History: The part of Iberia which is now Portugal was occupied by a people known as the Lusitanos who are thought to be direct ancestors of the Portuguese people. The region was invaded and occupied by the Romans and later the Moors; it remained under the latter's control until the 11th century, when Ferdinand, ruler of the Kingdom of Leon and Castilla (in what is now Spain) conquered much of the territory. Over the next 200 years, the remaining Moors were driven out and the boundaries of Portugal fixed; and it was during this period (in 1143) that Portugal first became recognised as an independent entity under the rule of King Afonso Henriques.
The Castilians were themselves expelled in 1385 after defeat at the hands of João of Aviz (who became King João I) at the Battle of Aljubarotta. From this point, the Portuguese went on to build a colonial empire in Africa, Latin America, India and the Far East. One of the most famous figures during this period was Prince Henry the Navigator, amongst whose acquisitions were the Azores and Madeira. One of the best-known visitors to Madeira was Christopher Columbus, who married a daughter of one of the island's governors and lived for some time on Porto Santo. The island survived a brief invasion by a French pirate in 1566, but in 1580, along with the rest of Portugal, came under Spanish domination.

Spain and Portugal After centuries of Muslim domination, which left a rich mix of culture, the peninsular was under Christian rule by 1500. Portugal Established as a kingdom by Alphonso I in 1139, and recognised by the Pope in 1179, Portugal remained independent until 1580, when an invasion by Phillip II of Spain brought sixty years of foreign domination. The Spanish were overthrown by a revolution in 1640, and Portugal continued as a kingdom until 1910, when the monarchy was expelled, and the First Republic established. Short lived, and often violent, governments ensued, before a military coup in 1926. Portugal is now a democratic republic in the EU. Basic Timeline
This short timeline of Portuguese history covers both national, and colonial, events from 1143 until the present day. The information is basic, but includes military, political and some social references.

Portugal's Monarchy and its Maritime History
The region that would become Portugal was settled by the Celts around 700 B.C.E. It soon attracted a succession of peoples and was colonised in turn by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans and Visigoths. The Moors crossed the Strait of Gibraltar in the eighth century and commenced a long occupation over much of the Iberian Peninsula. They introduced their culture, architecture, and agricultural techniques to the region until Christian resistance grew into the Reconquista that finally ejected the Moors in the twelfth century. Portugal was born from this struggle to reconquer Iberia from the Moors. Young aristocrats from all over Europe went to Iberia to battle the Moors and while reconquering the peninsula for the Christian kings, they won hereditary titles and land grants for themselves. It was Henry, a son of the Duke of Burgundy, who fought as a vassal for the king for Navarre and was rewarded with a principality and the title of Count of Portucale in the eleventh century. It was his son, Afonso Henriques (1128-1185), seeking independence from the Crown of Navarre, who petitioned and won from the pope the title of King of Portugal. There are strong traces of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic culture to be seen across the land, most notably the collective tombs cut out of the rock at Palmela, Cascais and Alapraia near Estoril. Subjected to regular invasions, Portugal has been home to a succession of inhabitants over the centuries, shaping the face of the country we know today. The Moorish occupation lasted from the 8th to the mid-12th century, their greatest contribution being the introduction of the azulejo, a glazed-tile used for interior and exterior decoration. One can trace its modern history to 1140 AD when, following a 9-year rebellion against the King of Leon-Castile, Afonso Henriques became the country's first king. Afonso I and his successors then expanded their territory southward, capturing Lisbon from the Moors in 1147. The approximate present-day boundaries were secured in 1249 by Afonso III.

The history of Portugal
Then came the period of the Discoveries and the days of great wealth for Portugal, through trading with their colonies in Brazil, Africa, India, China and Japan and in the East Indies. Later, religious pressure from Spain caused the setting up of an 'Inquisition' in Portugal. This resulted in the expulsion of the Jewish and Moorish traders leaving Portugal with an empire based on trade but with no commercial expertise. In 1755, The Great Earthquake struck, destroying most of Lisbon and many towns and villages from the Algarve Lisbon in its present day grid structure. In 1807, Napoleon marched into Lisbon and the royal family fled to Brazil. Under the treaty of Windsor of 1386, the fighting was carried on by British Generals, including Beresford and Wellington, who finally threw him out 3 years later. In return Britain received the right to trade with Brazil direct and not through Portuguese merchants. Following the exile of the King there were constant struggles between those favouring a monarchy and those wanting a republic. Finally on October 5, 1910 the monarchy was overthrown and a republic declared. In World War I Portugal fought on the side of the allies with the loss of many men which was disastrous economically.

Portugal's history goes back to around 700BC, when the Iberian Peninsula was occupied by the Celts, followed by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans. From the 8th century the Moors arrived and throughout their long occupation introduced their architecture, culture and agricultural techniques. But in 1250 they were finally ejected. The period that followed created great wealth for Portugal due to their fearless mariners exploiting new trade routes with their dominance of the oceans, Prince Henry the Navigator being the instigator. Then, towards the end of the 16th century, Spain claimed the throne and although this occupation was short the bubble had burst and the wealth was frittered away.
In 1910 the monarchy was abolished and a democratic republic founded. In 1926 after a military coup, Portugal was under the dictatorship of Antonio O. Salazar. This was a time of political turmoil and oppression, in 1968 Salazar suffered a massive stroke and was replaced. But the national crisis was not resolved and in 1974 after a near bloodless coup, the democratic republic was formed. Although the Portuguese people now enjoy the freedom of speech they haven't lost their cautiousness. You might notice that they tend to be fatalistic in their attitude, this can often be heard in their tradition of telling stories through music called Fado. Their songs tell of life's struggles, and are often the life story of the singer themselves. Often accompanied by haunting music that can be moving for the listener.
