Details of Study Areas: Geography and Demography Chapter summarised by Rimma Ignatyeva Introduction The ELSPAC study is being conducted in several European countries with quite different political, geographical and demographic histories. At the beginning of the project almost all participating countries (except Greece) had mainly state-owned public health services (including the maternity and child health care sectors). Although the study areas in each country were defined with the intention of having a representative geographic population of that particular country, there were some specific features of each of the study sites where the ELSPAC data were being collected. The studies described here were performed in the British Isles (Avon and the Isle of Man), in Greece (part of the city of Athens) and in three of the new independent states of the former socialist bloc in central and eastern Europe (the Czech Republic, Russian Federation and Ukraine). Since the late 1980s or early 1990s, these latter three countries together with the whole eastern region of Europe have been undergoing profound political, social and economic changes. The major political reforms stress democratisation and decentralisation, privatisation and market economy. Rapid economic and political transition have also brought major changes to the health care systems in the region. Russia The population is approximately 148 million. The average population density is 8.7 per square kilometre and fluctuates from 328 people in Moscow to 0.2 in Chukchi okrug.
