A Special Note from Bill Waldren February 2002 Welcome! An international conference, World Islands in Prehistory 2001, will be held from the 13th to 18th of September, 2001 . It will take place on the Spanish Balearic Island of Mallorca high in the island's northern Jurassic Sierras in the picturesque, coastal, mountain village of Deia and the site of three former published international conferences. Introduction Islands are idiosyncratic by nature , showing great variability in material resources, in the life forms and human societies they nurtured and developed throughout time. Their inherent and immense variability in size, geographic location and mainland proximity, geology and natural resources guarantees their individuality. Islands are also places of paradox in that, despite their variability, they share common, unwritten, almost irrevocable natural laws which control and shape their destinies. In turn these are often quite different from mainland situations. They are inhabited by mainly predator-less, limited animal populations that are often highly specialized and oddly modified in function. Dwarfism of the macrofauna, giantism of the microfauna and such phenomena as flightless birds are some of the adaptations found quite commonly throughout the islands of the world. In turn, these evolutionary processes and mechanisms of change and adaptation are controlled by forces, for need of a better definition, largely flotsam and jetsam in nature, where island population and outside influences arrive sporadically from many different directions, either by accident or design.

Land Bridge to the New World
Prehistory
Between roughly 80 000 and 12 000 years ago, a massive glacier covered much of what is now Canada and the United States. An expanse of land then connecting Alaska and Siberia was eventually covered by water as the great icecap melted, and Bering Strait grew to separate North America from the Asian continent. The first to cross this land bridge were ancestors of the Paleo-Indian peoples big-game hunters following their prey. It is thought that upon their arrival to the North American continent, these hunters continued through a corridor of land that had been left exposed between two sections of the icecap. When exactly between 20 000 and 12 000 years ago this migration occurred is much debated among specialists. While the land-bridge theory is almost universally accepted, some believe that the first travellers to North America may have come by water. There is presently no solid evidence to support this.

Final exam study guide is under Handouts
How to make the fun Chavín website work (after finals!)
What's here on "Internet Reserve"?
  • First, there is the News Section , where you will find reading and web assignments, due dates, changes to the course schedule, test information, and other nitty-gritty stuff that you will need.
  • The same class notes that you can borrow from the library reserve desk are available electronically from the Class Notes List below. These are the raw, personal notes that I use for each class. They may not be complete or intelligible on their own, but some people find them useful as study aids.
  • Any papers that I hand out in class, such as the syllabus, study guides, and details about the assignments, are also available here from the Handouts List below.
  • Finally, there are links to other web pages about archaeological regions, sites, periods, and problems relevent to to course. Some of these will also appear in the News section as required reading (and viewing), while others are completely optional. Some are collections of archaeological links that may be useful for your class presentations and research paper. All are highly recommended, and many are fun.
The easy way to view and print lecture notes
Go to the Lecture Notes List below. Click on the "View on screen" option for the lecture notes you want. You will see the notes on screen and can print them in a slightly clunky format.

PHILIPPINE COMMONWEALTH IN TARLAC VI. THE JAPANESE PERIOD IN TARLAC Go to Top "History is a guide that nourishes our present and prepares us for the future." Gen. Francisco Makabulos "History is the yardstick of our struggle for independence." Servillano Aquino P REFACE This book project is made possible by the joint support of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Tarlac and the Provincial School Board. I sincerely thank all the officials and members of these two agencies for funding the research and printing of this book -a fitting response to the national clamor for more local histories to commemorate the centennial of the Philippine Revolution and the declaration of Philippine Independence. Initially, the book was to cover the whole history of Tarlac but due to the limited time for research and writing, it can only cover the period from Prehistory to World War II. Hopefully a second volume, possibly next year, could tackle the rest of the period from World War II to the present. Most of my sources are from the National Archives especially for the Spanish colonial period. I also used a variety of secondary sources including a few interviews of Tarlac's old folks and, whenever possible, descendants of heroes of the Revolution in the province.

The PREMIER JOURNEY to The Ancient World, weaving together the Peoples of those lands and civilizations and the way they lived and - their thoughts, their hopes, their dreams, their lives.
What is the Ancient World? Greece, Rome, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Sumer, Nubia, Persia, Byzantium, Turkey? Or is it Assyrians, Chaldeans, Hebrews, Hittites, Akkadians, Etruscans, Minoans? Is it Alexander, Plato, Virgil, Socrates, Hammurabi, Aristotle, Nefertiti, the Pharaohs, Emperors, Caesar, Cleopatra, Sargon, Akhenaton, the Black Athena, Homer? Or is it the dinosaurs, Stonehenge, hunters, slaves, women, rulers, soldiers, or the Iliad, the Aeneid, the Odyssey, the Olympics? Is it found in the ruins, temples, forums, pyramids or in the remnants of ordinary life? Explore through this Web Book and the Online College Course. Ancient Civilization did not begin in what we think of as the West. It did not start in Paris or Berlin or London or Prague or Brussels or Stockholm. It grew out of the Mediterranean breezes, the sun and desert of Northern Africa, the Persian and West Asian lands. To study Ancient Civilization is to travel - across parts of Africa, southern Europe, the Middle East, and Asia to India. It is a linking voyage, not a reducing trip. It CONNECTS peoples, ideas, patterns, developments, organizations, wars, religions, art, architecture, food and drink. It is a human endeavor about a human story.

Details of the bid to hold the Games In 1994, as a result of the decided venue for the 1997 World Games, Africa's Port Elizabeth City bowing out, the IWGA had to quickly find an alternative venue for the World Games. The possibility of hosting the Games was first sounded out by Councillor Morooka (now Board of Directors) through Professor Morohoshi of Minnesota State University's Akita Campus. As the World Games was an attractive prospect, combining high-level sports events with community participation, and as it could also become a commemorative event to mark the opening of the Akita Shinkansen line in 1997, Akita's economic leaders prepared a bid. However, at this time the preparation time needed was too short, and the candidacy bid was shelved.
At such short notice, the IWGA decided to make Finland's Lahti City the hosts for 1997 due to their rich experience in holding international sporting events.
