INDIAN PYTHON India Unknown Throughout history, humans have regarded snakes with both fascination and horror. In many cultures, snakes have been symbols of evil, from the Biblical serpent in the Garden of Eden to the snake demons of Indian mythology. To the ancient Egyptians the emblem of judgment and death was a snake. Snakes are found in most habitats worldwide except in extreme northern and southern regions. Snakes come in multitudes of sizes and colors with as many varied lifestyles, from deadly King cobras whose bite can kill a human in 15 minutes, to the world's tiniest West Indies thread snakes, about the size of a pencil lead. Snakes are reptiles, the group of animals that also includes crocodiles, lizards, and turtles. The now-legless snakes evolved millions of years ago from prehistoric lizards that lived at the same time as the dinosaurs. Pythons are the most ancient type of snake; they have remnant spurs, tiny projections where their ancestors might once have had legs.
Species Description and Natural History
The Indian python is a highly arboreal snake, once fairly common throughout the jungles of India, Sri Lanka, and the East Indies. It can grow to a length of about 20 feet (6 m).

The African Rock Python is a large, constricting snake that lives in sub-Saharan Africa. The adult African Rock Python's main predator is man; it is killed for its beautiful skin, meat, and fat (used in tribal medicines). Other predators include crocodiles, badgers, and mongooses. The scientific name of the African Rock Python is Python sebae sebae Genus species , and subspecies Anatomy : Like all snakes, pythons are cold-blooded; they are the same temperature as the environment. They continue to grow all their lives, getting bigger and bigger each year. African Rock Python average 18 to 20 feet long, but can grow up to 28 feet (8.5 m) long. Their scaly skin glistens but is dry is to the touch. African Rock Pythons are tan with brown spots that have black outlines. A tan V-shape marks the face. The python smells using its tongue. This snake has has no fangs. It uses heat sensing organs in its upper and lower jaws to detect warm-blooded prey (like mammals). Hunting and Diet : Pythons are carnivores (meat-eaters). Pythons are not venomous, they kill by constricting (squeezing) the prey it until it can no longer breathe. Like all snakes, they swallow the prey whole, head first. The python's top and bottom jaws are attached to each other with stretchy ligaments, which let the snake swallow animals wider that itself. Snakes don't chew their food, it is digested by very strong acids in the snake's stomach. The African Rock Python eats monkeys, pigs, deer, small apes, birds, and other animals. After eating a large animal, the python needs no food for a long time, and may rest for weeks. In this engorged state, it is most vulnerable to attack by predators.

Though they can be docile animals, especially if handled often from a young age, the Burmese Python can also be quite aggressive and very dangerous. There are a large number of homeless Burmese Pythons in the United States because people do not realize the responsibility of keeping a giant Python. Ownership of a Burmese Python is not something to be entered into lightly. The Burmese Python can be found on Asia and surrounding islands. They are semi-aquatic, meaning they spend quite a lot of their time in water. The Burmese Python feeds on birds, reptiles, frogs, fish, and mammals in the wild. Because of the very flexible jaw of the Burmese Python, they can swallow things several times the size of their head. Burmese Pythons find their prey using their excellent sense of smell along with the heat sensors along their upper lips. When handled from a young age, the Burmese Python can be quite tolerant of handling. Burmese Pythons must be handled regularly, even as they grow quite large, to remain tame. When handling a Burmese Python, especially a larger one, more than one person should be present. Burmese Pythons are diurnal, meaning they are active during the day. They spend most of the day basking in the sun.

Queensland Museum exhibits can be seen throughout the State. This skeletal display prepared by Queensland Museum for Australia Zoo, shows a Reticulated Python attacking a pig
Reticulated Python Python reticulatus (Schneider, 1801)
The Reticulated Python is the longest snake in the world. Widespread and common in South-east Asia, it is not found in Australia except in zoo collections. The largest specimen known measured 10.1m. Pythons, like most snakes, can prey on animals that look too big to swallow whole. To a large Reticulated Python, a pig is 'chicken-feed'! Pythons are non-venomous. They bite and hold their prey with sharp, curved teeth, then whip body coils around the animal to constrict and suffocate it. This collapses the prey's chest, deflates its lungs and compresses its heart. Large animals are easily swallowed because the bones of a python's skull are loosely articulated and its skin, neck and gut muscles stretch easily.

