Band Profile Listen to Eddie Blazonczyk's Polka Radio Show! Click for Stations! In 1963 Eddie Blazonczyk's Versatones recorded their first album titled "Polka Parade" on the Bel-Aire record label. Over the past forty years and approximately 160 dates per year, this Grammy award-winning group is known for its modern blend of polka originals, covers and standards that have pleased people in over 6000 appearances, touring the USA, Canada, France, Austria, Mexico, and Poland. They have recorded over 55 albums and received over 125 miscellaneous awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), the International Polka Association, the United States Polka Association, the United Polka Boosters and the United Polka Association. Eddie Blazonczyk Sr. was born in Chicago in 1967, the son of immigrants from the rural Tatra Mountain region of southern Poland. His mother directed and sang in a Gorale (Mountaineer), music and dance ensemble in which he participated as a child. His father performed in a Gorale band on the cello. As a young boy, Eddie was exposed to some of the most influential polka musicians of the day such as Lil' Wally, Steve Adamczyk, Eddie Zima, Marion Lush and America's Polka King Frank Yankovic. The Versatones career highlights include Eddie Blazonczyk Sr's National Heritage Fellowship induction, the country's most prestigious honor in the folk and traditional arts, presented by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton in 1998, Eddie Blazonczyk Sr's election into the I.P.A. Polka Music Hall of Fame in 1970 and in 1986 the Versatones received a Grammy for their "Another Polka Celebration" album. They have also been nominated for a Grammy 14 times by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Science since the polka bracket first spun off from the folk category in 1985. In 1967, a Congressional Committee awarded the title "The Nations #1 Polka Band" to Eddie Blazonczyk's Versatones and registered this title with the Library of Congress.

What do you get when you cross the host of a popular television show, a disc jockey, a business man, and a musician? It all adds up to Jolly Joe Timmer, the Polka King. Jolly Joe began listening to polka music during his childhood days, growing up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Soon after graduating from Bethlehem Catholic High School in 1948, he built his love of music into fantastic enterprises. As a resident of the Bethlehem area, Jolly Joe has created a food specialty line that he serves at his picnic grove at Point Phillips in Bath, PA. Since 1970, polka legends such as Walt Groller and The Kryger Brothers have played, while Jolly Joe served Polish pickles, Hot Cauliflower, Banana Peppers, and other Polish foods. He also owns and operates a local music store called "Joe Timmer's House of Music" which sells all of the polka records from polka artists across the nation. Just above the ceiling at this music store is a recording company called Rave Records Co., also owned and operated by Jolly Joe. Timmer's numerous activities to promote polka music, have not been unnoticed. In 1991, Joe was recognized by Who's Who in Leading American Executives for his accomplishments and contributions to his musical organizations. Joe also received the Polka News Network's lifetime polka music award in May of 1995. This award was presented to him by Walt Groller, another polka enthusiast and lifetime award winner. Both men will receive a place in the Polka Hall of Fame.

POLKA HAPPINESS by Charles Keil, Angeliki Vellos Keil, Dick Blau The Authors Charles Keil is one the leading ethnomusicologists in the world. He is the author of four ground-breaking books, including Urban Blues, Tiv Song, My Music, and Music Grooves. Charlie is also the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship. Keil is Professor Emeritus of American Studies at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Angeliki Vellos Keil is the editor of the Autobiography of Marcos Vamvakaris. (Vamvakaris is the most famous of Greek bouzouki players, virtually defining the "Never on Sunday" style of music for both Greece and everyone else as well!) Dick Blau's photographs, films, and videotapes have been widely exhibited, published and collected both in the United States and in Europe. His work is in the Museum of Modern Art, the Chicago Art Institute, the Brooklyn Museum,the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, etc. Dick is Professor of Film at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Team Blau and the Keils are longtime collaborators. In addition to co-authoring Polka Happiness , they have recently finished another manuscript, The Instruments: Romani Musicians in Greek Macedonia , which will be published by Wesleyan University Press in 2001.
