What is PREP? PREP means Preschool Readiness Education for Parents and children School districts in Ford and Iroquois counties have joined together to offer free preschool opportunities to eligible children and their families.  Many young children in Illinois are not ready for kindergarten, even though they are old enough to go.  Illinois has seen this problem and has provided funds to help find and then to serve these children and families. PREP is our counties’ preschool program.  Classroom activities, field trips, family learning opportunities, and home visits are provided.  PREP offers things all children need as well as help in those areas your child needs.

How to Incorporate Science into your Early Childhood Classroom

Resources for Educators

Introduction of S.A.M.E. Network In 1992, Reginald "Hats" Adams, President and CEO of the Science and Math Excellence (S.A.M.E.) Network at Rush-Presbyterian - St. Luke's Medical Center ( http://www.rush.edu/general/communityaffairs/science_math.html ), had a vision that children on Chicago's West Side should have the same kind of education opportunities that children in affluent suburbs have. S.A.M.E. Network's mission is to ensure that superior science and math education is provided to children who reside on the West Side of Chicago. S.A.M.E.'s mission is met by using a combination of classroom and extracurricular programs to improve children's skills while exposing them to a wider variety of potential career paths. S.A.M.E. is a coalition of a leading academic health care institution, public and independent schools, businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and community groups. S.A.M.E. is fortunate to partner with Chicago Public Schools in providing this important foundation in a child's education. Dr. Cozette Buckney, Liaison to Board President and CEO of Chicago Public Schools, has provided invaluable support to this and other S.A.M.E. program initiatives.

Play and Learn with Cereal O's:
Simple, Effective Activities to Help You Educate Your Preschool Child

Talita Paolini and Kenneth Paolini
ISBN: 0-9666213-2-8
108 pages
Paperback
Here are two chapters from the book, the Preface and Tower Power (chapter 18). Preface A Vision of Hope for Our Children Two years later, Angela was born. By the age of three, both children were doing first-grade work. Kenneth and I had a choice. We could either put our children in school with students their own age and have them intellectually bored, or we could continue to school them at home. We chose to homeschool through grade twelve. Christopher took the SAT test soon after high school graduation at age fourteen. His high scores confirmed we had done our job well. Not yet ready to leave home and attend college, he began writing a 400-page fantasy novel that will be published this year. Angela is completing her senior year in high school and has outlined her first book about the native plants of Montana. Both children trace their love of learning back to activities they did with Kenneth and me when they were very young. Whether you are a busy parent frustrated by a lack of time, a parent wondering how to teach your child, a home-schooling parent, a caretaker of young children, a grandparent who watches youngsters, or a preschool teacher looking for new ideas for the classroom or projects to send home with students, this book is for you.

Pre-K-2 Students Play and Learn Online
This week, Education World searched the Web for engaging and safe sites offering learning games for pre-K-2 students. The sites below fill the bill whether you looking for a learning center activity or just an activity for yet another indoor recess. Included: Ten pre-K-2 game sites that don't drown them in ads. Do you hate online games? Me too! Sure, they're fascinating and kids love them and, oh, the things they can do! but you just never know what kind of ad is going to pop up on even the most innocent-looking site. You never know what "contest" a kid will be seduced into entering, or what virus a student might download unwittingly. Little ones especially have trouble distinguishing between the ads and the games. And yet … And yet … the power of the media in those games to engage students, and the interactivity they allow, are such great teaching, tutoring, and practice tools! It's a shame not to make use of them. This week, therefore, Education World searched the Web for engaging, interactive and safe sites that offer learning games for your youngest students. The ten sites below represent some of the best we found. Not all the sites are ad-free although most are but all the games are. So keep them in mind when you're looking for a learning center activity, a review or practice activity or just a fun activity for yet

Pre-School Science Skills Collecting Observing Estimating Measuring ... Problem-Solving Everyday Activities Pre-school science starts at home, as does every other early learning experience. Here are some suggestions on developing basic science skills at home. Collecting
Most kids have a lot of something, whether it's magnets, pens, toy cars, or rocks. Encourage your child to view these things as a collection of items and have them on display or kept in a box for easy show and tell. Your children will be proud of their collections and will get a thrill out of finding more items to add to it every day. Share your collections with your child also. Most people are natural collectors of something, even if it is shoes! Observing
Kids notice everything and ask a lot of questions. Your child may one day say, "The paper carrier didn't come today." When you had no idea she even knew you had a paper carrier. Teaching your child to observe things will be easy. All you need to do is direct them towards something to observe. The seasons of the year are a good start. If you live in warm climates watch the news for signs of the seasons. Try to observe things that are around your home. Observe the birds in your yard, the dog next door, a banana as it turns brown, or even the routine of a parent. Estimating
How many potatoes will it take to fill up this bowl? How many cups of water to fill up this pitcher? How many cookies are in the jar. How many steps will it take to get to bed. These are some good examples of estimating games. See if you can think of some more.

    The auditory learner

    Preschool to Kindergarten
by S. Jhoanna Robledo What's below: What is an auditory learner? What are the benefits of knowing my child's learning style? What can I do to help my auditory child excel at preschool and kindergarten? How can I address my auditory child's weaknesses in other areas? ... Where can I get more information about learning styles? What is an auditory learner?
Auditory learners understand new ideas and concepts best when they hear the information. If you peek into a classroom, they're the ones who learn a tune in a snap just from hearing their teacher sing it, or who can follow directions to the letter after being told only once or twice what to do. Other auditory learners concentrate better at a task when they have music or white noise in the background, or retain new information better when they talk it out. If you haven't already, take our learning styles quiz to find out for sure if your child is an auditory learner. What are the benefits of knowing my child's learning style?

"The articles are readable, concise and full of ideas. Parents, teachers, and child care providers can easily look up an area of interest. They will find a theoretical discussion about the issue with practical ideas for dealing with it.... This is the beauty of the book. It identifies what toddlers and preschoolers need to be learning in preparation for school. It draws from the everyday activities that go on in home or in preschool settings.
