single method of vocabulary instruction is most effective; instead, using a variety of methods leads to increased vocabulary learning.
  • There is a high correlation between vocabulary instruction and reading comprehension.
  • Readers who are instructed in a variety of cognitive strategies make significant gains in reading comprehension.
  • Some comprehension strategies are more effective than others. Teachers who are trained in these strategies can help their students achieve increased levels of comprehension.

Read the following passage carefully for comprehension. This passage is followed by a number of incomplete statements or questions. Select the completion or answer that is best according to the passage. After you have answered the questions, there is a link to a page with the correct answers and rationales.

    Reading Comprehension Instruction for
Students with Learning Disabilities A Research Synthesis
Russell Gersten, Ph.D ., and Scott Baker, Ph.D
Eugene Research Institute, University of Oregon Executive Summary Background and Purpose
    • Successful reading comprehension is correlated with oral reading fluency and vocabulary knowledge. However, interventions that focus on improving fluency or vocabulary do not necessarily increase reading comprehension, especially of long passages.
    • Students with LD often show signs of giving up too quickly when faced with a difficult passage. This so-called task persistence, a skill that must be acquired by all readers, is especially important for successful reading of expository text, such as history and science textbooks, newspapers, and voter pamphlets.
    • Children with LD, who have a history of academic difficulties, have documented gaps in grade-appropriate knowledge of history, geography, and other subjects. These knowledge gaps interfere with their understanding of material they encounter in new texts and compound their reading comprehension problems.

Posted to ACW-L, WCenter, NCTE-Talk, and TEACH on 01/10/99.
After an extended holiday break, I'm back with another list. These reading comprehension activities focus students' attention on the various ways of reading a text, with an eye toward helping them differentiate among skills such as comprehension, summary, interpretation, and analysis. As I wrote these items, I was thinking exercises that I might use with students to prepare them for standardized testing (e.g., Texas' TAAS or the NY Regents Exam). These exercises alone won't prepare them for the test, but I think that the discussion that could ensue from completing more than one of these exercises on a text and talking about the skills that were used could help students become more knowledgeable about the ways that they can think about something that they read. Then I'd ask students to think about which skills relate to which questions on the tests.