1-800-659-SKULL The class Reptilia is divided into four orders: Turtles Lizards and Snakes Crocodiles , and the Tuatara . The living reptiles are comprised of Turtles (order Chelonia) about 250 species; the Lizards and Snakes (order Squamata) about 5700 species; the Crocodilians (order Crocodylia), about 21 species; and the Tuatara (order Rhynchocephalia) only one species. Reptiles are cold blooded vertebrate animals. Many characteristics define Reptiles, some of which are dry scaled skin, internal fertilization, and three to four chambered hearts. They inhabit many environments. But most, channeled by cold bloodedness, are confined to warmer habitats. Reptiles may be aquatic, semi-aquatic or terrestrial, as well as arboreal. Reptiles range in size considerably. The longest reptile is the Reticulated Python, reaching 33 feet in length. The heaviest living reptile is the Leather Back Sea Turtle, which has attained 1,600 pounds in weight. The smallest Reptile is possibly the Dwarf Gecko that reaches only about 1.3 inches in length. The Reptilian skull ranges from the reduced, loosely joined, or kinetic skull of snakes to the large, solid skull of the crocodiles. One characteristic identifying a Reptile skull is a single ball-and-socket connection (condyle) at the head-neck joint instead of two, as in mammals, and an incomplete or complete partition (the secondary palate) along the roof of the mouth, separating the food and air passageways so that breathing can continue while the food is being chewed.

If you are having trouble keeping your aquarium tanks with the screened lid humid enough try covering the top with aluminum foil. If you use a heat light cover the part that the light is not resting on. This will keep the humidity higher especially if you put the water bowl under the foil side.

These retics are 66% possible heterozygous for lavender albino. These babies are result of breeding the original albino retic to a female from the dwarf population on the Indonesian island of Jampea. The F1 heterozygous animals are small, even as mature breeding adults. The male parent weighs 7 kg and the female is under 12 kg both very manageable. The hatchlins weigh only 50% of the weight of mainland babies.

Native Snakes Several pythons native to Australia can be found lazing about at the Australia Zoo. Bert and Ernie , two black-headed pythons, are both 8 years old. They are very quiet and well-behaved, traits not often associated with wild black-headed pythons, which can be quite aggressive. Black-headed pythons live in the dry coastal forests, rocky hills and peripheral desert regions of northern Australia. They are commonly found sheltering in burrows, hollow logs and beneath ground debris. Emerald and Kato , the zoo's green tree pythons, are both 4 years of age. They are very shy and secretive, and do not like to be disturbed. Green tree pythons live in a variety of wooded habitats in northeast Australia, including rainforests and bamboo thickets. They are the most arboreal of all the pythons, spending the majority of their lives in trees. With tight, muscular coils and a prehensile tail, the green tree python can wrap itself tightly around a branch, its vivid green skin melting in with the surrounding leaves. It both rests and hunts from the same position: coiled around a branch with its head hanging down, ready to strike at prey.

Super Tiger Reticulated python General description: The largest of the pythons, this is a long and relatively slender snake. Large specimens can attain considerable mass and bulk, specimens over 300 pounds are reported. The record length slightly exceeds 33 feet. Retics (as they are known) have big heads that are distinctly wider than the necks. Most specimens have orange eyes. Most specimens have pale dorsal blotches on the back, and smaller white lateral blotches high on the sides. This is a highly iridescent species. This is an extremely variable species with considerable geographic variation in appearance. There have been more unique snakes with unusual and anomalous appearances in this species than any other.
Average adult size: Distribution: This is the most widespread python species in the world. Its distribution includes coastal Southeast Asia, from Burma and the Nicobar Island east to Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia, and most of the islands of the Philippines and Indonesia. The species is not known to occur on New Guinea, but does occur on most or all of the Moluccan islands.

Editor's note: You would never suspicion that this delicate, church-going grandmother of eight once raised and breeded pythons, drove a tanker truck, and worked as an armed security guard at Focus on the Family for Dr. James Dobson. She later became Chief of Security over several Pioneer Electronic plants. You will enjoy her story. In 1976, while working as a teacher's aide and going to school for a teaching certificate, I found I didn't like large groups of children. At this time I became divorced and needed a jobfast! I went to work for Guardsmark Inc. as a guard. I worked my way up to a supervisory position but wanted more money. Solution? Raise and sell Burmese pythons.
