"Not since the Lord himself showed his stuff to Ezekiel in the valley of dry bones had anyone shown such grace and skill in the reconstruction of animals from disarticulated skeletons. Charles R. Knight, the most celebrated of artists in the reanimation of fossils, painted all the canonical figures of dinosaurs that fire our fear and imagination to this day."
Stephen Jay Gould, Wonderful Life
Welcome to the World of
Charles R. Knight

Charles R. Knight, who lived from 1874 to 1953, is famous for his ground-breaking depictions of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, and wildlife in general. Millions of people are exposed annually to this artist's works in major institutions around the world including the American Museum of Natural History, the Chicago Field Museum, and the Los Angeles Country Museum of Natural History. This web site is maintained in loving memory of this late 19th- and early 20th-century American natural history painter by his granddaughter Rhoda Knight Kalt, Dean Hannotte, and others. Welcome to the wonderful world of (mostly) British trade cards, usually comprising cards distributed with commercial products, notably tobacco, tea, and food products. You won't find much information about these sets in America, though the U.S. has its own tradition of trade cards from the 19th and first half of the 20th Century. (The "Mostly British" part means that I do not exclude sets from former Commonwealth nations that are produced in the same style as the cards from the U.K.) Major thanks for this collection goes to Kyle DeRoy, who provided the lists that got it all started, and who keeps contributing today. Below, sets are listed within groups by publication date. The "complete list of checklists" shows these cards in alphabetical order by set name. For a list of fascinating sites with information on trade cards, I recommend visiting the links from the home page for the Cartophilic Society of Great Britain (links are at Reference/Links); for lots of esoteric information and commentary, don't miss Franklyn Cards
The seventeen new sets for April 2003 include: Airliners of the 90s (1991), Between Two Fires (1931), Footballer of the Year (2000), Freshwater Fish (Ensign 1995), History of Britain's Railways (1987), Horse Breeds (1990), Music Hall Stage Characters (1902), New Zealanders at the Top of the World (1991), The 1990 Commonwealth Games (1990), 100 Years of Motoring (1955), Panasonic European Open (1989), Royalty Series (1903), Soccer Gallery (2000), Speed (different 1938), Winners of the Ryder Cup '95 (1996), The Wonderful World of Disney (1993), and World's Greatest Fun Parks (1990).

Although there is tremendous interest in them, there are no living specimens, so you can't see them in a zoo. Replicas provide a great way to learn quite a bit about them and other prehistoric animals. Although that knowledge may never be put into practice, it has the great benefit of introducing life in general, which can of enormous value, both personally and professionally. Carnegie Replicas
The Carnegie Collection is the most extensive and accurate set of prehistoric life replicas available anywhere. They are based on specimens at the world famous Carnegie Natural History Museum. They are carried by leading museum and zoos throughout the world because of their accuracy. Dinosaurs of China
Made by the same folks who make the Carnegie Collection, but unfortunately the Museum does not have any of these recently discovered dinsosaurs. These replicas are unique in that they come with a reproduction of the actual fossil.

    http://www.shsu.edu/~his_ncp/Prehist.html
GENERAL INTRODUCTION: PREHISTORIC TIMES [Excerpted from Philip Van Ness Myers, Ancient History, Revised Edition (Boston: Ginn and Company, 1904), pp. 1-12] The Antiquity of Man. We do not know when man first appeared upon the earth. We only know that in ages long past, when both the climate and the outline of the continents were very different from what they are at present, primitive man roamed over them with animals now extinct; and that, about 5000 B.C., when the historic curtain first rises, in some favored regions, as in the valleys of the Nile and the Euphrates, there were nations and civilizations already venerable with age, and possessing arts, governments, and institutions that bear evidence of slow growth through very long periods of time. [The Book of Genesis, which the Christian Church holds to be a divinely inspired record, fixes no definite date for the beginning of human life on the earth.] The Prehistoric and the Historic Age. The uncounted millenniums which lie back of the time when man began to keep written records of what he thought and did and of what befell him, are called the Prehistoric Age. The comparatively few centuries of human life which are made known to us through written records comprise the Historic Age. In the valleys of the Nile and the Euphrates there have been discovered written records which were made at least four or five thousand years before Christ; so we say that the historic period began in those lands six or seven thousand years ago. On the island of Crete numerous inscriptions have recently been found that apparently were written as early as the fourth millennium B.C. These, however, have not yet been deciphered. Some written records used by Chinese historians seem to go back to the third millennium before our era. In other regions the historic period still begins for us at a much later date. Thus the truly historic age did not open in Greece and Italy until about 800 or 700 B.C., and for the countries of Northern Europe, speaking broadly, not until about the beginning of our era.

    OBJECTIVES:
After completing this lesson, students should be able to:
  • Understand that fossil remains indicate that many species have become extinct and new species have come into being. Living things change with time. Classify similar-type fossils. Recognize that each kind of living organism, with its special needs, has adaptations to live in a habitat and share its environment with other living organisms to form communities. Develop a vocabulary specific to animals found in the La Brea Tar Pits.
  • MATERIALS:
    • Sandboxes Fossils (if samples cannot be borrowed from local natural history museum, students and/or teacher can "make" them from clay and bake in ki1n.) Sentence strip paper for making timelines. Beasts of the Tar Pits by W. W. Robinson and Irene B. Robinson Tell of Long Ago by Aliki Large chart paper Mural Paper Markers
    RESOURCES:
    A. The following books, in addition to the two mentioned above, are excellent resources and may be borrowed from a public library for use by you and your students for both background and enrichment.
