The Python Programming Language
Python is an interpreted, interactive, object-oriented programming language. It incorporates modules, exceptions, dynamic typing, very high level dynamic data types, and classes. Python combines remarkable power with very clear syntax. It has interfaces to many system calls and libraries, as well as to various window systems, and is extensible in C or C++. It is also usable as an extension language for applications that need a programmable interface. Finally, Python is portable: it runs on many brands of UNIX, on the Mac, and on MS-DOS. The full Python documentation is on-line as hypertext: Tutorial Language Reference Library Reference , and Extensions Manual . Perl and Tcl programmers may first want to have a look at a testimonial by a convert . And of course there's a FAQ list (and a hypertext version of it by Skip Montanaro). Source and documentation , as well as binaries for Macintosh and DOS are available by anonymous ftp from several sites:
  • ftp.cwi.nl (192.16.184.180) in Europe its home site; in /pub/python

Please DiscussPythonProgrammingOnWinThirtyTwo Briefly put: A good book which I really recommend to anybody who intends to write Python programs on the Windows platform. Unfortunately the book feels slightly like a beta, not quite debugged. Python Programming on Win32 was a good read. It taught me things about Python that has nothing to do with Windows. (E.g. introducing PiddleAPI and PDFgen, and teaching me more on ODBC etc.) It also taught me new things about Windows that are totally unrelated to Python. (E.g. about COM and various MS database APIs.) Still it had annoying features as well. It's not very well proof read, and today (2000-10-30) there are 16 unconfirmed (but most likely correct) bug reports at O'Reilly's web site . These have neither been confirmed, nor included in the latest reprint. I also found another bug. What's this sentence supposed to mean? Here are some notes on using Python. Additional information can be found at Python.org , the home of Python. One of the coolest little Python software out there is the edna MP3 server. It really shows what can be done in Python. Edna also contains my first open source software work, even if it is a tiny tiny bit of a patch to the software !
    What's cool about Python
    • It supports strings, tuples and lists (sequence) as basic data types
    • It uses source code indentation to define program blocks. This seems like a really bad idea to start, but it ends up enforcing standardize well formatted source file.
    • You can say "if 1 < x
    • You can say "a = b = 3"
    • You can say "a,b = b,a"

    History
Python is a very new language; in fact it was released by its designer, Guido Van Rossum, in February 1991 while working for CWI also known as Stichting Mathematisch Centrum. Many of Python's features originated from an interpreted language called ABC. Rossum wanted to correct some of ABC's problems and keep some of its features. At the time he was working on the Amoeba distributed operating system group and was looking for a scripting language with a syntax like ABC but with the access to the Amoeba system calls, so he decided to create a language that was generally extensible. Since he had some experience with using Modula-2+, he decided to talk with the designers of Modula-3. Modula-3 is the origin of the syntax and semantics used for exceptions, and some other Python features. In 1989, during the Christmas holidays, he decided to give it a try and design a language which he later called Python. Just in case you're wondering how the language got its name, well it's not from those dangerous reptiles. Python actually got is name from a BBC comedy series from the seventies "Monty Python's Flying Circus". The designer needed a name that was short, unique, and slightly mysterious. Since he was a fan of the show he thought this name was great.

Book Review Core Python Programming by Wesley Chun
Recommended ISBN: Publisher: Prentice Hall Pages: Price: Categories: python Reviewed by Francis Glassborow in C Vu 13-2 (Apr 2001) Reviewing books on Python is much harder for me than reviewing books on C or C++. In the latter cases I can quickly determine the author's technical proficiency and if a book fails that test, the question is whether there are some redeeming features that make it worth encouraging the author to revise the book, or should I just commit it to the waste bin. Harsh, I know, but we have enough good books on C and C++ so that we should not be encouraging bad authors to waste resources, both theirs and ours. Now, I am just struggling to learn Python and it will probably take me a good while to get a firm grasp of it, so I must assume, within reason, that the author is technically correct. If I am wrong, and you, as the reader of this review know that I am, please make an extra effort to write your own review and send it to me (editoraccu.org). It is only in this way that I can afford to have a provisional opinion on a book such as this one. First a few details. The book comes with a CD that includes the source and binaries of all the current releases (well, that is up to 2.0, though 2.1 is now in beta). It also includes JPython 1.1 as well as the source from this book, the latest FAQ for Python as well as various other extras.

Python is open-source software which is available for free. The language is over ten years old. The language itself is written in ANSI C and can be compiled and run on almost every operating system. Python works as a nice middle language with existing routines written in various languages. The language also supports useful forms of data structures that speed the development process. The developers of Python have produced an language that can offer up easy-to-read code, but it still has some very useful and complex functionality.

It's also free and runs portably on Windows, Mac OS, Unix, and other operating systems. Python can be used for all manner of programming tasks, from CGI scripts to full-fledged applications. It is gaining popularity among programmers in part because it is easier to read (and hence, debug) than most other programming languages, and it's generally simpler to install, learn, and use. Its line structure forces consistent indentation. Its syntax and semantics make it suitable for simple scripts and large programs. Its flexible data structures and dynamic typing allow you to get a lot done in a few lines. To learn it, you'll need is some basic programming experience and a copy of Python: Visual QuickStart Guide.

    Python Programming on Win 32
    Hits: 984
    Description:
Python Programming on Win32 is the first book to demonstrate how to use it as a serious Windows development and administration tool. Unlike scripting on Unix, Windows scripting involves integrating a number of components, such as COM or the various mail and database APIs, with the Win32 programming interface. While experienced Windows C++ programmers can find their way through the various objects, most people need some guidance, and this book is it. It addresses all the basic technologies for common integration tasks on Windows, explaining both the Windows issues and the Python code you need to glue things together. Topics covered: Python programming quick-start, Windows Python basics, Python support for COM/DCOM, the Pythonwin editor, Office 2000 scripting, Windows NT administration and system programming, Python MFC programming, and Active Scripting.
