Skates, tricycles, toy trucks and cars, wagons and balls are among children's favorite playthings. But in one year, according to U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates, there were 150,000 toy-related injuries serious enough to require hospital emergency room treatment. Falls are the most frequent kind of accident, but many serious injuries result from children swallowing small parts or placing tiny toys in noses or ears, from exploding gas-powered toys, from flammable products, and from sharp edges.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in children in the United States! This horrible statistic is made worse when we discover that 75% of child fatalities and 50% of child injuries could be eliminated with the consistent and correct use of child safety seats and safety belts! Educate yourself about your responsibility as a caregiver/parent to provide the children in your care with the protection that law and common sense dictate. When you drive with children in the car, children must be in safety seats and belts and in them correctly! Whether you have a front passenger side air bag in your vehicle or not, remember that children are always safer in the back seat.

Safety Hardware Resources
As technology becomes a bigger part of children's lives, so does the need to pay attention to the health issues of using computers. Children need to be taught simple safety principles from the time they begin using computers. Don't overlook the obvious when children use computers:
  • Don't sit too close to the monitor Take frequent rest breaks and "eye breaks" Stand up, stretch and wiggle often Blink frequently Avoid using the mouse for long periods of time
For children as well as adults, bad posture can cause sore wrists, eye fatigue, headaches, neck strain and even back pain. Since kids may be using computers both at home and at school, there is the potential for problems to develop over time. To prevent eye problems avoid flickering lights or glare on the screen, and look away from the monitor frequently. (This is true for video games also.) Get up and walk around (moving around rests both the eyes and the body), focus on a distant object, remember not to stare at the screen, and blink often.

28. Teaching Preschoolers To Be Fire Safe

Teaching Preschoolers to be Fire Safe
Chilren at risk
Tragically, children five years of age and younger are more than twice as likely to die in fires as are older children and adults. Most fire fatalities involving preschool children fall into four categories.
  • Fires that preschool children start.
  • Fires started by heating or electrical systems equipment.
  • Fires caused by the careless use of smoking materials.
  • Fires that are set intentionally (arson fires).
Preschool and kindergarten teachers and parents can make an important difference by teaching fire safety in a way that young children can understand. It's a proven fact that providing these lessons early can save lives. To work, a preschool fire safety program should involve both the children and their parents. Through the activities described in this brochure, young children can encourage the adults in their households to be aware of home fire hazards and to know what to do if there is a fire.
Match and lighter saftey
Each year, many fires are started by children playing with matches or lighters. Young children should learn that matches and lighters can get hot and hurt children and that they are for grown-ups only.

Types of Child Care
In New York City, child care is defined as any service which provides care on a regular basis. The total number of children receiving care are to be counted, including the children or foster children of the owner or care giver in charge, and the children of other staff members or volunteers if the children will be on the premises at any time. In other parts of New York State, children who attend kindergarten or a grade level higher than kindergarten are not counted if they are in the legal custody of or boarded out with the care provider. There are generally four types of child care services offered for preschool aged children: 1) Informal Care
2) Family Day Care Homes
3) Group Family Day Care Homes
4) Day Care Centers (Day Care Centers may also offer special services such as "night care" or "infant care.") The difference between the four types of centers is based on the number of children receiving care and whether the care is provided in a personal residence or commercial location. A commercial location is any place other than a personal residence. This includes employer, or university-sponsored day care programs.
