Them, How to Deal With Them ~ by Rebecca Stillwell Fear is a typical first response exhibited by many people encountering a snake in the wild, or in the yard, shed, basement, etc. The next response is often to reach for a shovel with which to quickly dispatch the presumably poisonous, evil creature. Knowing a little about Ohio’s native snakes is the first step to eliminating (or at least, reducing) this fearful, knee-jerk reaction, and can help us appreciate their role as beneficial participants in Nature’s “grand scheme.” In Ohio we enjoy about 30 native snake species, and of these only three are venomous. These are the northern copperhead ( Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen ), the timber rattlesnake ( Crotalus horridus horridus ), and the eastern massasauga rattlesnake ( Sistrurus catenatus catenatus ). All three of these snakes belong to the group of snakes known as pit vipers, so named because of the heat-sensing organ that appears as a small hole between each eye and nostril. These sensory pits help the snakes locate small, warm-blooded prey (such as moles, chipmunks, rats, mice, etc.) at night or while foraging in low-light areas, such as under logs and rocky outcroppings. It is unwise, however, to search for the presence of sensory pits to determine whether a snake is venomous. If you can actually see the pit, you are certainly standing

When I was nine years of age, I heard a story from a trusted adult who had witnessed a snake beating her grandfather with its tail. Each lash mark reportedly caused the elderly man's flesh to rot. Black rat snakes live in a wide variety of habitats: rocky, wooded hillsides, wooded areas along rivers, in or near farm buildings. This species is well known for its ability to climb trees. Black rat snakes eat rodents, birds and birds' eggs. They kill their prey by constriction. Farmers are well aware of the value of black rat snakes in controlling destructive rodents. A herpetologist at the University of Kansas' Natural History Museum, Rundquist spent two days in intensive care after being bitten by a diamondback rattler found by graduate students near Kanopolis. Western diamondback rattlers aren't native to Kansas and Rundquist thinks it should be illegal to bring them into the state. Each of the past four years, a bill that would make it illegal to import or release non-native venomous snakes in the state has died in legislative committee. "We're not saying this is a huge problem, but with a little forethought maybe we could prevent this," Rundquist said. Considered by some experts to be the most dangerous snakes in North America, western diamondback rattlers have a natural range that extends only to northern Oklahoma. But in recent years, they have been spotted along nature trails at Kanopolis State Park in central Kansas. And some Texans may think that the drought has reduced their numbers. Think again. Texas Agricultural Extension Service experts say snake populations are very resilient to drought conditions, and some snakes may actually be among the few to benefit from the hot and dry weather. Because large snakes can survive without a meal for five to six months, hot and dry weather does not affect them as severely as other Texas wildlife. Extension herpetologist Neil Wilkins said some of the Texas snake populations may have actually grown as a result of the drought. "Snakes are very long-lived animals, but some of the smaller species need more food more often," he said. "Because this year we had a boom in grasshopper numbers, some of the smaller snakes' populations that eat grasshoppers and other snakes boomed also. As you see an increase in one species, though, you also see a decrease in other species. That's why it's possible to have a population increase in drought times." Wilkins said there is no way to monitor snakes' exact numbers in a long-term scenario, but experts do know that the numbers fluctuate.
