This question was prompted by requests by church members for music lessons for their children. A dream of group classes for guitar, band, orchestra, and preschool music classes grew from those requests. After permission was granted, a notice was printed in the Midvale Park Homeowners' newsletter that Rhythm by the Riverside classes were open for enrollment. The first students were piano students, beginning in March, 1995. By that summer, guitar was also offered and a small beginning band class began with the first band concert played that summer. By the summer of 1998, there were also keyboard classes, guitar and orchestra classes, preschool music and

music lessons, far exceeded the spatial reasoning performance of a demographicallycomparable group of 15 preschool children who did not receive music lessons.

WHY MUSIC?
  • Music lessons, and even simply listening to music, can enhance spatial reasoning performance. The new findings were presented by psychologist Frances Rauscher, Ph.D. and neuroscientist Gordon Shaw, Ph.D., representing a research team from the University of California at Irvine. Spatial reasoning performance of 19 preschool children who received eight months of music lessons, far exceeded the spatial reasoning performance of a demographically comparable group of 15 preschool children who did not receive music lessons. The Mozart Effect surfaced about four years ago when research uncovered that adults who listened to music of complexity (Mozart's Piano Sonata K 448) for ten minutes or so experienced temporary increases in their spatial IQ scores. Music training specifically piano instruction is far superior to computer instruction in dramatically enhancing children's abstract reasoning skills necessary for learning math and science. Music uniquely enhances higher brain functions required for mathematics, chess, science and engineering. The experiment included three groups of preschoolers: one group received private piano/keyboard lessons and singing lessons; a second group received private computer lessons; and a third group received no training. Those children who received piano/keyboard training performed 34% higher on tests measuring spatial-temporal ability than the others.

Preschool Music
EXPLORING MUSIC I, II

Young children learn to experience and experiment with the elements of music. Singing games, rhythmic and creative activities, listening, playing classroom instruments, movement, and preparation for music reading lead the children through the gradual steps of learning and enjoying music. (Ages 4, 5 and 6 year-olds who are not in the first grade).
Your child will receive an introduction to the piano through singing, moving, chanting and playing songs. By creating, improvising and playing pieces, children experience the joys of making their own music on the piano in an age-appropriate manner. Students must have an instrument in their home to practice on. (5 and 6 year olds who are currently in kindergarten).

Music Lessons for 3 1/2 year old?
Feb 2002 My daughter is 3 and 1/2 years old and I am considering starting her with some kind of music lessons, but since I did not grow up in this country I have very little idea of the right age to start children in music, or which instrument is preferred by children (we cannot buy a piano). Someone suggested violin lessons, Suzuki method to me. Any thoughts, experiences or suggestions would be welcome. Thank you. Richa I'm not sure there is a ''right'' age to start children in music lessons because each child is different. I do believe 3 1/2 is a bit early for music lessons that will be tightly structured, but not too young for experimentation with various intruments. Structured music lessons at such a young age can sometimes make a child lose interest in playing his/her instrument. I have known many 7-8 year olds who have been forced into lessons, are good at their instruments, but don't really enjoy playing. As a result, they give it up when they are old enough to have a say. Musical Mom Here is my experience : I have 3 kids who started music lessons at a different age. The older one started at 7 1/2, the middle one at 6 and the youngest at 4. They all study the piano in a small group setting, the school is called ''do re mi''. We do not have a piano, just a keyboard, which was purchased for just a $100. Now the results : the older one took off very fast, jumped a class and is learning very easily, the middle one is doing good, and the little one is moving along with her class mates, who are all the same age, but it will take her twice as long to reach her older brother level. But I must admit that it is cute to see her play, and the teacher uses a method that makes it very easy for young children to understand the notes, their place and value. So my recommandation? I do not have any! a mother of 3

    Part Three

The Art of Music By Shel Franco Six bare-foot preschoolers fidget on the checkered rug. A soft-spoken blonde sits cross-legged at the front of the room. She smiles at the children and begins to sing. All at once, the room is alive. Eyes are twinkling. Hands are clapping. And before the song is over, six bare-foot preschoolers are singing, too. So went my son's very first preschool music class. For a music lover like me, the experience warmed my heart and touched my senses. It was hard not to enjoy the music mixed with laughter. But I learned something else, something that could only be taught by my curious 3-year-old son and an excited preschool music class: music plays an important, if not critical, role in a preschooler's life. The Importance of Music
Why is it so important to expose a child to music? For one thing, the exposure might be intellectually stimulating. "Beginning in the mid-90s the country was a-buzz with the research that there is a certain window of opportunity for the musical neurons to be connected," says Rachel Kramer, assistant executive director for Programs and Convention for Music Teachers National Association, in Cincinnati, Ohio. "Introducing music to children before the age of 3 would solidify this connection, and that connecting these neurons would in fact, increase the spatial reasoning capabilities of a child." The importance of music in a child's life can be much less dramatic than increasing intelligence, but even more meaningful. Kramer, who is also the owner of the Baldwin Music Education Center, a 36-year-old preschool music program, says that exposure to music and participation in preschool music classes help a child to develop self-expression and social skills, not to mention the foundations for later musical instruction: keeping a steady beat and matching pitch.

    Choosing Age-Appropriate Instruments
    and a Good Instructor
Two factors are critical to the likelihood of your child's achievement: choosing the right instrument and the right instructor.
    by Stephen F. Zdzinski
The right instruments at the right ages
Choices of instruments for young children are based purely on physical development, which is why keyboard and percussion instruments are a good fit beginning at preschool age. Preschool music programs can develop skills that will transfer to future study, including pitch recognition (Are the sounds high or low?), steady beat (tapping sticks, for example, as the music plays), musical timbre (What makes a drum and clarinet sound different?), and musical forms (responding to music that sounds like a march versus music that sounds like a lullaby). Transitioning to formal lessons by age of 5 or 6, typically, children begin "formal" musical training on the piano. They learn the fundamental theoretical concepts that can easily be transferred to another instrument. The piano also is the only instrument that requires one to read both clefts of music, whereas music for the flute is written for one cleft and the trombone uses the other.
