Existing since the 12th century as an independent state, the territory that today forms Portugal already possessed in the 10th and 11th centuries, in the area between the Douro and Minho, the sketch of a political organization, economically and socially different from the kingdom of Leon, of which it became autonomous in the course of the reconquest fights against the Moors. The contact with the Atlantic Ocean gave to the Portuguese the knowledge and experience that characterizes maritime peoples, allowing them to preceed the European marine expansion by some decades. The presence of strong Jewish and Arab communities also guaranteed the necessary scientific teachings towards new discoveries that would begin in the 15th century under the direction of the royal house. In 1415, the Portuguese took to the sea in an epic trip that would transform them into the first men to discover the marine routes for India, Brazil, China and Japan. The first known result of this time of the Discoveries was the occupation of Porto Santo, Madeira and S. Miguel (Azores), respectively in 1419, 1420 and 1431. The limit of the known Sea, until then, was Cabo Bojador's passage where began the 'Dark Sea' and it was thought at that time, that the human life past that point was impossible. After 15 unsuccessful attempts, Gil Eanes, squire of the Infante D. Henrique, got to transpose this obstacle and to navigate further south. Starting from then, all the remaining years of Portugal expeditions constituted of Caravels (embarkations of three masts and triangular sails). In their countless trips, many were the changes effected, that drove to an enrichment of the country, in a lot of areas, which are still applied today.
