Frequently Asked Questions
What is a school psychologist? I think my child has a learning problem. How do I get this evaluated? What is a case study evaluation? What is a school psychologist? School psychologists are educational specialists who use their knowledge of psychology and educational research to help children, teachers and parents. We are skilled practitioners in the areas of psycho-educational assessment, childhood development, behavioral management, individual/group counseling, and consultation. School psychologists need to have a broad base of information. If we do not know the answer, which frequently we might not, we know where to go to find it. School psychologists must keep up-dated about
issues affecting the lives of students in our school. School psychologists are able to address many issues such as:
Crisis Intervention
Social Skills Training
Behavioral Management Techniques
Self-Esteem
Attention Deficit Disorders
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders
State and Federal Special Education Regulations
One of the main roles of the school psychologist is to administer a variety of psycho-educational instruments to students who are experiencing difficulties (academic or behavioral) in the classroom. Based on these test results and information obtained from the student's teachers and parents, the school psychologist helps the educational team determine if a student is eligible for special education services. School psychologists work with students who have diverse educational problems and needs:

Carolyn Chambers Clark, ARNP, EdD
  • Discuss the etiology of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Identify five symptoms of PTSD. List the three stages in the process of healing from a trauma.
John, a soldier involved in the Persian Gulf War, has nightmares about the firefight that cost him his leg. Susan, a battered wife, has had difficulty falling asleep and frequent suicidal ideas, and has lost all interest in work and other parts of her life for the past three months. Ira, a victim of the Oklahoma City bombing, swears at the nurses caring for him, has difficulty trusting authority figures and public institutions, and sees no future for himself. Janet, a rape victim, resists recounting the details of her attack and reports numbing of emotions and persistent symptoms of sleeplessness and irritability for more than a month. Even people who have had a miscarriage or experienced job loss may suffer from PTSD. At first glance, combat veterans, hurricane survivors, and nurses seem a very divergent group. What makes them similar? They all have at least one common experience: They have all been rendered helpless in a situation of great danger. While each survivor is unique in history and coping strategies, they share a similar and fairly predictable set of psychological and physiological reactions that identifies PTSD.

Recovery: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder By: David Kinchin Page 2 "PTSD RECOVERY" The snakes and ladders board can act as a helpful reminder to the survivor of their journey towards recovery. If he fails to reach a target, that failure does not drag him all the way back to square one. Even in failing, he has learned something about how best to set the next target. Full recovery It is not necessary to reach square 100 on the snakes and ladders board to have recovered from PTSD. Indeed, I suggest that in some cases reaching square 100 is not possible. Witnessing or being involved in a seriously traumatic event affects the rest of a survivor's life. This may require a person rethinking life-goals or life-values. Perhaps it would be useful to consider full recovery as anything beyond square 91 on the game board. This, if we return to the example of a broken leg cited earlier, there is always the thought in the back of a person's mind that the leg could break again. Likewise with PTSD, some of the symptoms could be awakened if triggers occur. Therefore, reaching the top nine squares on the snakes and ladders board, whilst being aware of the remaining two snakes, may be perceived as recovery. Errors of information processing in PTSD cases Although there are now a significant number of books and papers on the subject of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and suggestions for diagnostic and treatment techniques, very few give any practical comments about recovery. Where PTSD is discussed, evidence is generally anecdotal and has been gleaned from the hundreds of PTSD survivors who have volunteered information as a way of supporting others and affirming their own identifiable milestones in recovery.
